But we can indict Mac's talent evaluation using another criteria. How many of his picks, after they were released by the Jets, went to another team and showed the ability Mac supposedly drafted them for with a seemingly more competent coaching staff? The answer, sadly, is almost none.
On one hand I do think that Mac should at least get to choose his HC and that coach should report to him. The argument could also be made with the way Mac drafts, he would ultimately choose the wrong person unless they fell into his lap. I wouldn't be upset in the least if they both were told to GTFO at season's end. I don't believe either one would ever be hired again in their current roles in the NFL...
Good point, but is it not possible that other teams have stayed away from even giving some of them chances because they thought as bad as the Jets are and those players couldn't even make an impact there, do they want to waste their time? Every one of the guys that Mac drafted that failed, may have been a bad pick and failed because of their poor work ethic, lack of talent, or not able to grasp the more complex system and systems the Jets employ. Has another team given Stewart a shot? I know that some players have peaked by college and aren't good enough for the NFL, but it's still a little shocking that a guy would be a good contributor at Alabama and not even able to make the Jets roster.
Fair points all. I'll only add that the examples of player's drafted with high picks that did get opportunities with other teams thus far do not work in Mac's favor. Hack is the most glaring; but also look at a player like Chad Hansen who has already been released by the Pats and the Titans. No one even bothered to sign Ardarius Stewart after we released him.We can also throw in Devin Smith and Lorenzo Maudlin. Even if these players were somewhat tainted by their Jets association, if they were NFL caliber players they would have caught on and proven their value in a better system. As it stands, after three draft classes, Mac's draft track record looks pretty bad, and his free agent signings IMHO are only slightly better.
This is what I thinking too. Give another coach a chance with these draft picks? Why? Mac should stick to FA's, overhaul the college scouting and let someone else draft.
Mac has lost credibility with me ...NC makes some fair points about him but he isn't what I envision for a GM. His track record is approaching Average..but that's it He was and still is a Rookie GM ..I mean look..a guy like John Dorsey would run circles around him
I’m still a believer in Mac not being incompetent, not sure if he’s good or not as the CS does him no favors with their 1980s gameplanning. I wouldn’t have a problem giving him an opportunity to hire his own coach.
How many more years can you risk giving to Mac? Can you trust him to make the right decisions with the available cap space? Sure, we can rationalize giving him more time with the picking his own head coach excuse but is it worth the risk to give him more time? I don’t see how it possibly could be. At some point, when the team continues to finish identically to the preceding years, you have to simply judge him by the empirical data and fight the instinct to rationalize the failure.
If they are going to tear it down, get rid of the GM too. Reggie McKenzie? Let him hire his own coach also? Not sure about the coaching prospects this year, they don't look great. Sucks we didn't get on the Nagy boat.
Here's an interesting take on who the next coach might be... http://turnonthejets.com/2018/10/toj-pick-six-replacements-for-new-york-jets-head-coach-todd-bowles/
Macc is a complete failure when it comes to drafting in the second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds. Didn't they cut Jeff Burris?
he also made a hell of an offer to try and get mack as well as was after bell and fowler. mac is the opposite of afraid of making a big move. he's an aggressive GM which is why i like him
Mac needs to go, it's plain and simple. Look no further than this last game as prime evidence of his failures as a GM. As much as I like the guy's confident demeanor, that's where it ends. For a guy that believes in "building through the draft", he has utterly failed in every aspect of that philosophy. If he were asked to rate his own performance with a critical eye, it would be hard to confidently say he's done an average job. His best draft picks have been Adams, Williams and hopefully Darnold. All of which were pretty safe picks, I'll give him some credit for moving up to get Darnold, but the rest were widely recognized as the safest picks in their respective drafts. Hardcore misses like Hackenberg are obvious, but the whiffs on Smith, Stewart and Hansen are really hurting the depth of the WR corps (and that trickles to Darnold). Mauldin, Petty, Burris, and Donohue were also bad picks that left lingering effects on the roster. Instead of filling in the roster with safe late picks, he's drafted WAY too many long shots; in hopes of them fulfilling their potentials in green and white. Aside from Anderson (UDFA), Shell (5th), and Edwards (who he probably could have gotten as a UDFA) his "scouting prowess" has delivered us nothing but glaring holes in the Offense/Defense/Special Teams. I'd include Maye & McGuire when they get healthy, but that's still not close to good enough. In my opinion, he's ready to go with Bowles. Looking at probably another top 15 draft pick, and $90+ million in cap has me very nervous. Chris Johnson has to hire a legit GM, give him the power to hire his own coach, and add some structure to that front office. No more of this equal playing field nonsense.
Not sure how you can justify keeping Mac and firing Bowles. They're a package deal. Neither has separated themselves from the other. Even if Mac has done a better job, has he earned 3 more years with his own coach? I mean, did anyone see the team that took the field yesterday? Was that a poorly coached team? Absolutely. But that roster had so much less talent than the Bears yesterday, it was tough to watch. Clean house, bring in a head of football operations. Let him hire a GM. GM and President work to hire a coach. Profit.
Macc has been sub-Idzik in his drafting, hitting on safe picks and failing appallingly on later round picks. I will always give him a pass on Hack as the QB position is always worth a swing-and-a-miss but missing on shit DT/CB/WR picks is reprehensible. Having said that, the older I get the more I am coming round to the opinion that talent evaluation is total fucking nonsense. There is no class-leader in drafting and even the dominant evil empire of the Patriots have had results as patchy as ours. We should save a ton of money and get a thirteen year old kid with access to Bleacher Report as the Head of Football Ops.
i really like sam but we couldve already had watson or mahomes and 2 more R2 picks to boot. there is zero talent drafted at other key impact positions: LT, Edge, WR, CB, RB. this is after four drafts. it is a patchwork roster plus a few clever trades.
