This is just how things go in the NFL. Darnold was almost certainly waiting for Mayfield to sign his deal. It's done and things didn't go Sam's way. That was only days ago, so that's how we got to where we are now. I'm sure the contract was done shortly after the draft. Most of the top pics have signed within the past 72 hours. I'm think a resolution will come sooner rather than later.
But here's the problem: what's to burn the midnight oil over? Either the Jets drop their demand for offset language, or Darnold/Sexton agrees to accept offset language. Each side has a take-it-of-leave-it position. There's really nothing to negotiate. One side has to change its position for anything to get resolved. There's no way for them to meet in the middle unless there's such a thing as a partial offset.
Why don’t they just split the baby. Judgment of Solomon. Go halvsies. 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Tomayto tomahto. Same difference.
Which is what I've been getting at - why wouldn't there be? The CBA regulates certain things in contracts but if it permits offset/no offset why would it preclude a middle ground? That way both side give concessions and nobody loses everything they're looking for.
Would make sense there is a partial offset. Who knows. Maybe that's what they're fleshing out. I can live if this goes on another day but he has to be in pads by Sunday. If he's not we're starting off next week in full loljets mode One side has to blink already. I don't care who
Shout out to @Laxg41 for making this thread. When he made it, I thought it was not necessary because Sam would sign any minute. Now here we are on Saturday. Page 14, 265 posts. Unfortunately: I was wrong.
I'm just amazed that having finally sorted out the ridiculous state of rookie contracts, they left in something that could be negotiated and could still cause snarl-ups. I hope they sort this out and either automatically include offsets, or rule them out completely. Leave it so there is absolutely nothing to negotiate over. Negotiation can come with the second contract when we HAVE SOME FUCKING IDEA OF WHETHER OR NOT THESE KIDS CAN PLAY.
I am sure the contract thing will be figured out soon but it sucks for me. I will be at the practice today and I was hoping to see Darnold throw. Oh well.
I woke up this morning feeling optimistic. We have to look at it this way: yes we have Sam Darnold holding out, but at least we don’t have Josh Allen showing up.
Yeap. Football is finally here and we gotta hear about off the field crap. I am 100% behind the jets in this. The agent is using darnold to show future clients that he will fight for them. They put the off set language in every rookie contract. Sam needs to make a decision and sign the damm contract. Hell I want teddy to be the starter so stay out a few weeks kid n u won’t dress all year.
It looks like it could be an extended holdout similar to Bosa. The Jets arent going to budge and set precedent for future picks, and if Darnold hasnt budged now, why would he in a few days? This isnt one party wanting $10 the other offering $3 and settling on $5. Its an agent wanting a team to do something against their policy. My guess is we dont see Sam until at least after thr G&W scrimmage.
This. And his agent has to know how terrible of a decision that is to be 21 and in New York with a chance to start but choosing to hold out instead. Apparently he doesn’t.
Not sure how the defense to we always get out picks in on time and Macc has never had a holdout is our history. Youre certain the issue is the jets acting poorly, not the agent being a dick?
There is absolutely no reason for the Jets to budge. 1) Baker Mayfield went ahead of Darnold and signed the contract they’re offering 2) They have 2 viable alternatives at QB that they’re happy with (for the 2018 season at least) Darnold’s camp is really just wasting valuable time for their client.

Want to throw up? Think about it this way. Obviously the Jets are trying to protect themselves in the event someone actually does give him good money but:
This is such an awful way to look at the situation. It’s not about the actual dollar amount. It’s about the precedent you set going forward. Do you really want to show future agents of future potential saying he’s that you can get the team to break a long-standing policy even though you hold all the cards? Makes no sense whatsoever.
