While it's true that re-treads have sucked elsewhere, there's no guarantee that first-time HCs won't suck here. Edison failed over 10,000 times before he successfully created the lightbulb. Maybe the guy we hire failed elsewhere because he never had a quality QB, and many people say that a great QB can make a HC look like a genius.

IMO we can't just keep doing the same thing that the Jets have been doing forever...hiring a first time HC and then expect him to succeed. We've been there, done that, and the learning curve is too steep for many. In addition, with Darnold having a year's experience, and our other young starters hopefully having developed, coupled with a ton of cap space, we should be ready to be a playoff contender in 2020, if not 2019. We can't expect a rookie HC to come in and take us to the playoffs.

IMO if Bowles and the team don't show steady progress/improvement, and he is fired, then IMO we either have to hire an NFL re-tread or hire someone who has been a very successful collegiate HC at a big time program (and maybe has some NFL experience as a position coach or coordinator) and would be new to the NFL as a HC.

You spelled it out perfectly. I'm sure many of the Bowles haters would stick with him more if he were creative and accountable. But he keeps Rodgers around when he is probably the worst assistant coach in football. Bellichek resigning at his press conference triggered something NFL wide. We will never get top flight head coaches to come here. They settled for Bowles. No way could he had been their top choice (or Cassell/Wolf) top choice. He was the only one that would take the job. I hope that 2 year extension was not as binding as people think. If the Jets play the same mundane football then a change has to be made.

I am on my way out the door to put in a 10 hour day..

The work ethic of the Johnson's is laughable!..... tell me what owner from 31 other teams tells the GM and CS "THERE IS NO MANDATE FOR PLAYOFFS"??

The expectations are>>>Management just has to do enough to help me turn a profit...and thats where it ends ...feh to that

It just occurred to that the Season HAS NOT EVEN STARTED and theres a post on replacing Bowles?? AHAHA Too funny

NOT exactly what I would call a Vote of Confidence

All these guys have something called a "work ethic" that they have always had...play hard achieve OR GET CUT

If you read any of my posts concerning Darnold for example Ive stated time and again Sam will succeed DESPITE a a crap bunch of coaches and management

He will help us extend plays maybe win games without a great game plan or calls from Bates or TB

Do YOU go to work son?? Maybe you would get my drift

Have to love this. Darnold success will be in spite of the coach but if he somehow flops it will be the coaches fault
    Amiright?
Gtfoh, this is some pathetic shit right here. I am embarrassed by thought of some being lumped in with posters like this by an outsider reading this thread

There aren’t a lot of retreads having success in this league though. And there definitely aren’t any on the offensive side, not that I think that matters but it seems to be a quality on everyone’s wish list. I look at the list of possible coaches with head coach experience and pretty much just yawn.
Who do you like as a retread candidate?

if darnold looks good. Jeremy Bates will be the next coach. BANK IT. If not the jets, another team will want to hire him. Teams want coaches that proved young QB success. We just saw teams raid the eagles coaching staff from QB coach to OC from the work on Wentz.

First off, there is no need for personal attacks. It's uncalled for, especially in a forum about an NFL team that we are all rooting for. Expressing opinions is one thing, attacking me personally is not going to get you further in life.

Second, your argument is the classic argument made in this situation. "It's not the coach that is developing these guys, they always had the talent and the "work ethic"".

So when guys develop and become good to very good players, they always had the talent and work ethic, but when guys do not develop or do not pan out, Todd Bowles does not know how to develop young talent?

If this were true, who needs a head coach? Let's just fire Todd Bowles and not have a head coach. All the guys that we take need to have a great work ethic and good talent and they will pan out without any coaching. And just as you stated, Sam Darnold will make great plays despite dumb play calling. Why do we need any of these guys?! Maybe the answer is just going coach-less!

I have a feeling, with his thin skin and swarmy attitude that he would be a terrible choice in this market. He has problems dealing with people who kiss his ass and never butt heads with him how would he fair in a market that actually questions you with facts and doesn't allow you to dance around answers.

As good as he is when he has talent he's a bad choice for NYC IMP

Please explain to us what Chris Johnson has to do with QB or player development? And how Bates who was involved in the development of a few QBs is crap? How about explains to us who you can cite as not having developed because of Bowles? Because we can all name quite a few players who have developed on this team. You just can't spew total nonsense based on absolutely nothing and think you're making a case.

Sorry if you feel I attacked you..

After 5 decades of being a fan I know the players need structure support and a game plan ..so of course they ALL need coaching

My problem is with the Coaches in place now NOT that we dont need Head Coaches ..you claimed that Bowles has developed players Can you give me some examples of that.??.if you look at LWillams for one he regressed from ROTY after following the schemes put in place by Bowles and Kacy. Look at Mo Wilk: Bowles helped him get lazy imo

FTMR lets take a look at our Defense as whole( his supposed specialty) as an example of his coaching ability ..almost dead last in the league this despite tons of good draft picks !

This is why I believe that as far as the Jets are concerned there is little or no evidence that Bowles is doing a good job, getting the most out of players..So I would tend to think the players have MORE of themselves to thank for getting better

Defensive rankings were 4,11,25 2015-2017. So only kinda close to dead last once, the same year everyone knew the roster was bad.
    But fuck facts, right?

Points per game in 2016 the team was ranked 28th even though 11th in yards allowed. What's the disconnect with that? Too many turnovers / short fields? Bad red zone defense?

Leo Williams without the threat of a edge rusher is doubled all day long. He hasnt regressed. He was a pro bowl alternate. People who understand what is going on get why he doesnt have gaudy sack numbers. They also know there is a lot more to the game than sacks.

Jenkins has developed. Adams and Maye are developing nicely. McClendon is better than I thought he was before. Kearse is a lot better than in Seattle, without Wilson as his QB.
Enunwa. R Anderson was a UDFA and is a legitimate threat.

Now the ultimate nonsense, please explain dont post BS and run from the question as usual, how did Bowles help Mo get lazy. This has to be key. How? What did he do? Lets recap, in year one under Bowles Mo has his best and most productive season. Career year for him up to then. Helps get Mo a fat contract and then Mo dogs it moving forward. So is your story Bowles helped him get the deal then helped him sabotage the team and Bowles record? You realize how goofy this is? What HC, never mind a hard ass, would help a player dog it.

You finally have a great looking rookie QB. We got the guy we actually thought was the best QB in the draft. We didn't pass on Marino for Ken O'Brien. Mac may actually be smart or he could have just been lucky. Bowles is smart and even tempered. He may actually improve. He was a real good DC in Arizona. Great at making adjustments with a pretty crappy D as far as personal was concerned.

The argument I would make for not dumping him is the likelihood of management to get someone worse is much higher than the likelihood of them getting someone better. You also would be putting Darnold in a position where he is likely operating under a completely different O with new terminology with a new HC. Not good for him which is not good for the NY Jets.

Bowles may actually grow into the job. The Jets last year had less talent than Cleveland. They played smart, disciplined football despite the fact that they were physically overmatched all over the field.

Bowles isn't Herm Edwards or Ryan or Kotite or Coslet or Walton. He is a smart guy. He has great personal discipline and temperament. He's built for the long haul.

I love Scott Frost but even he is going to have to develop as an NFL Head Coach. There is no way in hell we are going to get the next Bill Walsh, Bill Parcels or fill in the blank HOF head coach. The ownership of this team couldn't identify it if it was standing in front of them. Todd Bowles ain't the problem. He may well be part of the solution.

Again, I understand the frustration of this franchise and looking for a scape goat to put the blame on, but this argument is just ridiculous. Just as you want me to prove to you how Bowles has helped grow these guys, please provide proof on how Bowles made MO lazy. I would love to hear your proof.

The problem with your argument is that you refuse to accept facts and only want to explain away everything saying that these guys always had the talent. Of course they always had talent, they were drafted into the NFL, but to sit here and say that the coaching staff has done nothing to help them blossom further into their careers and improve their talents is just ridiculous. My proof doesn't matter because everytime I bring up guys that prove my points, you shoot them down as just a product of talent, and talent only.

You say coaching of course matters, but your argument doesn't follow that logic. Sam Darnold would still be great without coaches. Robby Anderson would still be great without coaches. Wilkerson was great but turned lazy because of coaches. So what exactly did this coaching staff do, in your eyes? Just hurt guys like Wilkerson? Fuck all the talent and the improvements. Bowles only hurt Wilkerson and made him lazy.

You can hate Bowles and wish he was better. But please stop trying to argue that he has not made improvements and helped guys get better. That's a dumb argument.

It really doesn't matter. None of this matters. Ignore all of the good and ignore all of the facts because Bowles only produces bad outcomes and has a negative effect on everyone.

And anything that was good, it was going to be good anyways. Bowles had nothing to do with that

When we took on Vietnam, we were stacked at every position. It was an epic mismatch. Võ Nguyên Giáp isn't available to coach the Jets. Todd Bowles is.

    Fuck all that.

Jets must snag James Campen from the Packers. Make him the OC, if that's what it takes. If he has no fucking idea how to create a passing offense, GET A PASSING GAME COORDINATOR AND RUNNING GAME COORDINATOR. But it all starts with snagging Campen.
