Its OK for people to have different opinions on the matter. I think when people get into the extremes of "America hating" and "White supremacist" is when everything falls off the rails. Its OK to disagree.

Personally, I would never kneel, sit, or not take my hat off for the national anthem. I would feel like I was disrespecting the military/flag. It's just not something I would do.

Having said that, I have no problem with players doing it as a form of peaceful protest. We've seen how terrible some protests can end up being. I think this was a foolish fight for the president to pick.

Those that fought the Vietnam war get the worst treatment. ... I hope your uncle gets the help he deserves. I believe the funds were cut for homeless vets as well. Social injustices just in general, are the reason why players kneel. If only others understood why they protested in the first place ... but the media brainwashes people

We are no different than China or North Korea in terms of propaganda.

My father certainly is not..... He stands behind the players 100%

and before you ask, he served in Vietnam in a position that had one of the highest casualty rates in the war.

PS.... we're also a bunch of honkeys :D

    I didn’t miss anything.

    Protesting is protected.

    Not protesting in the workplace.

Unless the employer makes it a rule.

    Which they just did.

I guess you missed the whole reason they are doing it in the first place.

When the national anthem is played at the beginning of a sporting event, it is an occurrence that exists in order to unify all the participants in the sporting event as citizens of our great nation. It happens so we can emphasize our commonalities as Americans despite the differences we have. Those differences include the teams we root for (or play on) and any political differences. Having ANY kind of protest during the national anthem ruins the event and goes against the whole point of the event.

Canada plays its National Anthem before NHL games and MLB games.

    Belgium too for soccer.

I understand that some European countries play the anthem before international games but not club games although I can’t swear to that.

    We’re not the only one.

Lots of ungrateful America-hating shitheads in this thread. I'm glad this thread exists as a reminder that these people are in and among us constantly; sometimes I forget. Such is their right. However, when the owner of the team is one of them, it's my right to denounce him and stop providing him with any of my money.

So, even warts and all, it’s not a great nation?

Am I happy I was born here instead of some other countries? Absolutely. I appreciate the freedoms I am afforded, but I also am not blinded by all the bullshit we are fed here. I see what is really going on. If you choose to look the other way, that is your choice.

That's forced patriotism. Vets and such did not go to war to come back to have forced patriotism. They fought for our freedoms, not a flag. What you are saying is the opposite of what our founding fathers fought for in the first place.

Who’s looking the other way, answer the question.

Even with all the bullshit you are being fed, this isn’t a “great” nation?

    Go ahead, say it.

This USED to be a great nation before unbridled greed and callousness towards our fellow citizens became the norm. Now we're a fragmented tribal nation several steps away from the 2nd Civil War. There is NOTHING "United" about the United States and anthem or not, standing for it serves no purpose in the present climate.

I disagree but at least you have to guts to admit it.

There are people here that love the country, like the country, tolerate the country, are ambivalent about the country, that detest this country.

I think somebody tried to tell me nobody detests this country.

The bolded was some of the things that made America great. Tolerance for differing opinions instead of insistence on strict adherence to a particular point of view. Nowadays, its "my way or the highway" with no room for a middle ground. Since that fits right in with the present political climate, the days of the "United" States are numbered unless something changes radically in the mindset of mainstream Americans of all shapes, sizes and colors.

I hate politics on a board. Should this thread be moved? I will point out for a "bad/shitty/crappy" country it is interesting so many people risk death to get into it. Also, all those who threaten or state they will leave if something they don't like happens almost always seem to stay......... Can it be improved ...absolutely. Is it perfect...nope. But one of the problems is when people cannot have civil discussions or meet and come up with reasonable solutions to complex problems. It is okay or even healthy to have disagreements but not when each side resorts to name calling and vilifying the other for no other purpose than to confuse undecided people as the politicians only seek more power. There is a huge difference from a statesman (one who is willing to do what he thinks is right tho potentially unpopular) and politicians who only seek power no matter the damage they cause to the country.
