true and i'd like to see him be a QBs coach but he has plenty of time to do that but only a very limited time left to be on an actual NFL roster. from what i gather the jets FO and staff love mccown. He's done and said everything right and i'm sure made their life easier helping get darnold ready. Never complains, does what he's asked, and goes above and beyond. He's a smart veteran with a good presence and a leader. I'd gladly have the jets pay him 5 mil or so next year to backup darnold

I couldn't find that in those articles. Most of it refers to salary as a whole and not it's effect on the cap. Not trying to be lasy but do you mind pointing it out that all salares are included in the cap (article, section, subsection)

In Article 13 Section 5 (starting the bottom of page 92 in the link I gave) they say "all of the following amounts shall be included every day in determining a Team's Total Salary." Then, on the top of page 93, the first thing they say is "(a) Player Contracts. Subject to the rules below in Section 6 of this Article, all amounts the Team has paid or is obligated to pay as set forth in all Player Contracts of current and former players covering a particular League Year, including exercised options, shall be included in Team Salary." That is, other than exceptions, all salaries count all the time. Part (b) says tenders count, and part (c) says practice squad counts, and so on (also page 93). Then, in Section 6, they say that between the start of the league year and the first day of the regular season you don't count all of the money for people not in the top 51 salaries, but only amounts above certain thresholds (that's on page 94). Thus, as of Thursday, everything will count, including practice squad. The page numbers are slightly different in your link, but the text is exactly the same (look at pages 90 to 92).

I get it's all included in salary but a lot of that is revenue related and other legal stuff (the wording on these sucks and is filled with mumbo jumbo to prevent teams form cheating the spirit of the rules) It would make sense if all active players count but i've never heard of practice squad counting on the cap. I'll look over it again and see if i can make heads and tails of it. thanks for the info!

If you factor in Davis Webb to the Jets Bridgewater trade (Teddy's replacement), the trade looks like this now:

    Jets Get:
    -3rd Round Pick
-2017 3rd Round Pick Davis Webb

    Jets Give Up:
-Teddy Bridewater (who would be gone in 2019 anyway)
    -6th Round Pick

    Great move, Mac!

That is only during the off season, during the regular season all players count

The other teams would have to go off of what they saw of him in the preseason which wasn't too impressive. What team is going to pick him off the practice squad to put on their active roster taking up a spot.

Jets overpaid a little to keep him from looking around to see what others would offer. $600K keeps McCown working with Darnold while Webb handles the scout team QB duty.

Article 13 Sections 5 and 6 of the CBA states that all salaries count towards the salary cap, including practice squad salaries,

except that "between the start of the League Year and the first day of the regular playing season, only the following amounts from Paragraph 5 shall be included for players whose Player Contracts are not among the Team’s 51 highest valued Player Contracts, tenders and Offer Sheets

Separated above into the relevant parts.
All salaries count, except between 1st day of league year and start of reg. season

This makes McCown's transition to QB Coach smoother and quicker. If Webb works out, this should be the end of the road for McCown in uniform after the season. Hopefully McCown can become the Qb Whisperer and Bates can concentrate on being the OC full time.

Exactly, McCown as the scout team QB I think would be a waste. Maybe Webb excels at being a scout team QB, which I have read in some QB instances is what kept them in the league, even if he doesn't progress further than that.

They've been our favourite QBs on the Jets for years.

I'm glad you and @statjeff22 explained it to me. My original post was wrong but i'm happy to be corrected and have learned something for my projection in the offseason :)

Not a bad signing if for no other reason than trolling the Giants. Now we have the QB you should have taken and your backup! I thought he actually looked better last preseason.

This is a good signing. First rate guy, smart, works his ass off + will get along with Sam. Take a look at last year preseason vs Patriots and you see a lot of good throws + why Giant fans were excited / thinking he could be their next qb.

Why does everyone assume McCown is gonna magically turn into some ace QB coach? I’m aware of just one QB he’s had unlimited influence over. And that guy fucking sucks.
