Weather not cooperating at all for Saturday. Not fishing in rain and/or TStorms. Still have to make a Jersey Run though.
Made it out yesterday. Double limits on Sea Bass (5) and about 20 Porgy. Only took about 1/2 hr to get my Sea Bass limit. I guess they were really hungry. Went with some buddies of mine I used to work with at Bass Pro Shops. For some strange reason my buddy always brings his Shaky Tiger Lite and uses mono on a spinner for shallow to medium drop situations. Because of the depth we fish, his rig always works best in shallow water but when we go deep, the tiger lite has almost no backbone and adding in the stretch from the mono, he has to swing for the fences to get a decent hook set. I think he must have dropped a dozen Porgy's at the surface because he couldn't get that hook set deep enough. I've been trying for years to get him to switch over to a conventional reel with braid and use a fluorocarbon leader. it's painful watching the guy set the hook, rears back and his rod bends like he has a grouper on the business end only to bring up a 1/2 lb porgy. Not to mention his gear ratio on the real is so small he's cranking for days to get the fish up to the surface. Every time I give him my rigs to use (fluorcarbon leader and circle hooks), he does so much better. Any ideas how to drag my buddy into 2018?
Its painful to watch Stinky. He works twice as hard for half as many fish. Out of say, 8 fish he manages to get to the surface, perhaps 5 makes it over the rail. Next trip I'll bring along a spare conventional rig and try to get him to use it for a drop or two.
Anytime.. Nice to see another Jersey fisherman around! I'm usually out of Pt. Pleasant, Belmar and Brielle. Can't wait for Oct, Nov and Dec. Shaping up to be a great fall season.
Went out yesterday. Hard NNW winds kept the water choppy but I did manage to put 17 large Porgy in the cooler. So many keeper Sea Bass came up that we had to throw back made me want to cry... 2 weeks and it's on!!
CMAN , I Think you will get lots of extra fishing in now that you will be out there on Sundays instead of watching the Jets ,,,,,now if only I could decide between Apple Picking or hiking ?
I fish out of Shark River, Manasquan, and North Sound Grand Cayman. Between weather and work fishing has been tough to do this Summer. Got offshore about 4 times, inshore 4 times. Got any intel to share on Tuna I'm all ears...
Got a few offshore trips planned for this upcoming fall season myself. Tilefish, Sea Bass, Giant Porgys, Cod....
I've heard they're catching Albies on the Big Jamaica and the Golden Eagle is killing the Blues out of Belmar. This is gonna be one super Fall fishing season!!
You Florida guys are spoiled rotten!! That trip with the Giant Porgies and Sea Bass is an offshore trip is headed off Block Island. Almost as deep as Stellwegen Bank, MA.
change in plans.. Wifey is flying in on Sunday AM so I'll be headed back out on the water on Saturday weather permitting..
Actually, last time I went fishing my friend caught a 20" pink porgy.... that's snapper size. Biggest one I've seen (14" is legal)
Headed out Saturday for Blackfish and Porgy. Fluke season is over and the Fall Season has begun! YAY!!!!! My time of year!!
