Unbelievable - Mets build a 5-3 lead, Vargas gives it right back. 5 runs in 2 2/3 innings. Ridiculous.
And Blevins of course comes in, faces one lefthanded hitter, and pours gas on the fire. And now Sewald gives up two followup hits and the blowing of the 4-1 and 6-4 leads is complete. Below .500 tomorrow?
This doesn't make any sense. Callaway hasn't been here long but I must admit some of his comments & actions has made me raise an eyebrow. Do I think there's a high probability that if you put Familia in there the end result would have been the same? YES! I think Callaway thought that too. He's still your closer. Bottom of 9th save situation you go to your closer. Would have made sense to stay with Lugo if he hadn't already given up a run in the 8th. Callaway was supposed to be a pitching guru and he doesn't seem to have a feel who to use and when. With this bullpen I guess maybe that's too much to ask for. These guys just aren't doing what they are paid for.
Familia, Lugo, whatever - this bullpen is so awful that it hardly makes a difference. Callaway got credit for the first 12 games, so he gets blame for the next 38 - he's given no evidence that he has any particular clue what he's doing at this point, which doesn't bode well with a team that is full of players who are underperforming so completely.
In his last seven starts Jacob deGrom has a 0.45 ERA, 0.975 WHIP, and a 55:13 K:BB ratio. He is 2-0 in those starts.
