I keep hearing about how Dez Bryant and Golden Tate are too old at 30 even though they can still produce. I don't care. We need weapons for Darnold's development. Sunday was a perfect example of how to destroy the development of your young QB. He had no one open to throw to. He's forcing throws because he has to and I don't want to see that become habitual. Ideally you want a young talented WR for a building team, but where are we gonna get that right now? We're not. We shouldn't give up our 1st round pick and we don't have anyone expendable or talented enough to trade for a stud WR. There are guys who can help us that are either Free Agents or tradable with mid-round draft picks. The bottom line is we need WRs right now. This can't wait until the offseason. Darnold's development matters every game.
Fortunately he's got a great head on his shoulders, but the danger is real. We can suck it up, sign a castoff/bad apple, or trade draft capital. Very unhappy situation.
It's a bad situation that Mac and perhaps Bowles and the trainer are responsible for, but I'm against panicking and trading away draft capital. I don't think Sam will get into bad habits in 2-3 games. I think this will force the Jets to use Herndon more and for Sam to develop chemistry with Herndon, which should be a good thing. Enunwa should be back in a couple of weeks. They have their BYE week coming up. Sam already has chemistry with Burnett and he had something like 8-9 catches on Sunday, didn't he? It gets him more playing time and should help speed his development or help the Jets see whether or not he is a keeper. This season is already lost, and it makes zero sense to me to trade away draft capital to try to put lipstick on a pig.
The injuries are obviously not ideal but the coaching is the issue not the lack of playmakers. It wouldn’t of mattered who we had out there with Darnold on Sunday with that game plan, he had no chance.
I'm not sure trading picks right now is the right call, but I absolutely agree that Sam needs better support. The draft needs to be offense heavy. As important as a pass rusher is, I think they can spend big money on one (looking at you Clowney). First round pick needs to be OL though. I know the Jets line might be slighty better than we originally thought it would be, but the Jets should always be trying to improve it. I would honestly be happy with R1 being OL and both R3 being WRs. Add another OL and a RB in the later rounds and I'll be very happy.
The only way that I'd be happy with that is if the Jets were able to sign A.J. Cann to start at one of their OG positions, an edge rusher, a decent rotational back with some speed, and drafted their future LT with their first round pick. They definitely need to upgrade the WR position, but 3rd round WRs aren't really what we need. We need a 1st round WR or two, or at least a 1st round and a 2nd round WR. That will have to wait until 2020.
I'd rather see him have less pressure on him to have to make plays most weeks. Chandler Jones could help alleviate that burden. So could Kelechi Osemele knowing Carpenter won't likely be back, but a little late in the game to make all that work out. Outside of that we're stuck waiting on the playmakers we have to get healthy.
Yep, I agree, Darnold needs some support. I'm hoping the Jets are able to work some kind of deal before the deadline today. He needs a pass catching RB to help take the pressure off.
I agree with almost everything you said, but I don't see the season as lost. Theoretically they could beat Miami and Buffalo and go into their bye at .500. They face backup QBs 2 weeks in a row, most likely. I know those are typical games the Jets blow and I don't want to dump draft capital either, but Powell is a huge loss and it's impossible to replace him without a trade of some sort, just to take pressure off Sam until the WRs get healthy or Mcguire returns and is capable.
I can't believe the chicken littles panicking in this thread. SMH. Some of you guys need to learn to start thinking with your big head and looking at the big picture, long term, and stop thinking with your little head and seeking immediate gratification or panicking like little girls. Take a deep breath and relax. Sam will be fine. I was worried for him and about him earlier, but am no longer. He is a rock.
It's not lost in the sense that Sam is playing and developing/learning. But starting Sam pretty much guaranteed that W&Ls didn't matter, and this was never a playoff team anyway. What's a .500 record get them? Nothing. They aren't a playoff caliber team. All getting to .500 would accomplish would insuring that Mac and Bowles would be back and probably ruining any chances the Jets had for getting their future LT or edge rusher in the draft. They have Cannon and the kid they picked up from the Broncos for a reason and Burnett had 8-9 receptions this past Sunday. It will only be for a couple of games, then there's a bye, and by then Enunwa should be back, Anderson should be healthy, Sam and Herndon should be more on the same page, and who knows, maybe Leggett will actually contribute something.
It's not about the W-L, you're right. It's about developing your QB. What good are you doing if you don't put any talent on the field for your QB to work with? I mean how many times did Romo say that there's just no one on the Jets that's able to get open? You aren't even giving Sam an opportunity to make a play. Cannon is a rookie, I have no idea who the kid from the Broncos is because I don't think we have anyone on offense that played for the Broncos, and Burnett has 5 receptions the entire year so I have no idea what you're talking about there either. Edit: Henderson. Can't believe I forgot about him...
Fair points, they just need to survive a couple weeks. I think getting to .500 (or finishing the season near it) would be a huge accomplishment considering how the schedule has been and the amount of rookies being relied on to carry the offense right now. Over-reactive panic moves can be bad, but bringing somebody in could help Sam's development, so it's a double edge sword.
Sam will learn regardless. What does he learn or how does he develop when Bowles goes into his shell and plays so conservatively? What does he learn or how does he develop when Enunwa, Anderson and other receivers were dropping passes or Bates making stupid play calls? How was he developing having to try to play 3 games in the first 10 days of the season? So let's say Mac made one of those trades and that WR (DT or GT) or whomever the RB is that some would have wanted help Sam develop this season. Then that player gets injured and never contributes anything this season, or following the season either retires, or sees his play fall off a cliff next season, the Jets were unable to fix the OL because Mac drafts an edge rusher with his 1st round pick and there are no good OL that can help the team in the 3rd or 5th round next year, and then Sam sustains a serious injury. How will that help him develop? I'm all about helping Sam develop, and imo the best way to do that is to protect him and give him time in the pocket. That means fixing the OL. In all likelihood, they may be able to do nothing in FA to upgrade their OL. Someone posted that Ali Marpet has already been re-signed by his team and A.J. Cann could be re-signed before the FA period hits. There are no LTs any better than Beacham, and there may be no RTs better than Shell. I'd rather Mac use his 1st round pick on their future LT, and if necessary trade one of our 3rd round picks and the 4th round pick to move up and draft a very good OG prospect, then take a RB with the other 3rd round pick. That, would help Sam more than trading for a 30 or 31-year old WR.
Panic moves almost never work out. By its very definition, panic means an emotional, knee-jerk reaction or move, not one that is rationally and carefully thought out. Getting to .500 means nothing. It's nothing to be proud of and would actually set the team back, because it would mean that Bowles and Mac are definitely retained, and it would probably ruin any chances for drafting their future LT or a topnotch edge rusher in next year's draft. We'd be left with drafting another DL, or a CB or maybe a WR, and the OL would still suck and the D would still have little or no consistent pass rush.
You just outlined a highly unlikely and worst case scenario to make your point. What if Macc trades a 3rd for Tate and he ends up being the speedster underneath guy that takes a 7 yard slant to the house once every other week and also turns on the burners every now and then to catch a deep ball, then he resigns for three years and stays consistently solid the entire time? See how that works?
If they really want to help Darnold they’ll develop a game plan for the modern day NFL. The game plan against the Bears was disgusting and should’ve got the entire coaching staff fired at half time.
Yes and no. The gameplan wasn't good, but what do you even do with garbage you have to work with? Kearse was dropping passes, Burnett couldn't get open and was forced to make a ridiculous grab, Matthews couldn't play a full game, Peake is shit. I mean besides Herndon, who can get open?
