I don't know if by saying they are more "polished" you are suggesting they will have better careers or not but if so I disagree. There is a major push in high schools to get people to focus everything on one sport or one position but that is wrong IMO. Multi-sport & multi-positional athletes prove time and time again to have more success. Darnold is a "football player" and Rosen is an "athlete playing quarterback." Personally I'd take the football player any day if given the choice. The Jets might not have that choice even at pick number 3!!
The Jets are double-checking hard on Mayfield because he may be the forced choice at 3 if the Cali boys go off the board 1-2. I still think there's a good chance that the QB's go a bit later than projected as a group. I could see QB on the 1 or 2 with Chubb taken on the other pick and then the Jets getting QB#2 on the 3. Then the Browns taking Barkley on the 4 if they took QB#1 on the 1 followed by Denver choosing to go with Nelson or Fitzpatrick on the 5 since QB#3 is not worth the pick to them when matched up against an elite talent. That puts the Colts on the 6, with QB#3 still available and lots of people calling to inquire, calls they will happily take with Chubb, Barkley and Nelson off the board and less likely to take if Nelson is still there.
If Mac took Chubb at 3, I'd understand why people here would be ticked off. And is it really a guarantee that Chubb will be a star while Mayfield and Allen won't?
A QB would have way more of an impact on the game than a DE. Chubb gonna be tired as shit with us being on the field 40 minutes a game.
My take on this is that in high school Rosen was a QB and Darnold was a multi-sport player, playing multiple positions in football before settling on QB. Being in the defensive meetings early on certainly did not help Darnold's development as a QB. He was a LB/WR on JV his freshman year and he started his sophomore year as a LB and got put on the field at QB after two injuries had taken out the only QB's the team had ready. He performed excellently in that role, as a natural athlete with a good arm, size and mobility is likely to perform at the high school level and won the job for his Junior year before the broken foot (in basketball) took him off the field. Just the fact that he was still playing basketball as the starting QB for San Clemente tells you that he was not fully invested in football at that point. Both seasons happen concurrently and so while Darnold was learning zones and press defenses and how to handle the pick-and-roll part time Rosen was just thinking about being a QB. If both of them stay healthy I think Rosen is going to be much better early in his career and that things may even out after a few years as Darnold fully comes into his own as a QB.
Could've gotten Mahomes at 6 last year. Instead, we got a safety who may being an All Pro, but won't have nearly the level of impact a FQB would.
We still do not know if Mahomes is going to be a FQB. Andy Reid has a pretty good track record with young QB's however Mahomes still has some hurdles to get over before he achieves that level. If Jamal Adams is not a Pro Bowl safety in a year or two it will be surprising. I guess if Bowles keeps using him as the Rooster it is possible, since that role picks up TFL's and sacks not interceptions and pass defensed.
I really hope Mahomes is a colossal failure. For as much crowning as he gets for someone who has accomplished nothing I think it would be funny. plus fuck the chiefs
I’d say it’s the same contingency plan they have if the guy they end up picking busts. And I know mac is taking a qb, I am just saying taking the edge guy when you need one is better than taking a qb for the sake of taking a qb when the edge rusher is rated higher.
That would be epic. Especially that Barkley gets all the love. Chubb is beastly and I wouldn't be the least surprised if he goes before Barkley. If Darnold and Rosen are off the board It's gonna be insanity whoever they pick. The hate will flow lol.
But every other hypothetical has been beaten to death. This is all we have left and still 17 days to go.
Again you didn't read the post, sonny. I was NOT comparing Mahomes to Petty but to our FUTURE rookie QB which Mahomes once was. Bowles is a bad coach who you defend..good for you. HE is responsible for the teams record..doncha think? Toward the end of this past season many fans were crying out for him to at least have Hack take the field when we were practically 5-11 but he would not do it. He favored McCown . Its rumored Ardarius Stewart and the other young wide receivers will get some playing time this year..we will see YOU got fairly nasty with your defensive comments when clearly you were wrong. I done with ya..and wont miss reading your posts, mikey
I really don't see Bowles as a bad head coach. The Jets went 10-6 the year he had some talent available and 5-11 the two years he did not. That makes him about one game better than some of the guys we've had, including Herm Edwards and Eric Mangini. His coaching style isn't very visible, which can be a sore spot for fans who want to see some emotion out there, however not all good coaches are cheerleaders or ranters. Some very good coaches keep it mostly buttoned up on the sidelines and save their exceptional moments for the locker room and coaches office where they can be effective without publicly embarrassing people in the process.
Who's defending anyone? I'm defending against the ridiculous idea that you can draw any conclusions off of the QBs he's had to work with. Geno was supposed to start in year 1. Fitz was the backup until IK changed all of that. You think he, or any other HC would skip Fitz and play a rookie 4th round QB who doesn't even know how to line up under over a vet? Year 2, after a 10 win season and just missing the playoffs should he have started Petty or a rookie project QB? When Fitz shit the bed he went to Petty and he was god awful. Last year he had an open competition and bothe Petty and Hack showed they were nowhere close to being as good as McCown. But internet GM/HCs blame real HCs for trying to win. Big friggen deal, Reid put Mahomes in for garbage duty on the last day of the season. To me that's worse, he was anointed the 18 starter and gave him the last game, where no one was playing. The same Andy Reid who other than the first pick McNabb has drafted 6 or so FQBs, none of which developed. Hack wasn't ready by all accounts, what good is it to the team, the QB to set him up to fail? If Hack had shown he could handle the game he would have played. The staff thought Petty wasn't an option last year until forced to play, where he proved the the CS knew what they were talking about.
Fans don't know what they want. The same fans that complain Bowles isn't demonstrative enough on the sidelines, doesn't rant, throw things etc, hated it when we had Rex doing just that. They wanted Rex after the quiet Mangini, who wasn't exciting enough, like Bowles. Then Rex became a star and then the buffoon. Why can we have someone quiet like Belichick. It never ends. People want whatever it is we don't have. Fans don't get when a HC is trying to build a young team they sometimes have to play it ultra conservative, they want the player or players to head into a half or after a decent drive on a high note, not risk putting the team in a bad situation, have it backfire. They're building towards something. Fans think you just bore ahead aggressively. Risk = greatness.
