i think that line right there says it all. i mean we all knew he was stuggling this year but wow, that's just amazingly bad. i'm less concerned with individual play though compared to the overall defense, which has been very good the past few weeks. you certainly have to be concerned about him at this point.
Yes for sure he is not living up to his hype on this board. For sure the D certainly now seems to be on the fast track to success excluding JV. I wonder how good we would be if he was a really dominant MLB
O well I read the NY papers every day & have from time to time posted articles I felt had interest in the past
I posted the stats a while back that even when he was leading the league in tackles, the majority of them were down the field. I still believe he is a good player and a great defensive captain and leader, but I tend to agree he is a bit overrated sometimes.....
The defense has held the Pats, Bears and Texans down in consecutive weeks. Vilma is right in the middle of that, calling signals and making tackles, so I don't see what the problem is. If the defense is playing well and he's on it why is JV a problem? His role is not to rush the QB, and standing in the middle of the field it's hard to tackle a RB behind the line. Those are outside LB plays. Vilma is doing fine. He's not Urlacher, but he's not a bum either.....and Urlacher, as great as he is, he kinda got punked himself by Brady last week.
VILMA : " Ten players who will determine the NFL playoff race " ~ ~ ~ Spheres of influence Ten players who will determine the NFL playoff race Posted: Tuesday November 28, 2006 11:24AM; Updated: Tuesday November 28, 2006 11:01PM After playing a pivotal role in the Giants' three-game losing slide, Eli Manning likely doesn't have many fans outside of his family. John Iacono/SI If we learned one important thing from the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, it's that a struggling team can turn into a Super Bowl champion as soon as Thanksgiving passes. That's why these next five weeks will tell us everything we need to know about who belongs in the postseason and who doesn't. Has this season been unpredictable so far? Damn right. But as one NFL coach once told me, the best part about a 16-game season is that the good teams eventually rise above the pack while the bad ones generally fade away. The key is figuring out what factors will impact the rising and the falling. With that in mind, here's my list of 10 players who will have the biggest influence on the playoff race as the season winds to a close: ~ ~ ~ 10. Jonathan Vilma: The New York Jets inside linebacker has ranked among the league leaders in tackles all season but he's also been producing in a 3-4 system that doesn't play to his strengths. At 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, Vilma doesn't have the prototypical size to take on guards and centers in that scheme and opposing teams have exploited that fact at various times this year. If the surprising Jets are going to stay in contention, he'll have to keep playing at his best for a defense that really doesn't have adequate personnel for the 3-4. > http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jeffri_chadiha/11/28/playoff.race/index.html
Very accurate assessment. If Vilma can become a force in the 3-4 then the Jet's defense will be a force. If he is just a stopgap player then the Jet's 3-4 will flicker in and out of consistency from game to game. Obviously the key player on the defense right now is Kerry Rhodes and it would really help if Vilma got things figured out and joined him.
I'm not a stat guy....I think hes the leader of the defense....if u watch the games he makes the calls @ the line and the Defense has been playing lights out as of late. I think he's doing fine....hes in a new system and i still think we need a better NT either draft or FA.....Vilima will get it right....to much talent and drive to write him off already....he'll make plays just wait and see.
what are you talking about? he is no worse than zach thomas, ray lewis, donnie edwards and all those other afc pro bowl mlbs
A better question is what are YOU talking about? You've seen that he's made 2 plays behind the LOS and has 1 turnover on the year. What can you offer to support your contention that he's as good as those players you mentioned?
Stop making sense. People are busy trashing the leader and signal caller of our most effective unit, please don't disturb them. Until we actually lose another game, this will have to keep them occupied.
Hobson is an OLB, its his job to make more plays. Vilma must absorb blockers and fill gaps in the running game. I think all is well right now with the LB's
alright how about that: - zach thomas has Z-E-R-O forced fumbles and only 1 INT. he also has only 2 TFL (tackle for loss). wow, he sucks. i thought he was a top 3 MLB in the afc? - ray lewis has only 3 TFL. Z-E-R-O forced fumbles and only 2 interceptions. hall of fame anyone? - donnie edwards has Z-E-R-O TFL (!) so what are your expectations anyway? i dont get it. vilma just switched to ILB, he's still learning the position and our defense.
Like everyone else, I think opposing offenses look at the Jets and say "Hey look Vilma is undersized, we can attack the Jets There".... So, they game plan a lot around Vilma. He's not playing lights out but, he more than holds his own and takes on the brunt of what's coming, opening everything up for Rhodes, Barton, Hobson, Thomas etc etc..... He's doing just fine...... The Key to the Jets staying in this race is ALL on the offense, Chad, the running game and not making turnovers. Vilma is the least of our worries.
