Why the hell is anyone listening to Ryan Leaf? I’d be interested to hear what Philip Rivers, an actual successful NFL quarterback, has to say about the angry arrogant competitive guys…
The Big 12 is a joke defense-wise. No wonder Mayfield's stats are so good. His WR are wide open half the time too. That is why it is hard for me to truly evaluate him. Most would say Georgia has a great defense. In the Rose Bowl Mayfield was 23/35 287 yards 2TD 1INT against them then did nothing in OT. I thought the playcalls were weak though by Oklahoma in OT. Yeah, no way Mayfield drops to #7 now. His stock is as high as it will ever be. If the Jets pass on him, he will surely be picked at #5 or #6 at the latest.
Better then listening to anyone fan on this board. He was actually on point with calling Watson the best QB of the draft the last one. So he does deserve some merit. Just because you weren't a great QB in the NFL, doesn't mean you can't recognize talent. How many backup QBs are currently coaches in the NFL?
He’s not forming his opinion based on talent. He’s trying to draw comparisons between himself and Mayfield using intangible traits. That’s just foolish. The same traits that you can apply to losers like Leaf can be applied to Cam Newton and Phillip Rivers... two guys we would take in a heartbeat.
What about Rivers is similar to Leaf? Also, when I read it, it wasn't just about Leaf, it was about Mayfield's personality in general. The guy has a point. I question it myself. It goes back to the Kansas game where he bitched about not getting a handshake from the opponents. So when things don't go well for Mayfield, how WILL he react? When hes dealt with adversity he transferred schools. This is the NFL. BTW Cam does not handle adversity well. Hes very immature. Also cocky in the fact that he never improved his mechanics to be more accurate.
You replied to my post insinuating that we should put some stock into his words because he’s been able to “evaluate talent“ in the past. What he saying about Mayfield has absolutely nothing to do with talent and all about his opinion of the way Mayfield carries himself because it’s similar to the way he himself did. That’s just complete conjecture and another opinion and there should be absolutely no stock put into that. I’m also not drawing comparisons between Rivers and Leaf, I’m drawing comparisons between the perception of Rivers and the perception of Mayfield (which is what Leaf’s entire projection that you posted is based on). They are both extremely similar and if leaf is going to say that the way Mayfield carries himself could lead him to be a bust, you can look and a handful of other quarterbacks and go, that’s not going to be a problem at all. Of course his temper and his brash personality is something you have to take into consideration but to me, it’s pointless to try and pretend we know what he’s going to turn out to based off the way he carries himself before he even plays an NFL snap.
I never said that numbers do tell the complete story. Mayfield's numbers probably would be lesser playing for Wyoming instead of Oklahoma, but he didn't have to play at Wyoming because he was good enough not to. Allen? Not so much. Yes, Mayfield wouldn't have won the Heisman or those other awards and wouldn't have the recognition he did because of playing at Wyoming and having lesser success. I believe that he would have done a lot more with that team than Allen did, however, and knowledgeable scouts and GMs would have seen the potential in Mayfield. He probably wouldn't have been a first round pick, much less a high first round pick, but some team who had done their homework would have gotten a steal in whatever round in which they drafted him. Then again, who knows? Perhaps if his mother hadn't been ill, he had been able to get to the Sr. Bowl on time, and play more he would have been the talk rather than Allen, and Mayfield could have been one of those players who shot up draft boards late. Accurate is accurate regardless of whether the receivers catch the ball or not. Processing quickly, making great decisions, getting the ball out quickly, or being able to move well in the pocket or roll out to extend plays would have been noticed by scouts and he would have been recognized for his excellent potential.
You got a like for your sense of humor. I good a good chuckle out of your post. Good luck with that Allen thing. You'll need it if the Jets draft him.
No, you can't project that either. In fact, I think it much more likely that they'd only have won 7-8 games (if that) due to his slow processing, mediocre decision making, and inaccuracy.
I'm not putting "stock" into his words, I said that about Mayfield much earlier so its interesting to see a professional athlete say the same thing. I'm a psychologist at heart. So ask yourself the question, when the chips are down how will Mayfield react? In your opinion, in comparison to other QBs? NY is one of the toughest cities to play for. So if you start acting the way Mayfield acted, then well it won't go well. We've seen him bitch and complain in the past. I see you saying a whole lot of other stuff, but nothing really relevant to the question at hand.
Mayfield has a stronger arm than Rosen. If Mayfield isn't gonna work well in the NE, then Rosen would be a flat out bust!
And the Pac 12 isn't a joke defense-wise? As for the Rose Bowl, you do realize that Mayfield took a shot in the ribs on the first play of the 2nd half, don't you? He was hurting for the rest of the game, and the OC for Oklahoma probably had no choice but to dial things back.
It's not likely at all OK has won 10 or more games 15 out of the last 20 years with several QB's who were complete washouts at the NFL level. Bradford, who was the best of them when healthy is a 500 QB in the NFL. What you can project is wash out NFL QB will put up very good stats at OK and win 10 to 12 games in the same program. OK QB will be overdraft and make a boatload of money at the NFL level and do nothing to warrant it. OK is a program that routinely wins 10 to 12 games with a QB who can't play at the NFL level.
Nope. Didn't realize that. Makes sense then. I was wondering why he wasn't more involved in OT. I don't watch the Pac 12 as much, but yeah they are weak as well. Don't forget, I like Mayfield. I just would take Darnold, Rosen, and Allen before him. Especially after trading up to #3 overall. Many reports say the Jets want him. If true: I will fully support that pick and hope he becomes the next Broadway Joe.
Your first reply to me said that we should put stock in his words because he’s able to evaluate talent. Not those exact words but that was the sentiment. So this is confusing to me. Asking myself how Mayfield will react in certain situations is a waste of my own time. You can speculate all you want but speculation doesn’t always lead to the correct results. Like I said it’s something you have to take into consideration but not drafting a QB as good as Mayfield based off what you think might happen is dumber than drafting a QB as bad as Allen based offf what you think might happen.
No it's not a waste of your time. Nothing is a waste of your time if you are looking for a player to lead your franchise for 15 years. Besides, I don't even like Allen. I am very lukewarm on him, just like Mayfield. Personally, I don't want to draft them, but its more than likely happening if Rosen goes 2
You forgot jetsam, you idiot! Because that's all the Jets will ever be! I can't believe no-one ever picked Jetsam as a handle! Probably too busy reading articles in a filthy Playboy Magazine! Signed, -Mrs. championjets69
TBF, Mayfield was great against OSU, and was pretty damn good against Georgia until he got hurt to start the 2nd half, and yes, the play calling wasn't very good which didn't help him. And it's unlikely that he would've fallen to #6, and less likely now.
