I figured as much when I was reading an article about how in love the Jets were with Teddy. Probably fluffing him for trade bait. I expect the second rounder (or at worst a third) back.
Absolutely. Let’s say we give Teddy the ball. If he performs amazing, a team is going to sign him. Darnold is getting the ball no matter what next year.
Problem is your not going to know what you have in Darnold till next year. It's a chance the jets have to take. Get what you can for Teddy.
I get it, he is leaving after this season. BUT, if Darnold plays last 8 games of season and performs poorly while Teddy played admirably during first 8, you don’t think the jets would at least consider tagging him or do something to keep the QB room competitive? Why wouldn’t they? I say play Teddy, see what he has, then play Darnold and see what he has. Go from there.
Franchise Tag Teddy if he plays well enough. Then you can have a backup plan in case Darnold does not develop year 2. We don’t have to agree on this. I think Jets would be foolish to just trade him away blindly without seeing Darnold in action. You disagree. All good.
I just read a fluff piece on him today, and thought exactly the same thing. They're shining him up Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I'd want a 2nd for Bridgewater. While I'm not super high on him he's still a relatively young QB who has played in the league, has been decent at times. Doesn't make mistakes. I just hope some teams develop QB crises in pre season with injuries or poor performances and that raised Bridgewaters trade value. Then use that 2nd to help in building Sam an oline next season
because teddy isn't out future you can't throw big money at a QB you aren't keeping around because you have a 3rd overall pick QB. you want to pay teddy almost 30 mil for 1 season so darnold can not play? makes no sense. having a good QB on a rookie deal saves an ass ton of cap room and there is ntohing like game experience to help you learn. teddy wans't even that good when he was a healthy starter. he was average terrible idea. lets throw a 30 million dollar tag on a 1 year rental QB when we could use that 30 million to improve the o-line or land a stud pass rusher and stop darnold from getting experiance in the process
But then you tie up like 25m on a back up. I know the Jets have the cap but that’s just crazy. Teddy, in one year, gets almost as much as Darnold’s 4 year contract.
Teddy's value goes up with every good pre-season showing he has. The only way his value goes higher is if he wins the starting job and plays well then gets traded at the deadline. If someone offers a 5th or 6th round pick for Teddy before the season starts I'd pass and keep Teddy to showcase him. If someone offers a 2nd round pick.... cya Teddy!
K. You are missing my point. IF Teddy played outstanding this season and Darnold did not...wouldn't you want Teddy around? That is my point. Of course Teddy isn't worth the Tag price at this current moment. C'mon man.
Trading Teddy and starting a baby would be a S.O.J. move. Look at the long term success teams have had sitting rookies for a year or two. Isnt that what we want as fans? Sustainable success year after year...we cant possibly be that impatient... McGown played his heart out last year...he is not elite but a quite serviceable backup. Teddy gives us the best chance to win for the next year or 2 while McGown assists in grooming Darnold. I hope these reports are not true unless he is traded for an established pass rusher(e.g. Miller).
The one position weve struggled with since ive became a fan all of a sudden is looking lovely and people are clamouring for a trade. Bridgewater is a proven talent...Darnold hasnt played a down and McGown is McGown.
If Teddy starts and plays well the first 8 games , how do you bench him, especially with the more winable games ahead? Then if Darnold struggles , franchise him. And do what? Start Teddy next year and keep Darnold on the Bench year 2? Or split the season again? Darnold is the future. Good or bad. If he fails , the new GM and coach will be drafting a QB again. Early...
One thing no one has considered in regards to Teddy's trade value is the other QB option available to any team who becomes needy. That Super Bowl MVP the Eagles are looking to deal. Foles will likely be the first choice for a QB needy team. Limiting Teddy's trade value.
Jet fans nightmare Darnold gets hurt 2nd week and Bridge was traded stuck with 40 year old journeyman
Proven what exactly? He was average before a massive injury that caused him to miss two full seasons. I still don’t know how anyone can expect him to come back and be anything other than average at best. Rooting for the guy because he’s a good human being and him being a good QB only helps us, but we need to be realistic. Also as many others have pointed out, he’s in a one year deal. If he plays well, he’s going to get starter money elsewhere. That’s why you capitalize on your asset (if he even turns into one) as soon as you can.
Darnold is not comparable to Geno and Sanchez. He's far superior to them in every way as a prospect. Especially mentally. His football IQ and maturity is through the roof compared to those two dolts
My example was a lazy one (I blame my two month old for that), but I think you get my point. Essentially, I want the Jets to keep Teddy. A franchise that has struggled mightily to find a FQB should never give away QBs with any potential.
