How could the Pats arrange a meeting with him without pretending like they had a workable deal to get themselves into striking distance. The Pats interest was most likely just trying to learn about a QB that would potentially wind up on a division rival.
To answer your question, because they're the freaking Pats. You'd have to talk to Mayfield and/or his agent to get a definitive answer on that, and if they did meet with him or work him out. The Pats official (the agent didn't say who), could have been blowing smoke, but that Pats Official definitely made it sound like the Pats were very interested in Mayfield and were planning to move up for him if he was there. You can believe it or not.
Mayfield has a huge challenge helping turnaround the Browns franchise. If the Patriots were interested in Mayfield, it would have been Josh McDaniels not Belichick. With all the needs the Patriots have in their roster due to losing players, it didn't make sense to trade up and lose picks for Mayfield who would have been backing up Brady. It would have also pissed Brady even further. Mayfied may end up being the best QB in the draft, but I don't think he is a total sure thing. This may be the best draft class for QBs since 1983 which had the following top picks for QBs #1 John Elway #7 Todd Blackledge #14 Jim Kelly #15 Tony Eason #24 Ken Obrien #27 Dan Marino I always thought Ken Obrien was going to be a franchise QB for the Jets especially in 1985. My Patriots that year got their asses kicked in the Super Bowl even though they beat the Jets in the wild card playoffs.
