Instead of Bruce Smith, I think the Jets FOs have been trying to get a Robert Mathis or a Dwight Freeney (OLB version). It seems like that was what the FO was trying to so when they grabbed a Gholston for Mangini's Jets, or a Coples for Ryan's squad. (At least Williams and Adams have been fairly productive for Bowles' Jets?) When I think about Bowles' Jets, the problem on defense is most definitely not first and second down. Typically, his schemes stuff opponents early. The biggest problem is third down. For whatever reason, the defense loses their shit/assignments and/or Bowles dials up pressure that never materializes, which leads to giving up a first or a big play. Instead of swinging for the fences, the FO might be better off trying to getting a player that can only rush the passer for those third down situations. It would certainly be nice to have an OLB/DE that can play exceptionally on all three downs, but, as history shows, that's hard for Jets FOs to find. So they might as well get a player that they know will certainly be great/exceptional on third down only because it's the situation with which they have the most problems. Think about how many more third and longs would have resulted in fourth downs if these Jets had a John Abraham (when he was on the Falcons) or a Bruce Irving. Anyways, I'm preaching to the choir. Dotson possesses a unique insight into this. He's played fairly recently, and likely understands schemes differently than, say, a MacCagnan might. But who knows.
The Jets are playing the numbers. Ideal conditions for turnovers and big defensive plays are third and long, and under heavy pressure. The Jets have been trying to artificially create these opportunities to generate big plays. The talent hasn't allowed it to succeed. All the fucking investment in defensive draft picks over the years and very little to show for it.
Theyve prioritized Versatility & filling spots on paper over playmaking ability repeatedly. This “multiple defense” that Rex & TB utilize is a evaluation killer.Theyd rather pick a guy who can fit in 10 different subpackages than 1 who get 10 sacks/Ints in a season.
Spot on! What exactly has that scheme versatility achieved? The Jets haven't exactly been fooling other teams and/or shutting them out. There's an old maxim that is very apt for the Jets approach to D: "Jack of all trades, master of none."
Another article on Jonn Carr . . . https://www.ganggreennation.com/2018/5/13/17349930/jets-new-college-scouting-director-is-jon-carr So, is Dotson still on board in some capacity?
I can't find anything really on Carr that links him to being a strictly defensive guy so I like him much better, Hopefully Dotson got exiled back to the frozen tundra of Green Bay
At the risk of going back to the real subject of this thread, is Dotson on board with the Jets or not? Who is in charge of what? Jon Carr or Alonzo Dotson? God knows we need help, as apparently there is a mismatch between the wisdom of our coaches schemes with the talent drafted.....particularly in defense. IMHO, We have been suffering for years, under both Rex and now Bowles, with watching good defensive players under achieve, poor game planning to the players strengths, and at times right out playing them out of their natural position . All this fancy smancy situational subpackages that turn 1st and 2nd rounders into gadget players does not do it for me, not to mention the fact the we burn precious time outs because no one seems to get the right formation in time to execute. The blame it on poor drafts versus poor coaching needs to come to a screeching stop soon. We need a draft guru that can read in between the lines as to what is really needed for this team to succeed long term, current schemes non withstanding.
Dotson was hired an area scout. Front office fanatic assumed he was going to be named director of college scouting. Carr was hired as director of college scouting.
Sorry guys! I saw an article and then saw a beat guy share and comment. Looks like the timing was just a huge coincidence. I hope Carr is a good hire though.....don't like the fact he was released recently.
I wouldn't worry to much about his release from Houston. New GM released most of the Front office staff to bring in his own people. (Not uncommon) Carr actually replaced Mac in Houston when he came over to the Jets.
He would have been the head of collegiate scouting when the Texans drafted Watson. Here's a link of the players the Texans have drafted since Carr replaced Mac: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/htx/draft.htm
So what's your overall evaluation of his performance as director of college scouting for Houston? It be interesting to know how much input he had prior to Mac's departure and if he had any influence on the hidden gem UDFAs Houston picked up like Foster.
To be honest, I don't follow the Texans or other NFL teams closely, so while I recognize some of those names from college or the NFL, I don't know much about them or how good they are. I thought that you and some others would better be able to comment on the quality of the players the Texans have drafted since he became head of College Scouting for them. On the following web site, the Texans list the 5th round picks they've taken in their draft history. Again, I don't know how good those players are. I'm just providing the info so that hopefully someone else can speak to the job Carr did with the Texans. http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...FL-Draft/7e900687-2f6f-4b26-89f8-66f2942cb605 5th round picks YEAR (pick) PLAYER POSITION 2015 (175) Keith Mumphery WR 2016 (159) K.J. Dillon S 2016 (166) D.J. Reader NT (Reader had a strong rookie season and started 14 games last year and played well according to the article.) 2017 (169) Treston Decoud CB I did some further research and looked at the Texans' depth chart for last season, their roster, and their draft classes since 2015. 2015 Their 1st round pick, was CB Kevin Johnson of Wake Forest is second on the depth chart at LCB. Their 2nd round pick ILB Bernardrick McKinney of Miss. St. is their starting RILB. Their 3rd round pick, WR Jaelen Strong of AZ St. is no longer on the team. Their 5th round pick, WR Keith Mumphery of Mich. St. is not on the team. Their 6th round picks were OLB Reshard Cliett of So. Fl. and DT Christian Covington of Rice. Covington is their backup LDE and Cliett is not on the team. 7th round pick RB Kenny Hilliard of LSU is not on the team. 2016 Their 1st round pick, WR Will Fuller (Notre Dame), is the starter at one WR position. Their 2nd round pick that year ( OG Nick Martin out of Notre Dame) is their starting C. Their 3rd round pick, WR Braxton Miller (Ohio St.) is still on the team and is projected to back up 2018 4th round pick . Their 4th round pick, RB Tyler Ervin is still on the team. They had two 5th round picks, S K.J. Dillon of WVA and NT D.J. Reader of Clemson. Reader is their starting NT and Dillon is no longer on the team. 2017 Their 1st round pick was QB Deshaun Watson of Clemson and he became their starting QB until injured. 2nd round pick LB Zach Cunningham of Vanderbilt is their starting LILB. 3rd round pick RB D'Onta Forman of the Univ. of Texas is their backup RB. Their 4th round picks were OT Julie'n Davenport of Bucknell and DT Carlos Watkins of Clemson. Davenport is their backup LT, and Watkins is their backup RDE. Their 5th round pick, CB Treston DeCoud of Oregon St. is a backup CB. Their 7th round pick was C Kyle Fuller of Baylor, and he is the backup LG. 2018 I don't know the details behind this draft, but the had 3 - 3rd round picks, a 4th round pick, 3 - 6th round picks and a 7th round pick. Their 3rd round picks were FS Justin Reid of Stanford, OT Martinas Rankin of Miss. St., and TE Jordan Akins of Central Florida. Their 4th round pick, WR Kekee Coutee of Texas Tech is already listed as the #3 WR on their depth chart. Their 6th round picks were DE Duke Ejiofor of Wake Forest, TE Jordan Thomas of Miss. St., and LB Peter Kalambayi of Stanford. Their 7th round pick was CB Jermaine Kelly of San Jose St. It remains to be seen what happens with the 2018 draft class, and we don't know how much input Carr had into the final decisions, but between 2015 - 2017 they had 20 draft picks (it looks like there was some trading up and down). Of those 20, only 5 are no longer on the team, and four of those were in 2015 (Strong, a 3rd round pick, Mumphery, a 5th round pick, Cliett, a 6th round pick, and Hilliard a 7th round pick),, and one was in 2016 (5th round pick K.J. Dillon). That's a pretty high percentage, and the only "higher" pick to fail was a 3rd rounder. Of the 15 that are still on the team, 6 are starters and 7 of the other 9 are their top backups 2nd string. That's pretty amazing! Imagine what the Jets would look like if they had drafted that well over the last 3 years!!!!! It looks like Carr could be an awesome choice.
Are you sure about this? I googled Dotson and can't find a single article, tweet or news report about Dotson becoming a scout for the Jets. He is still listed as a scout on the GB Packers Front Office web site: http://www.packers.com/team/front-office.html and is not listed on the Jets' Front Office web site: https://www.newyorkjets.com/team/front-office-roster/. Where did you see it? Do you have a link? It's puzzling to me that neither the Jets and Packers made a press release regarding this, and neither updated their Front Office web page. If nothing else, you'd think that the NFL would announce it or the Jets would on their official website. THen again, I can't find anything about the Jets hiring Carr on their website, so maybe it's just par for the course with the Jets. There's very little about him at all. He was a DT/DE for the Sooners and played briefly in the NFL. That's about it.
There are quite a few reports on google, from the Green Bay media, NY media and national media. Scouts are not worthy of a press conference or league announcement. Behind the scenes staff for the most part come and go with little fanfare. Green Bay lost several key scouts this off season and last , 3 named Alanzo in fact. I'm sure both teams will get around to updating their staff pages after player aquisition and roster changes slow down.
