I’d rather have an offense first team every day and twice on Sunday. The Broncos, with no Defense but the great Elway had a punchers chance for 15 years. The Dolphins with Marino, had awful defense but a punchers chance for 15 years. The current Pats, usually have mid to low level Defenses, but they have Brady. You can scheme through holes on Defense if you Score a ton. From now on Load up on offense while building, then add defense pieces when you’re close. Ask Brett Favre and Reggie White. Sick of Defense first. This organization is backwards.
People used to say that a great defense would always beat a great offense. It was true. Not anymore. The game has changed. The league doesn't want defense anymore. With the rule changes, the way these games are called now it's close to impossible to field a 'shut down defense' in the moden NFL. There ar no more great defensive teams. What passes for a 'great defense' nowadays is if a defense puts together a two or three games solid stretch of games. And stop wasting big bucks on CBs in free agency when was the last time a free agent CB mput a team over the hump? Asomugha sucked with Philly, Revis sucked with Tampa Bay and Johnson hasn't made a diffetence here.
I’m amazed that anyone holding a high level NFL position could’ve thought that the game plan they had for that game yesterday was a winning game plan. We were down 7-3 at half and it might as well have been 40-3. Completely unacceptable and anyone and everyone that had a hand in coming up with that game plan should be fired yesterday.
It shouldnt have been a surprise.Weve seen gameplans like this under similar predicaments on the road dating back to Herm. When the going gets tough these defensive head coaches get extremely conservative. Its time for a coach who isnt afraid to outscore people or challenge the offense to overcome
It's a QB driven league. 3 Teams are currently starting rookie QB's. the Jets rank 19th in points and 29th in yards. Cleveland ranks 24th in both and Arizona ranks 31 and 32. Arizona has Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson we have nothing remotely close to a WR as good as Arizona's 2 Kirk who was drafted this year. Cleveland has elite talent at WR and TE. We drafted a QB in the first round this year. I'm not sure what the complaint is? We have a rookie QB and bad tools on O. The AFC has 6 teams that are above 500. We have cash and a draft to fix it. Go figure we lost to teams with better personal and beat 2 teams with top end QB's and one team with a mediocre QB who took his team to the NFC finals last year. There's nothing here that should be unexpected. We lost to a good Chicago team on the road with 53 offensive plays that produced 204 total yards. Who knew we had to get better personal on O along with developing a QB to actually be one of the 6 teams in our conference that has a winning record. If we were 3 and 5 tossing games 42 to 34 every week I suspect you might want a Defense. If KC D doesn't get a lot better they aren't going to sniff a SB and that's with elite talent all over the O.
That's a fair point. But in today's NFL, it's better to have a great offense and a bad defense than vice versa. IMO, bend but don't break is the best teams can do on D with the rules skewed towards offense.
Oh so the mindset is to pick the 7th or 8th best offensive player instead of the 1st or 2nd best defensive player...
When it happens for 10 years in a row,the defense still stinks & the offense is non functional in your scenario you trade down!
The Jets are going to an offensive minded coach. Mac was so excited to hear that Hue Jackson was let go he negotiating with him right now. Bowles will be gone. Here comes Hue.
I believe that's why in a what is thought of as a great QB draft we moved up to take Darnold. If you want to make the argument that last year we should have taken either Mahomes or Watson that's a really good argument.
First, it's not "All offense OR all defense", it takes both. But, if you have to err, err on the side of offense, not defense. The Jets have had a "Defense wins championships" mindset for decades and haven't even gotten to the championship game, let alone win one. And with the evolution of the NFL to an offensive league (because they finally figured out that games that end 42-34 are way more entertaining than those that end 17-14), it's even more critical that the Jets change their philosophy. How many Jets fans would love to swap situations with the Chiefs, even if they knew that their spotty defense might keep them from winning a SB? I sure would! Because while they MIGHT lose the big game due to a poor defense, it's eve more likely that they'll win by simply outscoring them given the way the NFL manipulates games and favors offense. Worst case would be the Chiefs get to the playoffs and have a shot at the SB every year that Mahomes is healthy. I'll sign up for that in a heartbeat.
No one has said "neglect the defense", but OTOH, isn't that exactly what they've done with the offense? If you're going to favor one unit over the other, in today's NFL you need to favor offense. Moreover, the Jets have a LOT of catching up to do on the "O" side.
No the Jets have failed to draft a QB since Namath. Todd, O'Brein, Sanchez and now Darnold. This has not been a defense wins Championships team ever except when Rex was here. Rex's team were built around a 1st round CB LT and Center drafted by the previous regime and FA's on the OL, running back and linebacker. In spite of Rex being a Defense wins Championships HC our first draft pick under him was a QB. This team has never had a defensive or offensive mindset with the exception of Rex. What we haven't done is draft elite NFL QB's and build around them with the exception of Namath. That was a very balanced team in my opinion. This team is clearly rebuilding around Sam.
I agree but the way the OP worded the post it's basically saying allocate all of the cap room to offense. This is just not feasible.
Also, you have to ask yourself these questions: Would you take a player like Odell Beckham? Because basically you are saying you want offense under any and all circumstances. There isn't a whole lot of offense skill players going to be available in 2019 free agency, so the only way the Jets will get a player like this is if a team is selling him, which in most circumstances is due to negative reasons or to draft the player.
