It's an extra arm for practice. no complaints on that. Mccown is old and darnold may need some "rest" days during the season.
If Webb saves us from having to spend a mid rounder on a long term back up in 2019 hes well worth the investment. Before his arrival that seemed inevitable. If Webb works out thats one more pick that can be used on OL/Edge/Offensive skill
For sure. This is more a set up for next season, but more importantly this is an epic troll-job against the Giants lmao. Also, a recent Albert Breer articles, Jets didn't even call the Giants in regards to moving up because they didn't trust the Giants front office.
There is always a cheap vet backup available. hell mccown might stick around another year if we throw him like 5 mil. He knows he won't have to start and likely won't have to play and can keep on the mentor role and play a little in practice. we might go 2 QBs again next year. Webb is good to keep on the PS just in case
I believe he will be the new QB coach next season and probably why we gave him 10m this time around, he played well but not 10m well, there must be a reason why we gave him such a large amount. Plus I feel he really got the Jets and besides all of that he seems a really nice guy lol
Not really understanding the "shocking" narrative behind the Giants releasing him. Is it simply bc he was the next best option on their current roster behind Eli? It's not as if this regime drafted him.
10 mil was because when we signed him 1) options were thin, cousins was gone, we hadn't signed teddy yet, and the draft didn't happen yet. He was signed on to be the starter and 10 mil for a starting QB albeit a low tier one is a good deal. 2) we wanted a veteran presence at the position with experience 3) last year he only got 6 mil and wasn't supposed to start but wound up starting and was very good. he was very underpaid last year. the 10 mil now was kind of like a reward it's possible be retires but if he does we still need to sign a vet backup. I think he'll play out another year as he'll earn way more being a back-up QB then he would as a coach
He may well earn more as a backup QB but he may well also harbor ambitions to be a coach, he looks the kind. I can see the 10m being a reward for last seasons performance tbh
I would be completely content with neglecting the DL for the next 5 years in the first two days of the draft.
"Well, now that Teddy's gone we're gonna need another guy for practices..." "Yeah, there's that guy out in such-and-such." "He's okay but he'll have a hard time learning Detroit's plays in just a few days." "How about the guy over in...?" "Nah, he's too...you know...dumb too" "Yeah, I think I have an idea...we've been paying for air fares up the wazoo and running the damn interns all over the place picking people up - why don't we give ourselves a break here? And Mary, back in the housing office has done a helluva job all summer - she deserves a break, too. What about Webb? He already lives around here somewhere and he's no worse than those other guys we'd have to bust our balls over - frankly it's not worth it." "Great idea, call him up and tell him to stop by this afternoon for a physical - he's our guy!"
that's stupid. If you are going to spend that much then just keep him on the active roster so you don't lose him. Instead they are overpaying for a practice squad guy that anyone else can scoop up at any moment
That is not true. During the offseason only the top 51 player salaries count against the cap, but during the season all salaries do. Edit: More precisely, Article 13 Sections 5 and 6 of the CBA states that all salaries count towards the salary cap, including practice squad salaries, except that "between the start of the League Year and the first day of the regular playing season, only the following amounts from Paragraph 5 shall be included for players whose Player Contracts are not among the Team’s 51 highest valued Player Contracts, tenders and Offer Sheets" (it then lists limited amounts that do count, but again, only between the start of the league year and the first day of the regular season). https://nflpaweb.blob.core.windows.net/media/Default/PDFs/Active Players/2011 CBA Updated with Side Letters thru 1-5-15.pdf
Don't think it's stupid at all. They don't want to carry 3 QBs on the active roster. They never expected him to be available and by all accounts a lot of Giants players didn't either. If someone signs him, there are contingency plans.
When Manning goes down, & their 2 backups cap out, can't wait to see Giants fans faces when they give us #2 for Webb
