You're not the only one. Analytics have produced a boring form of baseball. All-or-nothing, with ABs ending in a strikeout, walk or HR. Swing on 0-2 like it's 3-1. Pull and uppercut everything. Treat a starting pitcher like Iron Man McGinnity if he goes six innings. Trot in three or four relievers in every game.
Relievers drive me nuts. I get left specialists like Blevins of the Mets. They've been there for awhile. Drives me nuts when a guy comes in get an out and then pull him. If they're doing well give them another batter or two. Might save an arm or two for the next game.
The Yankees are up 4-0 tonight. Someone must have told David Price that this is a big game, and he went into his big-game choke mode. Teams have lefty specialists, righty specialists etc. Price is the Red Sox's small-game specialist.
I disagree with the rotation being weak I actually think it's been underrated for a few years now..I think it's just the analytics of baseball taking over now which gets starters out of the game before the third time around regardless of how they are pitching...I think both Girardi and Boone are both slaves to the numbers and the front office has a lot to do with it.
I just don't see any pitcher in that rotation that's the guy I want starting a must-win game or a big post-season game.. Maybe Severino develops into that guy, but he's not there yet. Tanaka might have been that guy if he hadn't hurt his elbow. Sabathia was that guy, but time has taken its toll. As long as Cashman is GM, you will never see a Yankee manager who is not a slave to the numbers.
Unfortunately analytics are not a Yankee thing it's a baseball 2018 thing..not many teams out there who have old school managers these days.
It's still 13 games into the year and alot of baseball. That being said I think expectactions were so high for this team that the season would be a disappointment. The starting staff was ok last year and is not doing great. The staff looked better because of the pen and the staff looks worse because they can't hand leads to the pen. The Yankees really should've signed a starter or two. Putting a bat like Stanton in any lineup is a help. But when you already have two or three guys who strikeout often like Judge and Sanchez plus Stanton 1/3rd is strikeout prone it will ruin rallies and make it hard to have comebacks. They are the Yankess and have too many good pieces not to compete until the end but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think Memorial Day weekend is the real time to look at your record and figure out where you stand. So I am worried but not at full tilt yet. Another month or so.
Can't wait for Torres to get called up. Wade needs to be sent down. Torreyes should not start at 3b. Andujar needs to start there and continue to adjust to big league pitching. He's starting to show signs up life at the plate.
I don't get it, he was an ace or close to one in Oakland before an injury plagued 2016. Was solid last year before we got him.
Andujar is showing that he belongs. Nice outing for Monty. I'm not worried about the standings now even with Boston winning almost everyday. Still a long way to go.
Gleyber Torres to be called up tomorrow. Can't wait. Hopefully Wade is sent down. Guy is clearly not ready for the big leagues now.
