Rosen vs Mayfield at the 3 pick - what the film shows

Discussion in 'Draft' started by GasedAndConfused, Mar 26, 2018.

?

If Darnold and Allen are gone, who would you pick with the 3rd pick?

  1. Rosen

    69.0%
  2. Mayfield

    31.0%

You nailed it. That is by far the best distinction between Rosen and Baker, when the play brakes down, Rosen falters, when the play is on, be it a roll out or mostly from the pocket, he is dead nuts on. Darnold actually to a lesser extent, because when he is in trouble the ratio of bone head interceptions to miracle throws is not really all that pretty just from watching him play. But I don't have real data to back it up.

I want to like Darnold more than I actually like him. His bowl game 2 years ago vs Penn State was incredible, but he’s never reached that height again. His film is actually pretty unremarkable. He has a hitch in his throwing motion. Most of his passes are rainbows with a lack of velocity. He’s constantly underthrowing wr’s. He reminds me of Bortles in some respects except worse arm, better accuracy. Sure if I listen to the experts, he’s the best in this class + top pick, but I’m really mixed when I watch his film. I think he could develop as he’s young, but I wouldn’t cry if the Jets passed on him for another one of these qbs.

yeah darnold is an interesting one, he shows a lot of potential for greatness but only in spurts. he has the smallest resume of the other QBs and he's also the youngest (only 20 years old). Rosen is really the only one that already looks like an NFL QB on film. not a single person has knocked rosen's ability. all his negatives are could be injury prone and kind of a know it all

Actually I think you're being too harsh about Rosen's ability to handle a broken pocket. Watch the tape...he moves deceptively well, and keeps looking to make the play, which is different than the other three who all scramble and then look to see what's there. This causes Rosen to take more hits, not because he's not mobile, but because he sticks with the play longer. He's going to have to make adjustments in the pros, by learning to scramble more and to throw it away sooner and live for the next down. I agree it's a concern, but I don't agree he can't fix it.

All I was saying is he hasn't proven himself to the same extent, doesn't mean he can't do it. The other guys have more of a track record of success there.

very well said. rosen isn't mobile, but he knows how to work the pocket well. most of the best QBs in the NFL fall in the same category (brady and peyton manning)

at the college level. wait until the face an NFL defense. 99% of people they played against won't start an NFL game in their lifetime

You do realize how backwards this logic is? You need to apply the same to Rosen.

pocket play translate to the NFL though, being a "mobile" QB hat isn't athletic enough on the NFL level is completely different. Brad smith was a god in college as a dual threat, but wasn't cut out to play QB in the NFL

How I feel too.... I keep thinking "What am I NOT seeing in this guy?"

Also, another certain young QB had his best performance vs Penn State also o_O

I though it was excellent. I really like the way he did the comparison. Latest muck draft I saw BTW has a real twist. Jets take Baker at 3 and NE takes Rosen at 4. Irrespective who picks who between 3-4 that to me could turn out to be either really sickening or really exhilarating to the Jets fans depending on the outcome of events. If we pick right we can change the course of destinity with a bright future for the Jets, If we miss on the next savior and it goes to our enemy NE ........ well, it would be too revolting to even think about it.

I really don't see this happening (NE going to 4). At least using the widely distributed draft trade chart, there is a recent history of teams moving into top 5 and paying something like 30% premium to get there (Jets just paid 35% in value to move from 6 to 3). I don't know what incentive Cleveland would have to charge less when they can walk away with Saquon Barkley, who would be an enormous weapon for Darnold or whoever, or Bradley Chubb who would be a beast along side Myles Garrett. Assuming NE needs to pay the markup (this applies to BUF and MIA too), even with all the picks they have, the cost to get up to 2 or 4 would be absolutely astronomical.

Buffalo might be able to pull it off, but it is still an insane cost. I think it is more likely they are all getting QBs out of the top 3, if at all. At least one will end up with either Jackson or Allen. I still see Falk or White to NE.

I respect your judgement and hope you are 100% correct. I still have dreams of Rosen in long wavy hair ( minus the knee brace) as the second coming and poor man version of Joe Namath.

Lol! Chosen Rosen indeed, though with that look he's probably more Mary Jane Rottencrotch than Joe Willie Namath.

There are a few things we know for absolute certain about this draft, no different than any other draft.
1- The commissioner will be booed unmercifully at the opening
2- The Jet fans in attendance will be in major disarray with the third pick no matter what. Most with that blank " Oh my God, why, why, why, who, who who stare" no matter who the chosen one is
3- Kiper hair style will even make Trump's look good
4- Jet fans might all be asleep before the third pick.
5- Mac and Bowles will both have understated big smiles, somber grey suit and Jet green matching ties
6- We will continue to find some raw gems after the draft is done
7- Pitsburgh will continue to be commended for their selections no matter what
8- Cleveland will be criticized for their selections no matter what

    Can't wait

Marino was an inaccurate INT machine in college. Tony Eason and Todd Blackledge who both went higher than Marino and were both busts and both were better in College. Kenny O was a lot like Joe Flacco coming out. Great player on a small school program. It's not fair to compare him to either Mayfield or Allen. I suspect with the new rules in place Kenny would be a pretty good NFL QB. He was pretty good in an era where the QB was pretty much unprotected. Accuracy wasn't Kenny's problem, mobility was. Allen doesn't remotely remind me of Kenny O. Allen is a much better athlete.

There is no doubt based on film, despite Marino's accuracy issues he would have gone behind Elway if it wasn't for the drug rumors.
