Whats really scary is that these are all Bowles handpicked guys..hes been given everything he could possibly need in assets at every level of his defense.Theres been absolutely no evolution at all.The defense looks at rigid, awkward & lethargic as it did when he first arrived w someone else’s players. Im sure at some point Kacy Rogers will be the fall guy which could be why theyre giving his son a freebie shot w the team. At this point i have zero confidence in this defense transforming into the kind of unit theyre supposed to be.Fast,athletic,swarming. The scheme & philosophy is too geared toward stopping the run & blitzing w play design that simply isnt anything special. Just hold out hope for a light to go off i guess
Bowles was supposed to bring a different version of the 3-4. I was hopeful of the one gap scheme I’ve seen at times that would allow the talent on our line to really shine. Instead when in the base it’s the same old two gap scheme complete with a lack of edge talent to go with it. Little has changed since the Rex years except we use more nickel and have less talent in the front three. Living north of Pittsburgh I’ve been envious of their 3-4 for a long time. For once I want use to put a premium on the most important defensive position, edge rusher. Sure their corners often suck, but they make up for it in quick pressure. We on the other hand have good corners but leave them out to dry with no pressure and QBs that have all day to make the right read or wait for coverage to break down. It’s frustrating
Joey Bosa is a 4-3 DE, a drastically different position from from a 3-4 DE. A 3-4 DE's primary responsibility is not to get sacks. They are there to stuff the run and eat up linemen so faster, more agile LBs can get thru to the QB. A 3-4 lineman's job is not to put up super sexy stats. The fact that Leonard Williams stats ARE so good despite constantly fighting double teams proves how insanely good he is. A 4-3 DE plays a similar role to that of a 3-4 OLB. They are smaller, more agile, and have a much bigger focus on getting around the tackle to get to the QB. There is a bigger focus on the LBs to pick up the slack on run stopping duties.
That's a BS answer. He played well no matter who sets their unrealistic bar. If someone didn't appreciate that it's on them. Not Lee. To not know what you're looking at and just throw out complaints isnt setting the bar. He was coming on the second part of last season, has played well this summer and played well vs the Giants. So let's talk about setting a mythical bar and imagined bad play
Yea. Some of these guys have really just hated the pick from day one and therefore will never give Darron Lee his deserved credit regardless of how well he performs (agenda driven). While these same fans have been harping all over Lee's first round draft status they've completely failed to realize and understand that Darron Lee (last year) amongst all 2nd year defensive players drafted from 2016's draft class (DE's, DT's, NT's, MLB's, IMLB's, OLB's, Safety's and CB's) ranked 7th in combined total tackles with 94.0 and his 3.0 sacks also ranked 3rd amongst all second year Linebackers (MLB's/IMLB's/OLB's) drafted from 2016's draft class. They seem unable to comprehend those facts (mentioned above) and/or can not grasp just how impressive 94.0 tackles, 3.0 sacks, 3 passes defended and 2 fumbles forced were from that of only a 2nd year player. It's ashame.
Bah if I recall many questioned his size. His crap tackling technique. Obviously he's not going anywhere so we'll get another year of his mediocrity. I think his tackle count is more indicative of a mediocre D than anything. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I didn't know that 94.0 tackles, 3.0 sacks, 3.0 passes defended and 2.0 forced fumbles were considered "mediocre" from that of only a 2nd year player... Nice to know. I guess if you're not a Hall of Fame player during only your 2nd season you're written off as "mediocre". And those who were (or are) questioning his size simply lack the knowledge to understand that Darron Lee's size is identical to some of the best NFL tackling machines within the game today...
Again, I think his tackle tally is more indicative of a shit D than his ability. Hey we all have our favorite players and we'll defend them to the death. I just don't get Lee and unless he explodes I probably never will. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Maybe you should include the 21 missed tackle stat in there too. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Good points. People better learn this, college football isnt going to churn out the same type of tacklers that we've seen in the past. The game on the college level has changed and with the illegal hits leading to ejections, etc so have the tackling skills. Theyre playing closer to touch tackle than tackle football and players are going to enter the NFL needing to hone their tackling skills. With Lee I dont get it. People complain he was a reach when he was predicted to be a pick in the teens and came to us at 20 overall. Also who did they want? Theres no one who was in that area of the draft who is guy you can say we screwed up by not taking. I just cant stand the blind, clueless comments about players just to be negative as if its funny and cute to just dump on your own players and team. Even when your eyes tell you something different, or should
Lol you keep rolling back to that argument. I don't care. The scouting report on him initially was shit angles and poor tackling technique. 21 missed tackle is a clear indication. I'm not saying he will never get better, but until he does I'm not impressed. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Actually I remember people saying there is a switch to smaller and faster type LBs and Bowles had used one successfully in AZ. None questioned if an inch or two meant he would be mediocre. Or 10 or so pounds would do it. Not getting your point, hes too little to play the position but the tackle count says his size doesnt prove that out so we give the credit to the D? What sense does this make? Hes either to small to tackle or what?
That you dont realize this is true, that you dont know this has been discussed often and with concern just means that you have no clue, not that its horseshit.
Darron Lee. Production wise. Ranks top 5-7 amongst all Linebackers drafted from his draft class. Not just amongst "1st rounders" either.
I think it fair that folks want to critique Lee and a lot of it is fair criticism. But to complain about where he was drafted is 20-20 hindsight of the highest order. There was nobody taken in the 10 picks after him that was worthy of the 20 pick. And looking back now and finding a third rounder who was better would be even worse hindsight.
The bolded is the reason our last 2 HC have been mediocre at best. Their philosophy is predicated on having strong CB play in order for the rest to work. Great job of highlighting that in your post!
Exactly. A lot of people, I guess due to the internet and the belief that from their parents basement they can make draft picks better than their teams GM. So they trash a Lee from day 1, they wouldn't have picked him and continue to dump on him. Is he going to be Ray Lewis, no. Is he a bust, no. But there's no inbetween to some. He went 20, there weren't obvious options that would have returned more but that doesnt stop the whining. Reality is he was picked to go top 20 and went 20.
