On SportsCenter they showed what happened with former defensive end Dennis Byrd in a regular season game against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Meadowlands. I remember they were getting beat by the Chiefs and the accidental hit that happened. He's still walking, but unfortunatly he looks to be in worse shape than what happened to him so long ago. He doesn't complain he is the defensive coach for his local high school and he has high spirits about himself. Thank goodness he is doing o.k. #90 isn't retired, but no NY Jets player will ever wear that number because it belongs to Byrd.
Damn I remember that injury like it was yesterday. It took the wind out of my sails for weeks , and I didn't have internet in those days. I did a presentation on Byrd and that accident and his subsequant recovery , went very well , and people who didn't even like football could relate to the story. DB#90
Your post whoring is really starting to annoy me. As far as Byrd goes, I saw it on Sportscenter too. Glad, he's doing fine.
Unfortunately I missed the piece, I was at the game that day and the play happened right down in my endzone. Very sobering experience.....
Gonna watch the peice coming up on the Sportscenter replay. But that day I remember very clearly. I was young and it was a brutal hit. I was only 9 and it was in my early years of going to Jets games. But I still get chills thinking about #90 laying on the ground motionless. Wish you the best Byrd. A very sad day in the NFL. Youth
I don't think so, the play happened close to the goal line. I think they were on the 5-10 yard line trying to score. I'll see if I can find the game stats...
I saw what happened to Dennis. Just a tough time for the Jets. I am glad he made the very most out of the cards he was dealt and never felt sorry for himself. I know this much about Dennis, if he were in his prime here today, he would be a true Mangini guy.
I think the Chiefs were going the other way I was at the game and the play occurred in the end of the field I was sittng on.... I do think the next play was a long pass downfield to sort of rub salt in the fresh wound bad memories all around Think my buddies and i were pretty drunk and were yelling things out that I immediately regretted
I posted this in another thread: Just thought I would share again... "Best meet of a player though was Dennis Byrd at the Fudruckers in East Meadow. I was wearing my Micley Shuler Jersey and he gave me the thumbs up as he walked by. Before I left I went and talked with him he asked me to sit and we talked football for about a 1/2 hour." I saw the ESPN piece this morning...it brought me back to my meeting him in the Summer of 1992. A super nice guy.... I've always been curious to know if the Jets have reached out to him in the last 10 years or so to see if he would attend a game...maybe along the lines of honorary captian for the day. He could be on the field for the coin toss. I would think that would be a rush for a guy who still has that strong desire and love for the game. Plus, I would think that a lot of fans would really like to see him on the field. Also cool that he named his dog JET.
They did throw a bomb right after I'm pretty sure - they wanted to take advantage of the long delay. I recall Schottenhemier taking offense to a reporter after the game asking him that very question.......
great video on byrd...i was at that game where he first walked again, and it was an awesome moment...wish him all the best
