This is going to read a lot like everything I need to know I learned in Kindergarten, but I was watching the game with my 6 year old who is in K and it was the first game where he watched the whole thing and was into it the whole game. these are just his observations but they all see to point to bad coaching, anyone else have anything to add the the list? 1. "Is that guy that wiped hit butt with football still on the team?!?!?" - Even he recognized that this team has no discipline. 2. "Why aren't they trying to play faster, they could still score more points" - At 6, he doesn't quite get clock management, but its even apparent to him that TB sucks at it and shows no urgency 3. "Why don't they throw the ball" - conservative play when you are down is not a good way to win... I think he also saw this as the boring game it was. He may also be condemning defense first strategy. 4. "Why don't we have a Gronk" - he sorta understands mismatches from watching the patriots beat us and is obsessed with the Gronk. We never have any mismatches and never try to exploit them 5. "Who is the best player on the Jets" - He recognizes a lack of player development. The team has no stars. Related to the last item but he did say both during the game and they seemed to be separate observations. 6. "Why do they keep whistling before they start the play, don't they practice that?" This pretty much started my idea for the list. At 6 he just couldn't understand pre-snap penalties. He plays on a soccer team and knows you practice the start of a play. To him a presnap penaty is like lining up wrong at kickoff. I'm with him, how can a team have SO many pre-snap penaties. What we would consider a well coached team has almost none or very infrequent. 7. "Every time it says 3rd they have to go so far to get to the yellow line" Not sure of this is a coaching thing but we never seem to be in a position to try and get manageable 3rd downs. I guess its a bad game-plan, but mostly we just suck. 8. Finally the most telling exchange to me: Boy: "Who is that guy they keep showing with the hat" (Todd B. on the screen) Me: "That's their coach" Boy: [in disbelief] "Why is he just standing there, he's not even yelling!"
I must say, that was pretty hilarious. My 16 year old said to me when we drafted Darnold, "Damn, he seems to be good....but don't worry, the Jets will crush his career". Hope that doesn't come true.....
The Jets lack talent but in a pich Better him than you judging from the comments. They lack talent and are in year two of addressing the situation. They need WR's, help on the O-line, a pass rush and depth everywhere. By the time your son is eight or nine they will be ready to challenge for a title. Worrying about the coach is silly.
My puppy understands mismatches and barks whenever she sees bigger athletic tight ends covered by slower linebackers and spins around in circles after seeing easy completions again and again on short crossing routes over the middle. True story.
