no he did not have to. He didn't have to give Mccown $10 mill fully guaranteed and he didn't have to sign him in the first place. Similar to the Fitzpatrick mistake he allowed himself to be taken.
So who should he have signed and for how much? You realize his salary ranks him 24th of all QBs in the league and other than a handful of QBs, any starter lower than him is on a rookie contract. Throw in the fact that he was going all in on Cousins and got jilted. You understand the words “have to” has many different contexts. In this case he had to sign him and $10 million is peanuts for a starting QB. Oh, and on a 1 year deal unlike Fitz’s.
Am i supposed to feel better that his salary ranks him 24th in the league? The 50th best QB was handed 24th best money. That's not smart. Mccown was the only one that "had to" sign. It was either resigning here or spending the rest of his days on the couch. Macc had all the leverage in the world then and still screwed it up. That's very similar to the Fitz situation. Sign Mccown for less money. Sign a better QB in McCarron for half the price, like Buffalo did. Stick with Bridgewater, the rookie and a cheap backup.... Sign the QB for cheap that is twice as talented as McCown but pissed everyone off because of the national anthem. Idk, there were countless better decisions.
Who would you have signed? And for how much? Leverage is a funny thing, it swings back and forth at a whim.
And I’m not here to defend McCown and make him out to be better than he is but he was pretty much right around the 15th ranked starting QB last year by pretty much any measure. 50 is uneccessary hyperbole. He’s closer to the 1st QB in the league as opposed to the 50th. And I don’t even like the player.
Your forgetting that the Browns, Cardinals and Bills all had interest in McCown at the time. The Bills signed McCarron after McCown resigned. All 3 of them were looking for a starter who could also mentor the rookie QB.
And I’m a big McCarron fan and I would have liked to sign him but he’s never been a starting QB in the league so is THAT the guy you’re penciling in as your starter? Would that signing have prevented the Teddy signing? Offseason 20-20 hindsight is blinding.
Not sure I follow you , are you agreeing or disagreeing with my post? I was stating that multiple teams were interested in McCown. McCarron was a last resort for Buffalo. Personally, I prefer McCown as a mentor. I don't think signing McCarron would prevent the Teddy signing, in fact it may have been more of a necessity than a luxury.
I was agreeing with you. I’ve always liked McCarron but Mac would have been commiting negligence if he went into the season with McCarron-a guy who has never really started in the league, a near cripple and a first round draft pick as the depth chart. And I’m not a huge McCown fan but for all his faults, he’s a legit NFL starting QB and a tremendous asset to a young QB who you hope will be the face of your franchise.
Thank you Brandon Beane.... So will AJ McCarron win the starting job in Buffalo ? And will he remain the starter through our the season?
If signing mccown to a $10 mil guaranteed deal is the biggest mistake mac makes this year we will be just fine
I agree. McCarron may turn out to be a good QB, but is a complete unknown. Teddy's knee was and still is a major concern. McCown has a reputation as a mentor and is an asset in the QB room.
I hear McCown was demanding a $100M over four years, with $60M guaranteed with a no-trade clause. Macc talking him down to 1 yr, $10M. McCown caved in and signed it. Macc the Master!!!!
