Rex went to Marks pro day and feel in love with him. Declared Sanchez was his guy and was the one who named him starting QB. He also wanted Favre gone, lost that option.
LOL come on dude. Favre only came to the Jets to play a season, fake retire and then go to the Vikings for revenge. He would have gone to Minny as a FA with the Jets not even in the equation if the Packers didn't catch him making calls to the Vikings personnel dept on a Packers-provided cell phone. He came out of retirement after the Jets couldn't afford to keep him and just in time to miss most of the Vikings' training camp.
For are all the people quoting my posts in this thread, I really don’t think I have to defend my dissapointment in the pick. He is 24.5 years old (will be 25 this season), Division 2, and wasn't an offensive lineman. Those are my reasons and I don’t think they are way out of line. I want Sam Darnold to be a success and I think the Jets took a risk not adding to the offensive line in the 3rd Round rather than pick a 24.5 year old D2 DT.
C'mon man, that's bullshit.... Rex said that he personally called Favre to ask him to come out of "retirement" and stay with the JETS
This post is just hilarious. Gholston and Coples were busts from day 1. They just din't have the desire, and that speaks volumes between them and about Shepherd. Gholston had ZERO desire to be an NFL player based on his performance. There is no possible close comparison between Coples who was slow, lighter in weight and a great magician for pulling a disappearing act on just about 75% of his plays compared to a player like Shepherd. Coples had those issues coming right out of college which I was very concerned about along with many others. He was a bust from day 1. Shepherd's motor and ambitions to be an NFL player will out do in 1 season what Coples failed to do in his short stint with the Jets, imo. What Shepherd offers to the Jets is something desired by all NFL teams, a high motor and relentless determination. I think this along with his size and quickness is worth the 3rd pick.
Your last paragraph is 100% spot on. There's a reason he had round 2 grades from some analysts and a round 3 grade lowest from all of them: he projects to be a very solid pro player with proper development. I feel like a broken record, but using this pick on a DT MAKES SENSE considering our D-line has been dismantled over the last year. We made tweaks to the OL in free agency and we will be getting two of our better lineman back and healthy, which neither were for a huge portion of last year. If one of your criticisms of this pick is that it wasn't on offensive lineman, it's not a valid criticism. DL was just as much of a need as OL this draft.
Dude's been broke, he has life experience, self made and he's hungry.... He may not be here for a longtime, but I expect him to hustle and be a positive influence in the lockerroom
Initially. Them decided to start fresh with a draft pick. Favre didn't go into retirement, he was let go by the Jets to go somewhere else
And the OL you wanted that would help out more than a 24.3378 year old DL. At a position of need? Please do not say Brown. Love the idea that we needed an OL and all Macc had to do was call out a name and poof, the horrible OL would be fixed.
Jets had him under contract. Could have said retire the. Should have at least held on to him to trade him to Minny. Affording him want an issue Doesn't make a difference, Rex wanted to start fresh with his guy. Nothing wrong with that. Not getting the debate, my post was Rex wanted to move on to his guy. We can't then bring up that he won with him as if he didn't have anything to do with Sanchez
Wrong. He said he was staying retired if he wasn't released. Could the JETS have called his bluff? sure. But there was also a "no-trade" clause to an NFC north team as part of the trade deal with GB, so finally the JETS just said fukit and released him. ..... and that's why I lost lost all respect for Mr. Wranglers PS... don't use a shovel to get out of a hole
True forgot about the no trade deal. I was thinking more of the idea they could have forever him to stay. My point still is Rex wanted to get his guy in place, start fresh with a new guy. Sanchez was it
yeah, Favre played us... in retrospect, on one hand it was time to move on from the Pennington experience and Favre could just be seen as any other "bridge quarterback" like McCown or something, I guess. But it does fry your ass a little that he played us like that. His time here was never about the team anyway it was only about Brett Favre. Screw him
I wasnt against aquiring Favre, I was STOKED! (and wouldve been happier with a real coaching staff to take advantage) What I was pissed is how he played the JETS at the end. If I was in charge I wouldve held onto that contract and said F yewwwwwww
I don't think Mangini and his staff was an issue. We were 8-3, in first after beating the Pats in NE and then Farve blows a bicep. Jet luck strikes
That year had some of the worst game planning & play calling I've EVER seen... and is what showed him the door
Mangina choked. down the stretch they had Darrelle Revis in his prime and Ty Law on the other side.....and they were giving receivers 10 yards of cushion. Then you had Schottenheimer being Schottenheimer.... best OL in football and a beast running back and they are chucking it 40 times a game, rain/wind/snow
Looking back, we had a Super Bowl window from 2008-2010 and the best we could do was go to 2 AFC Championship games. Coaching, QB play, coming out flat in Pitt, etc.... all played a role in not getting to the big game.
