Sounds like someone is jealous that @TonyFtLaud knows a lot more about Florida football than someone professing to eat sleep live it.
I think those rankings don’t take into consideration 2 factors that some of us are hoping makes a real difference this year. Wesley Johnson was just awful last year and that impacted the guards which impacted the tackles. And Winters had a debilitating injury all last year that he played through but it severely limited him, further impacting line play. With massively improved center play this year and a healthy Winters, this line could be functionally adequate.
Functionally adequate. Nice description. That's it in a nutshell. No evidence that it will manage to reach that 'high' water mark and there's a fair chance it will equal last year's shitstorm.
Yea, but just think about it... How many of our starting five Offensive Lineman have ever gotten any NFL Quarterback's "killed" thus far, to begin with? . You've gotta look at the entire picture. We have hope and/or promise at all 3 of our starting O-Line position(s) (OT/C/G) and nowhere near as bad nor catastrophic as some may make out to be. And below I'll explain how and/or why: @ LT we've got Kelvin Beachum who's returning as a 2nd year Jet (started all 16 games last year) and one who once protected Ben Roethlisberger's blind side as a top 3 rated pass protecting LT and a very good one at that (when proven healthy). Some fans seem to not realize just how good this guy truly is and what type of an upgrade he was over Ryan Clady last year. This is an LT who declined the Pittsburgh Steelers contract extension following his 2014 campaign. @ LG we've got a 29 year old James Carpenter (out of Alabama as a former 1st round draft pick) and an LG who's got 87 career starts under his belt (started all 16 games during our 2015 run and has started every game @ LG ever since). Some Jet fans seem to have also forgotten that before becoming a Jet (2015) that James Carpenter not only once started 10 games for the 13-3 and Super Bowl winning Seattle Seahawks - but also started 12 games the following season for the 12-4 and SB losing Seattle Seahawks team(s). @ Center we not only replaced Wesley Johnson who was rated dead last (32nd) amongst all NFL starting Center's last year - but has since been replaced with one of 2018's top rated Free Agent Center(s) in Spencer Long. Some skeptics seem to not talk about this upgrade @ Center enough. He's a former 3rd round pick (2014) out of Nebraska, has now played in 40 games (with 30 starts) and is on the verge of replacing the NFL's worst rated starting Center in Wesley Johnson. @ RG we've got a former 3rd round pick and 6th year pro in a 27 years of age Brian Winters - who now has 64 games played of experience knk54 career starts) under his belt (started 10 games during our 2015 season). Some Jet fans are acting as if our O-Line has been built up from nothing but late 7th round picks and undrafted FA's; which couldn't be further from the truth. and... @ RT we've got a 3rd year kid who started 12 games (as only a second year player) last season in Brandon Shell. Who's the great nephew of an NCAA/Pro Football Hall of Famer Offensive Tackle in Art Shell who's absolutely massive in size (with great length and long arms) @ 6'5 325 lbs and the definition of a real South Carolina country Hog (Damien Woody was @ 6'3 327 lbs). "I'm truly looking forward to both Kelvin Beachum as a veteran leader and Brandon Shell as a younger prospect as ou OT duo/tandem, relieved to see Spencer Long on the verge of replacing a 32nd rated Wesley Johnson and am more than comfortable at Guard(s) with both Carpenter and Winters as former 1st & 3rd round picks as our 1-2 punch along with 141 career NFL starts combined". 2018's O-Line if and when healthy has true promise and a real shot at surprising many around the league. O-Lineman ala Brandon Moore and Damien Woody etc have always been underrated to begin with but this 2018 Jets offensive line is currently being severely underrated and to the point of being made out to be catastrophic too.
couple comments from me..... No our OL is not a disaster - "if" healthy for most games. if there is a serious injury along the way then its a major, major setback for the unit. the real disaster is that the current OL is 3/5th free agency, 1/5th 3rd round, and 1/5th 5th round. yes this OL approach can fly when u have QB's like geno, fitzpatrick, mccown, etc etc. But NOT with a franchise guy like darnold. The jets have to step it up in the draft for blue chip lineman. they absolutely have to. take the cowboys approach. we have seen teams rebuild half of their OL in one draft. i expect the jets to do just that in 2019.
Patriot fans are the same way, they think Brady all by himself is all that matters. When Brady fumbled the ball in the 4th quarter against the Eagles costing the Pats the Super Bowl, it was due to a O Lineman missing a block. Many of the Patriots losses in the past have been due to their O Line being beat, is this just coincidence? They say defense wins championships in football. But in my opinion defense and an offensive line wins championships. It appears the Jets may have a franchise QB who will be in grave danger due to management's oversight on the importance of an O Line. Lets hope they fix this problem soon.
Wesley Johnson was awful but I think he also gets way to much of the blame at times. I am guessing that Mack is waiting till 2019 to make any serious changes to the O Line due to the cap numbers. So if Winters and some other over paid O Lineman don't perform this year, it will make better sense to release them next year due to the cap savings. So in this sense I understand why even with all that cap money, the Jets are trying to be smart with their money. I would have liked them to have drafted another guard to help bolster the offensive line even more, especially in the middle. So perhaps next year the Jets will make more moves to bolster the O Line and give Darnold some decent protection.
We both agree the Jets will possibly improve their O Line in 2019. As I said in another post, it will make more cap sense to release some of their O Line players then.
Please, speak on behalf of your own O-Line... LT: Trent Brown (7th round). LG: Joe Thuney (3rd round). C: David Andrews (Undrafted, 2015). RG: Shaq Mason (4th round). RT: Marcus Cannon (5th round). Other than using a 2018 1st round draft pick on Isaiah Wynn (who suffered an ACL injury and is now out for the entire season)... Your N.E Franchise has done next to next to nothing in terms of addressing your offensive line while using draft assets while oversighting the importance of an O-Line (for an aging 41 year old Tom Brady). And your WR's suck bad. Like never before too. Chris Hogan: 439 yards last year. Phillip Dorsett: 194 yards last year. C. Patterson: 309 yards last year. Amara Darboh: 71 yards last year. Matthew Slater: 0 yards last year. Chad Hansen: 94 yards last year. That is catastrophic type disaster. Only one player who's ever put up 500+ yards in Chris Hogan (career high 680). In comparison to our N.Y Jets who now have and feature 4 separate young WR's in Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse, Quincy Enunwa and Terrell Pryor who (all) have at least 810+ yard seasons under their belt. I couldn't care less how great Brady has been in the past he won't be able to turn wine into grapes this year, not behind a suspect O-Line (5th highest sack percebtape of Brady's career last year) and a complete and utter shit fest @ WR he won't. You just better pray Julian Edelman is a reincarnation of Randy Moss come week 5 and beyond.... Let's hope they fix these these problems soon.
I say that defense, an offensive line, and a star QB win championships. It doesn't make any difference how good the OL is and/or the D, if your starting QB sucks.
I guess we must assume that there are no OL on the waiver list that are better than our current back up bench. Seems a bit hard to believe to me
I would love to discuss this topic with you, but I have been reprimanded in the past by the board's admins when I discuss the Patriots on a subject forum concerning the Jets. So if you move this post into the NFL forum I would be glad to let you know what I agree and disagree with your post on the Pats. But in the meantime remember that this discussion was on the Jets offensive line. Whether the Patriots offensive line sucks or not doesn't matter in this discussion, can we agree on this? Also do you agree that Mack will probably be making changes to the O Line in 2019 due to the salary cap implications? Also keep in mind that since I live in New England I may not be aware of important information from the NY media on this subject. So there is a good chance you may be more informed on some recent development that I am unaware of. So I hope you can be patient with me if this is the case. There is a good chance that at least one or more of the Jets starting O Line will get hurt during the season. So what about the backups or depth in these positions? Last but not least with the hiring of Rick Dennison I could see a revamp of the O Line based on the new run zone blocking schemes that were incorporated in Denver. So I suspect this hiring and Bates being the new OC, the Jets offense is going to be nothing like last year. This change alone is probably going to create a whole new learning curve for the O Line, so you might have to wait till the end of the year to see the fruits of these changes. There is no sure thing in life, but I suspect the Jets O Line will be totally different in 2019, just my humble opinion.
Hey Water boy. He clearly stated.... And the Ravens had one of if not the greatest defenses of All-Time. So, what was your actual point, outside of trying to "correct someone"? Can you, yourself name a championship caliber team that's won without either an O-Line and/or a Defense? No, you can not. So now, you're the one who stands corrected.
Tell Trent I said hi and that he still is only a lousy game manager. Remind him that he played in a different era, and while it's still possible for a team to win with a QB like him, it's not very bloody likely and the odds are against it. I'll take my chances on a team with a star QB any day over a team with a game manager at QB. BTW congratulations on regurgitating and keeping alive one of the stupidest comments ever made on the internet (________ says hi).
