Trade Petty to Philly Give Hackenberg an uber ride to Hackensack Any and all "extra" reps should go to Darnold. We only need 3 QBs in camp. Darnold, Bridgewater, McCown
Plus with All the players in camp because of the expanded rosters there's a lot of passing drills, more than enough for all the QBs to get their reps in. Don't want anyone injuring themselves through over use.
Petty and hack would be that shady insurance that was cancelled the day before you needed it but they gave you a card so you could get your registration right.
If the Jets were smart, they would hire McCown to the staff in 2019. Of course, if he retires and wants a coaching gig.
I'd rather he be on the team in 2019 as primary backup.. maybe 2020 transition to coaching staff. that stability would be good for Darnold.
This is the correct approach. If he wins the job in training camp, then he should start. We should all hope this is the case.
Bowles likes to use 2 practice fields in the off-season. You put Petty & Hack on the 2nd field until the time comes to move on. Gotta have guys to throw on that field too.
Disagree on the investment being over. Next year, that may change. For now, there is no Nick Foles to be had. The reason you keep one around is for the minute chance they experience a eureka moment and suddenly become a legitimate NFL backup QB. If this happened, you are potentially saving the team from either using a mid round draft pick on QB in next years draft or handing out an overpriced contract to an expected backup. It is the idea of making your own luck, much as they did with Darnold. If you go the route of using the roster spot, who are these other players? At a minimum, any one they brought in would be someone they like less than everyone already on the roster, otherwise they would be here already. Do we bring back Jalin Marshall? If so, why not just cut the QB in the first case? Who is the free agent we bring in who improves the value on the roster spot today? This is honestly such a moot point it is barely worth discussing. They are both on the bubble, but they are here, for now, because they might be needed based on the way these things historically play out. That's all there is to it.
Pre-Season will be interesting for Petty or Hackenberg. No Jets fan will want to see them on the field. There is interest in Teddy, and of course Darnold, but every time McCown, Petty/Hack is on the field, fans will say WHY?!?!?!
I think a lot is pivoted by what Teddy's health is really like. If he is good to go the backfield will be crowded. Petty traded? Hack to the practice squad?
We have 5 QBs on the roster currently. Teddy could easily play the "Foles" role as long as he is healthy this season. So far for Teddy, so good. Next season, you look for other options, but to me the investment is over. The allocation of resources towards Petty and Hack have dwindled down. They haven't shown the ability to be a backup in this league. Sometimes (more than likely), the eureka moment doesn't happen. I would rather pick up a QB via FA next season. Also look at whose is available: - Colt McCoy - Landry Jones - Brett Hundley Colt would be a good backup here. Good examples of QBs that wont command top dollar that will be backups. To answer the roster spot question, you have to see what value they bring to training camp. A sleeper could be there and you don't want a crappy QB taking up that roster spot. Both don't have a future with the Jets. To me its a waste of time, no sense having them waste reps.
Where you and I don't see eye to eye on this is Bridgewater. You're convinced his injury days are behind him. I want to see him prove it through the preseason. If Bridgewater doesn't make it, and we cut Petty and Hackenberg, then we are entering next offseason with Darnold as the only experienced QB on the roster, since McCown will retire. I'd much rather have at least one other guy around in case there is a need for it for some reason. What you see as a waste of time, I see as a shrewd measure to mitigate risk.
I agree, we do have a disconnection on that. You act as if he's injury prone. He had A freak non-contact injury in practice. He had 2 years to rehabilitate that injury. If Mac is saying he's healthy, what does he have to win by lying? Now if he can't take a hit (which has yet to be seen which is fine, but Teddy is a tough guy), then yes you can pursue a 3rd QB via FA like a TJ Yates or Derek Anderson or Matt Moore. All are unsigned right now, they all bring more value then a Hack or Petty. I don't have a problem sticking Hack on the practice squad. Again, if you cut them, you can easily acquire a backup via FA (the ones I provided above won't be expensive) and whats wrong with dropping a late round pick on a developmental QB for 3rd on the depth chart? Hack / Petty aren't going to be backups, if they showed any ability to grab that position, they would've showed some flashes by now in a live game.
Have to get rid of them both, but Mac said Teddy was healthy so "if he can take a hit" there should be no reason why Hack and Petty are on this roster. We got our FQB, its time to rebuild the depth at that position.
I might be wrong about this, but I get the impression you have a much more black and white view of the world than I do, and perhaps we aren't understanding each other due to this. I'm not questioning Bridgewater's character, toughness, or any other factor about him. I'm looking at the fact that Minnesota let him walk due to uncertainty coming off a significant injury. This fact represents risk. I don't care how confident you are that he's moved past it, it is a risk for the team and professional organizations care quite a bit about risk. His contract reflects the risk. I agree that we can get a better QB option next year. But we aren't at next year, we are at right now. Right now they are what we have. Until the team has had observable on field evidence that he is truly over his issues, they have to plan for the worst case scenario. When you don't do this, you inevitably get caught with your pants down and look foolish as a result.
There are plenty of grey areas but we never talked about them, if you want to go into the fact that Minnesota let him walk, lets talk about that. The fact of the real matter is they found another QB that is healthy, productive and a top 10-15 QB in the NFL. To them it was a clear upgrade. Why would they pick up on Teddy's option if they were going to pay Cousins? Is the coach going to publicly say, "yeah we upgraded and didn't want to pick up on Teddys option cause of it". That is a bad look and a bad PR statement. The coach and Teddy have a great history together, so it was a hard decision for them. Vikings poured a lot of money into Teddy getting healthy again. Teddy was on the field for a play for the Vikings during a regular season game, if he weren't healthy would they risk that? The man is rusty as shit and needed rehabilitation and needs reps to get back to form. If you want to question him getting hurt again, then that's fine, but he was durable prior to that freak incident. You have to remember HOW he got hurt in the first place. That is the true reason why we are disagreeing. If he gets hurt again they move on and call Hack up from the PS. I'm on board with the Hack on the PS thing. The depth must be rebuilt. I say go with Darnold, Teddy and McCown with Hack on the PS this year. Worry about next year, next year. Maybe I'll sign Colt McCoy and draft another developmental late next year. Petty has to go. Hack will not get reps, perhaps maybe some garbage ones, but hes on the outside looking in.
Our QB picture hasn’t been clear heading into TC since 2011... 2012 Tebow 2013 Geno vs Mark... Mark wins and gets hurt 2014 Geno vs Vick... Rex never names a starter out of spite 2015 Geno gets clocked 2016 Fitz holds out 2017 Josh vs Hack vs Petty 2018 Will Sam be ready? Hopefully Darnold is able to make this the last such offseason for a very long time
