I just think rosen gets a bad rap personality wise. He's smart and mature which may rub some people the wrong way.
Allen is apparently even smarter than him, but he isn't a dick who rubs people the wrong way. So i don't buy intelligence as an excuse for his personality. I think the problem is that he is NOT mature, at least not yet. very millennial.... I'd rather a tough, humble, hard working farm boy mentality who loves football and works well with others.
he scored higher on the wonderlic but that doesn't mean a lot. I do understand the millennial thing for sure, but mayfield acts a lot more like that then rosen does IMO. Rosen seems to understand life much better then a 20 year old should. Allen is a good old country boy who grew up on a farm and a blue collar guy. I like that a lot. lots of good QBs come from that upbringing.
I was reading a recent article talking about it. I'll have to dig that up. Geno and Mayfield were close in completion percentage and INT%, but not much else. Mayfield is much better making plays with his feet and better out of the pocket. It's definitely not just the numbers, though. Mayfield finished with a Heisman Trophy, and tons of other honors and awards. It would take too long to list them all. He was one of the most decorated QBs in NCAA history. His teammates follow him like a cult. Mayfield is a born leader and has that confident attitude that you need in the NFL. Mayfield has many intangibles that Geno did not. I still prefer Rosen to Mayfield, but I don't think Geno is in the same ball park. I could be wrong, but if he falls to round 2, I'll eat my hat.
Sorry he wasnt a clear cut leader. And he sure as shit want thought of as good or better than Payton.
I suppose it's possible, but that means every coach since Weeb has been responsible for the Jets sucking at QB while the other teams in the division seem to do much better. Are the Jets unlucky with every QB or unlucky with every HC? How can you tell the difference?
Where do you come up with this nonsense? You've bought in, got it. Stop with the over the top nonsense. He's the 4th rated QB. Here's not the most decorated QB in history. OMG
I really like Mayfield, but I would have to agree. It’s a bit of a stretch to say he is one of the most decorated QBs in NCAA History.
I will say this about Mr. Mayfield...He IS a fantastic leader & does have infectious energy. He would not take any crap from Manish nor from Bellidouche. Additionally, if he DOES somehow duplicate his college production he will be special & will make big plays downfield which is really what I'm looking for. We are at square one offensively so there's no reason we couldn't cater a whole offense to his skill set. I still do prefer the other 3..but I recognize he has the legit chance to be a FQB. If the Jets were to follow the Sean peyton model w. Brees where they emphasized a a specific type of linemen to give Brees a clean window to step into his throws..perhaps something could be done likewise w. Mayfield to allow him to drift in the pocket.
As a sidenote, I really can wait until this draft gets here. Would rather discuss who the actual QB is rather than argue about who it might be.
You will see a lot of people hatin on the pick though. Some people, regardless of what they say, would rather be right on a message board than have a good QB.
I’m fine with people not liking the pick. I just hate the endless discussion of who it will be. I will root for any QB they draft though. I really don’t like the idea of Allen but will root tirelessly for him if they draft him.
I hear ya... It's a unique year because we all pretty much know they are taking a QB. That means that's all everyone is gonna talk about. It is pretty hammered down at this point, I usually like discussing all the options/positions here but this year it's only about QBs here
Hard to argue that he’s not one of the most decorated/best qbs ever in college - won a Heisman + set records that will be hard to break: His passer rating (203.8) is the best all-time, better than 2016 Baker Mayfield (196.4) and 2011 Russell Wilson (191.8). His yards per attempt (11.8) is the best all-time, better than 1999 Michael Vick (11.4) and 2016 Baker Mayfield (11.1). The guy was a great college qb, can’t take that away from him.
Case Keenum was one of the most decorated/best qbs ever in college and set records that will be hard to break: Most career pass completions: 1,546 Most career passing yards: 19,217 Most career passing touchdowns: 155 Most career games with 300+ passing yards: 39 Most games with 300+ passing yards in a single season: 14 (tied with Paul Smith) Most seasons passing for 5,000+ yards: 3 Most seasons passing for 4,000+ yards: 3 (tied with four others) Most career total yards: 20,114 Most career touchdowns responsible for: 178 He didn't even get drafted at all, much less third overall. I'm not saying we shouldn't draft Mayfield--just that college stats are the dumbest reason to do so.
And turned out to be pretty underrated considering he just posted a top 10 passer rating and made it to the NFC championship game. Not bad for an undrafted guy.
https://www.nfl.com/prospects/baker-mayfield?id=32462018-0002-5600-63bc-195cdc34bdb5 "Mayfield finished his career as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in college football history, topping it off by winning the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award, and the Big 12 Championship and a spot in the 2017 College Football Playoff. Mayfield completed 70.5 percent of his passes (285-of-404), throwing 43 touchdowns against just six interceptions (also rushing for 311 yards and five scores). The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year led the nation in pass efficiency by a large margin (setting a NCAA record that he himself set the previous year) and yards per pass attempt (11.8), and finished in the top five of pretty much every other passing category. He was an all-state pick from Texas, but his lack of size scared major college programs away. He began his college days in Lubbock, walking on at Texas Tech. In his one and only season there, Mayfield started seven of eight games played, winning Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year (218-of-340, 64.1 percent complete, 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns, nine interceptions). Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury decided to open up the starting competition, so Mayfield left campus to find a new home. He sat out the 2014 season as a transfer student to Oklahoma (eventually, Big 12 coaches approved a rule that gave Mayfield an extra year of eligibility to make up for the lost season, as he was a walk-on that never received a scholarship offer from Tech). Finally on the field as the No. 1 starter in 2015, Mayfield became a second-team Associated Press All-American, Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, and was a finalist for the Davey O'Brien, Manning, and Walter Camp Player of the Year Awards. He also won the Burlsworth Trophy as the nation's top player who began his career as a walk-on after completing 68.1 percent of his passes (269-of-395) for 3,700 yards and 36 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. In addition to winning Burlsworth Trophy again in 2016, Mayfield was first-team All-Big 12, finished third in Heisman voting, and was a finalist for the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Awards after leading the FBS in passing efficiency (196.4 rating, ranked first with 70.9 completion percentage, 3,965 yards, 40 touchdowns, eight interceptions). " I wasn't making it up. Geno isn't in the same league as him. Again, I'm only taking Mayfield if Rosen/Darnold are gone, but you are welcome to your opinion. PFF also gave Mayfield the highest grade out of the last 4 years of QBs. Geno wasn't a leader, he was a guy along for the ride. Dude got popped in the face for not settling a debt. Leadership is a quality that transcends stats. I'm not saying he's definitely going to make it, but comparing him to Geno is silly.
College stats - without context - is a dumb way to evaluate, but you can't simply ignore them entirely. If you think so, then try this - wipe out all statistical measurements for every QB (or player) and then tell us - without any numbers or measurements - who the best one is, and provide your factual basis for your conclusion. Raw numbers, by themselves can't tell you what you need to know, but even game tape can't tell you that, for the same reason: the level of competition and surrounding players is so diverse, it makes comparisons almost impossible. Still, that's all we have to go on. It sure makes for lots of arguments...I mean discussions.
