Sam Darnold is the real deal and the Jets can’t control their giddiness. He arrived 3 days late and knew the playbook inside and out. He’s been audibling out of bad plays/making correct checks at the line of scrimmage. He’s also done a solid job of protecting the ball so far (his biggest ?). It’s been said that goes through progressions, if his first option isn’t open he goes to 2/3/4... have heard he’s much further along vs where other rookie qb’s usually are (in a different league vs where Sanchez was). He’s making wow throws the other 2 can’t. He has an ultra sense of calm that most NFL qbs lack. Teddy said he’s a guy you can’t break and he’s the real deal. Overall, the Jets aren’t viewing him as a rookie, because he’s not acting like one. I don’t think they had any intentions of starting their rookie qb this year (that’s why Bridgewater was signed) but I don’t think they ever thought they would get Sam Darnold and now that he’s here, I don’t think they thought he’d be showing this much so soon.
I think the above post by Soylent Green sums up exactly what the Jets brain trusts are thinking right now....Darnold will make the rookie mistakes of course but from what I've dissected from various reports and watching the training camp videos he seems to be on a higher scale than most rookie QBs. The next test will be Friday night although the Giants game would be even bigger if he plays in the first half......
I mean that is not on the Jets at all if Adam Schefter and Mehta post that stuff. People watched Sam play at USC. He was taken #3 overall. Of course he has a chance to start and people knowing Sam expect him to seize the moment. Jets fans are used to crap so they can't even fathom that Darnold could be great and ready to roll by Week 1. If he isn't, then let McCown/Teddy start, but I think there is a good chance he will be ready. One thing some posters have brought up this week, and I did not agree but now I think it makes sense, is protecting Sam. The Offensive Line is not great, the Jets play 3 games in 11 days to start the season, Week 4 is at Jacksonville, so you could let McCown or Bridgewater weather that storm, then put Sam in after he has had a month to watch. I think that is actually realistic.
So, you're saying he's not ready? Is there a team in the NFL that considers who plays based on the shift of a day or two in their schedule? If he's ready to be the starting quarterback he plays regardless of the permutations in the schedule. If he's not ready to do that he's not ready to be at the top of the depth chart.
If he wins the first game, he could ride the crest of the wave in the other two games, win both opening games and he will be flying high for game week 3 It could well be challenging For McCown due to his age and not enough time for recovery, hell I'm 46 and my body aches all day long and I am not being smashed around a football field anymore, I can imagine his joints in his throwing arm aching with three games in 11 days and practice on top.

Put that old man out there if we have to ... but what about Teddy? Took him a bunch of practices to throw an INT in a team drill apparently. I just think Darnold this preseason has to show his best Russell Wilson impression, he really has to SHOW he's ahead of Teddy and McCown. In the eye test itself.
Everything I’ve written has been reported somewhere, but yeah the proof will come in games. I’m optimistic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
True, I like Teddy but I fear his leg isn't really right and he is trying to pretend all is well, if we had the OL of the Cowboys two or three seasons back then I would be more confident for him but until we see evidence with our own eyes, we have to assume he still isn't 100% fit. The choices are McCown - a steady guy, a leader, a guy that can make most of the throws required but is prone to doing the wrong thing at the wrong time just when you don't want it. Teddy - a great man/character who can bring a safe arm, he can move the chains in an unspectacular fashion (there is a word I am looking for and can't think of it :/) maybe it is game management ? The downside for Teddy is his knee, he can twist it at any time, he can be hit hard by a tackle and that could well be game over for him. Darnald - undoubtedly the future we have been looking for, these guys come along rarely, extremely rarely at the Jets, we will have to see how he does in the preseason games and take it from there, it is okay in practice to throw an INT and then get the ball back and then throw a TD, you won't be doing that on gameday, well not until we get the ball back from the opposition anyway. Those are the risks, I think I am happy to take them and wouldn't be all hard on him if he throws a few INT's, but as you know I wouldn't be overly concerned if we had another top 5 pick next season to work with as we continue the rebuild I do feel we are moving forward at a good pace, QB, WR's, TE's, S, FS, CB, DE, all look good, with other positions showing promise or improvement from last years team, I would be surprised if we got a top 5 pick really.
I saw Teddy at the Green and White Scrimmage and he moved around just fine to me. He was able to move around and navigate in the pocket. We really won't know for sure until he plays in a preseason game. Teddy is a guy you can win games with, not flashy by any means but doesn't make the big mistakes like McCown does at the end of games. I mean, it sounds like I am babying Darnold to an extent, but I just dont see the rush right away especially those 3 games earlier on. I don't want to see McCown out there.
We get it. You’re afraid for Darnold because of the schedule. Your fear doesn’t matter at all. He’ll play if he wins the job. The end.
well not shit Sherlock. Know what else doesn't matter in this case? your opinion IF, IF, IF ... love me some IFs
Ohhh nooo I’m soooo afraid for Darnold! How can they ask him to do what they’re paying him to do! We need to protect him by keeping him off the field! Man up.
I really don't know what all of this Darnold talk is about. Any time a Franchise not only draft's but trades up into the top 5 for a QB (3rd overall)... That QB is then expected to start from day one. Or at least have a fighting chance to compete in order to do so. So. No. None of this is breaking news, shocking, alarming and/or not expected. It's the offseason. Writers need topics of discussion in order to sell a meal ticket. Not too much to write about.
