I mean I think we are 1 year away from thinking Bowles needs an 8–8 season to keep his job. If he was coaching for his job now there would have only been a 1 year extension.
Is he safe at six wins? At four? How about two? Do any of his decisions or actions that don't directly show up in the standings get considered?
I would say he gets a pass if Sam plays but if a veteran QB plays most if not all year and the offense and defense stinks and he does his usual in game blunders, who knows. That's the only scenario I see that would change what you said. I expect 8-8 this year so I hope its just talk. sick of losing period.
What benefits do an 8-8 season bring other than a fucking shit pick in the next draft ? We are still rebuilding, we will still be rebuilding until the day Darnald is the undisputed starter of this team, if that is two more seasons of 5 or less wins I couldn't care less, after this length of time and unless you have a nasty prognosis from the doctor time is now irrelevant, just as long as we get there and then stay there for a nice protracted spell, a 50 year bust followed by 2 seasons is no use to any of us. 8-8 is nothing but average, I know I got caught out cheering our early wins last season but in reality those fucking wins cost us a whole bunch of 2nd round picks.
The only scenario I see where the jets are better than 4-6 wins is teddy winning te starting job by a landslide and staying healthy all year. High hopes for Sam but rookie QBs lose more than they win and mccown is a career bad qb. Either of them start and I’d expect a long season if you are he’ll bent on winning now. Next year though!
When is eventually 8-8 in perpetuity or a few losing seasons and then 10 or more of sustained success or relative success for us. An 8-8 may kill this rebuild in the next draft, we are already short handed and there is many areas still in dire need. At the end of the day 8-8 only appeases short sighted fans desperate to see meaningless wins. I know it hasn't quite panned out at the browns but I feel it can only be a matter of time for them to catch the spark required, baker Mayfield may be that spark who knows. The jags played it right and are now about to benefit or would be if they upgraded at qb imo I have waited since 83/84 it hardly matters if it takes another 3 season, there is some light at the end of the tunnel, a little bit of patience required to see out this rebuild and then we can go for it. Shouting to sack Bowles and Mac every 5 minutes isn't going to help us really at the end of the day.
Yes, I can see your argument, but how often do 4-12 teams flip the switch the next season and become a contender? The JAGS were HORRIBLE for like a decade..... and drafted top 5 for half that time. It took major wholesale changes for that to happen. But yes, if you're always picking at the top of the draft, you'd think that you'll eventually have a stacked roster of young players, but those 2 players proved that it takes more than that. (JAGS needed a new patient owner that injected enthusiasm and a GM that could actually make picks... the Browns, well they're still the Browns) I'm not appeased by 8-8, but I will look at it as a positive step forward.... but yes, in reality another year drafting near the top would prob be beneficial, providing that the guys calling the shots are worthy of their jobs
Fair enough but how long have we been horrible for, it must be at least a decade now lol tbh I don't know how many teams have ever flipped a switch from 4-12 to winners but I see it more like when we have it all in place, going from our last losing season be it 4-12 or whatever to 10-6 not superbowl winners, a place in the play-offs followed by the same or better the season after and hopefully if the planets align in a jet formation superbowl winners in 4 season, the hard work begins then as we won't be picking at the top of the draft, it doesn't stop good teams or cheats for that matter but if we can sustain a constant threat through the life of Darnald's career then I will be a happy man, what we then do in the future is key to long term longevity or a return to shit for 10 seasons or more
I'm hoping we can have a Super Bowl win over the next 4 years before Darnold gets paid top dollar and it gets harder to retain other players. Maybe Sam can take a pay cut to help out.
8-8 is a huge step in the right direction and a building block towards a rebuild. Not hard to get that and only a handful of fans would have a hard time understanding. Just as most fans just don't get the importance of winning even in light of a 5 win season and only see the draft position. Most fans don't understand the game enough to see why you go for every win and get excited over a tank
Don't quite get your post especially the last sentence it seems out of step with the rest, I may have read it wrong. The majority seems to be in disagreement so will go from there. An 8-8 last season would mean we would have no Darnald, I understand the game enough to make that statement and in the end with some of the unlucky results we suffered 8-8 wasn't inconceivable last year and now how scary would that be with mccown and teddy gunslinging for number 1 qb.
Point is no HC is going to teach a young team to lose. No HC is going to lose his locker room by coaching to lose. No ownership is going to turn it's back on paying fans by heading out to lose. There are always QBs to get hold of, always ways to move up. The Bills made the playoffs for the first time in 17 years and got their QB. Fans just don't understand. I'll say it again. Tanking is for losers
I think the misunderstanding about tanking stems from who’s promoting the tanking. No player, no coach, no team or front office (outside of the NBA) is going to actively tank. But as FANS (who have zero control or impact on games) ROOTING for a tank, whilst loser-ish, is completely a reasonable desire. I wanted Sam more than I want sex with Emily Ratajkowski but one would last for 3 minutes tops and the other could last for 12 years. A meaningless win—for a FAN—in a lost season is, well, meaningless. Again, WE don’t control or impact what happens on the field but as a fan I am results oriented and if a loss in a lost season means we have a shot at San Darnold and we DON’T have to give up 2 2nds and count on the idiocy of two professional franchises to get him? Then count me as a loser. Focused on the good of the future of the franchise.
Who is coaching a team to lose ? Who said for a team to go out and lose on purpose ? I'll say it again 8-8 is for nobodies and will lead to nothing exciting. BTW don't be so disrespectful either, there isn't a need for it, people can have a different opinion than yourself and still have a brain that understands, I understood that the Bills had two firsts to play with which helped them jump up the board, but man using the Bills in any kind of positive argument, really
