I'm not sure why him not being a starter is such a big deal. He's not a starter on the best defense in the league who has 2 pro-bowler caliber starting DEs. He would be starter on most teams certainly on this one.
Nonsense. If Fowler was that good, he'd have been starting for the Jags, and they would have found a way to keep him, including cutting other players if necessary. They obviously realize that he's a head case and could quite possibly wind up in prison.
Teddy might be worth more than a 2nd, true, but maybe not. Macc has to weigh his options. But he's not going to keep Bridgewater beyond this year unless Sam suffers a career-threatening injury, so the odds are Macc will look to get the biggest impact for him, and aside from a stud OL (which none will be available), stud pass rusher is that piece. Maybe he could get someone like Clowney, of he's even available, but he's coming off a serious injury so there's question marks there too. In short there are no "sure things", everything is a gamble. Taken altogether, Fowler is a decent bet. EDIT to remove question below - I misread your post and thought you meant he only played one game, not that he only started one. My mistake. BTW: If Fowler only played one game for the Jags, how did he rack up 8 sacks?
You seem to be unaware and oblivious that come next offseason (2019) that our N.Y Jets will be ranked 1st in available cap space and the Jaguars will be ranked 31st (out of 32 teams)... What part of serious cap hell do you not understand? https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/2019/ Yea. Right. Some GM that guy is.
Nonsense. The Jags' cap doesn't figure into this. That's your twisted read to try to justify your position. You need to stop and think before you post, and not just gush with emotion because Fowler's younger brother has a baby with your niece. If Fowler was that good, he'd have been starting for the Jags, not being just a situational pass rusher. If he was that good, they'd have found a way to keep him. Just like QBs, one can't have too many quality edge rushers. There comes a point where a player can become more trouble than he's worth (his on field contributions) and Fowler has obviously reached that point with the Jags. Trading Teddy plus a 4th round pick for a backup edge rusher in Fowler is bat shit crazy, but trading Teddy plus a 3rd or 2nd round pick is flat out insane. Quality starting QBs are worth a LOT more than edge rushers. As a Jets fan you should know that. You can't even get your facts straight. Fowler was drafted in 2015, so he's a 3rd year player, not a second, and I see that you were wrong about rankings on cap space. Why am I not surprised? Finally, the Jags play a 4-3 D alignment. Has Fowler ever even played standing up? Even if so, that was 4 years ago in college. If he can't even start in a 4-3 alignment, how in the heck is he going to start in a 3-4 where he has to set the edge as well?
It's a big deal because the Jags drafted him #3 overall in the draft. Those players usually are starters. If they were that happy with him, why did they draft Noah the next year? Calais Campbell is 31 and not the future. If Fowler can't beat him out, something's wrong. In addition, the Jags play a 4-3. Has Fowler ever played standing up? What makes you think he could suddenly become a starter here playing in a way in which he has never played? So you're advocating trading a quality starting QB for a player who has only started one game in his career, has off-field/character/temper issues, and who has never played OLB (unless it was in college)?
I didn't say that he only appeared in one game. He only started one game, and that was in 2016 when he had 4 sacks. He has appeared in all 32 games the last 2 seasons.
Such a great GM but yet could not afford his own 2nd round pick in WR Allen Robinson, drafted Myles Jack during the 2nd round (who's only put up a whopping 2.5 sacks throughout 32 games played), can no longer afford his own 1st round pick (3rd overall) in Fowler Jr. and also wasted a 1st round pick (3rd overall) on BLAKE BORTLES out of UCF; who's anything but a 1st round QB. And worst of all set to rank... 31st in cap space (2019). 32nd (dead last) in cap space (2020). 30th in cap space (2021). Yeah. Right. Such a great freaking GM this guy is. Jacksonville will lose alot more talent than they'll be able to retain over the next 3 offseasons. Allen Robinson was 1st. Fowler Jr. will be next. And a boat load more will follow. Fans will say anything to make Maccagnan look bad. Just wait two/three years from today: you'll see the Jets contending while being backed by available cap space; while Jacksonville is set in stone to struggle A.) Keeping their own homegrown players along with B.) An inability to sign potential free agent's. You'll see.
There is something fundamentally wrong (and not just money) when the third pick in the draft with that third pick in the draft being third pick Dante Antwane Fowler Junior, a 24 year old former third pick in the draft out of the University of Florida from the Southeastern Conference (widely known as the SEC, big fan here- you know he was first team all SEC in 2014 and second team all SEC in 2013) what with the kid being ONLY 24 and at 6-3 260 pounds with ELITE talent and a 4.61 in the 40 at the combine which helped him be the third pick in the draft and the team that drafted him third didn’t pick up his 5th year option and is willing to trade him away. It’s not just money.
Even better ...10 sacks and not a starter. Now it makes sense why the didn't pick up his 5th year. Not to mention they are in cap hell.
It's gotten to the point where all you can do is laugh. There are still a handful of Jet fans who are unaware, clueless and absolutely oblivious to Jacksonville's financial situation (although a little bit of research goes along ways). Here: Maybe I should point these fact(s) out (yet again). • 31st in cap space (2019). •32nd (dead last) in cap space (2020). • 30th in cap space (2021). Welcome to salary cap hell, Jacksonville. (but hey, don't let the know it all's and the naysayers tell you any different) There's a (real) reason why Jax could not afford their own 2nd round WR in Allen Robinson, but yet the Chicago Bears could, and even signed him to a three-year, $42 million contract (because Jacksonville, obviously couldn't). Welcome to salary cap hell, Jaguars. And there's also a reason why Jacksonville can not afford their own 1st round talent even after a breakout 10 sack season in Fowler Jr. (but the Jets can). Welcome to salary cap hell, Caldwell. Really not that hard to understand. • 31st in cap space (2019). •32nd (dead last) in cap space (2020). • 30th in cap space (2021). (For those who couldn't comprehend nor understand the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th time).
And yet he had 10 sacks last year.Hes a legit starting TALENT.And there are legit circumstances pertaining to injury that have contributed to him not starting. It has not been a performance issue
