PFF just started doing the draft in 2016 so they have a short history. They did nothing collegewise prior to that. the 2016, and 2017 classes are too soon to judge and pretty much nobody missed or busted hard. everyone loved goff and wentz. most had mahomes ranke din the 1st round and sitll he's played 1 game you can't anoint him a FQB yet. and he's going to be in a great situaiton to suceed with andy ried who got the most out of any Qbs he's had and will run a good offense for him. plus they have a good D and good run game and good o-line. KC is a solid team for a QB to start their career with right now. Watson was more impressive then mahomes before blowing out his knee but some people were split on him. everyone knew we reached for hackenburg that wasn't any secret. Also i don't see may people here fawning over allen. I know i'm not. I'm just saying if it's him or mayfield i prefer allen. I'd much rather have rosen or darnold and maybe even jackson if it meant getting back more pics and trading back. The only way i'd want allen is if it's him or mayfield. Sadly the "pro mayfield" crowd tends to ignore facts and focuses on stats and made up stories
Reaching for Hackenberg is one thing, not many said he’s not a draftable prospect like PFF. They had Watson ahead of Mahomes. Anyway, not saying they are perfect but the points they bring up about Mayfield and Allen are how I see things... How they also mentioned about Barkley not being a good runner through the tackles and how he avoids contact was interesting. Chubb not being as highly rated on their board was also unique in that everyone has him ranked so high. I want to hear these sorts of different/non run of the mill opinions and rankings as that’s how the draft typically ends up unfolding and really what else is there to do right now...
Although I prefer Rosen & Darnold,no QB potentially going to a division rival scares me more than Allen. Keep trying to talk myself out of it..but I feel that strongly about how close he is to being deadly
it's called clickbait. people say crazy things to get attention. of 20 of 20 sites all say darnold is the best, only a few will get traffic. if one decided to say mayfield is the best, all the mayfield lovers will start linking the hell out of it. The sooner they do it, the sooner they get the SEO. You can get a google analytics account to see exactly how it works. and as you see, it works because you just said it yourself. It's no better then the "this household item could be killing you, click here to find out more" buzzfeed type nonsense
Boomer & Gio: Pro Football Focus' Steve Palazzolo, Sam Monson Talk NFL Draft Hard to call this clickbait when it doesn’t say anything about who or what they like in the draft. I had no idea what their thoughts were when I clicked... If you actually listen to the clip they make valid arguments for why they rate the prospects as they do. Even Boomer who loves Allen couldn’t argue against them. He says I know no one looks at this stuff as much as you guys.
I was listening to the segment live. I got the sense boomer was biting his tongue quite a bit. I respect what they do but every time I hear them I find myself disagreeing w much of what they say. They have their process in place & stick to it.But they say things that don’t always correlate w what you see & will try to further points by piling stats on top of stats.
Allen needs so much development that it’s hard for me to really fear a guy based on just potential. Most guys don’t reach it. Pennington worked with all these qbs and likes Allen the most but said he needs to sit 2-3 years to learn. In today’s NFL that’s probably not going to happen and who knows what/how he ends up. I don’t ever see him being a consistent thrower like a Brady, Rodgers, Manning... those are the guys you fear.
I'm th not exact opposite. I want Bills or Dolphins to get Allen because the only way Allen will succeed is in a perfect organization. Mayfield on the other hand I think can succeed anywhere.
Dan Orlovsky w/Peter King. Shares his thoughts on Qb’s. Pretty articulate dude who understands what it takes to play QB in today’s NFL. Has Darnold 1, Rosen 2, Baker 4. Shares thoughts on Allen at 1:07. If you’re a Allen fan and someone who has analyzed the film, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on what he has to say: https://dfkfj8j276wwv.cloudfront.net/episodes/57ff7f93-1714-4ba6-a485-7d9761fb9b6c/ce6d056e00b3d022ca8ad0b0c6abacfebc455927501bfca2307eeb90dd241c07fb09434ecac27e98e27df0e31ebac4eab9170139033a98dc0cde69727b3f0070/2018 04 04 MMQB with Peter King.mp3
PFF outright already invalidated their stuff saying their process is new and they have no track record of it being good or working. in other words they are "trying to figure it out" currently. If you want to listen to an"expert" pick one with a proven track record over the past 5-6 years it'll take some time though because it doens't exist.
And that’s where we disagree.I don’t think he’s far off at all.He doesn’t need drastic development. He needs to clean up the top of his drop backs, stop rushing his release & put alittle more touch on his throws.I have a hard time understanding where this “2-3 year” timetable comes from w Allen. Is it Hack phobia?Im starting to wonder. If he’s not ready to roll after a year there are major issues not present on his tape.
I agree. I think he needs a year (like Mahomes) but should be good to go year 2. He will obviously still be learning once he starts but I just don't think a prospect gets three years these days unless he is sitting behind a franchise guy. I also think Allen's flaws are a little overblown. Give him a clean pocket and a little time to set up and his footwork and throwing mechanics look pretty good to me. Right now he is not yet consistent but when he's right you see plenty of accurate throws, including throws requiring touch. My questions have more to do with pocket presence, full field reads, not bailing early and decision making. If he can deal with all that he will be good, very good.
These (the bold) are not trivial things to fix, if they even can be. Certainly they can be improved upon, but how much, and how much do they need to be? Allen looks like a HOF'er in shorts and no opposition, but his game breaks down under pressure, and while that can be said of every QB, in his case it seems more pronounced, and he wasn't facing the highest level of college competition, let alone pros. Not as bad as Hackenberg, but he's not pro-ready without a lot of work IMO.
Yeah I hear you. I don't want to make excuses for him but with respect to bailing early when under pressure it looked to me like his O-line was often in jail break mode. Also he was running a pro offence that relies on timing and precision much more than does a typical college offence. And its not just the QB. Unless everyone is doing his job chances are things are more likely to break down. How much was on him is not always easy to tell. He looked good against superior talent in the Senior Bowl game. But don't get me wrong, he is not at the level Carson Wentz was at, not nearly, but he's only got a couple of years under his belt, and his physical skills are a notch above Wentz. If whoever gets him can harness that big horse's talent they will be richly rewarded.
Yes, he did get pressure often, although his OL was not as bad as is made to seem here by some. Even when he did get time he misfired, and sometimes bailed too quickly, although as you said, he might've gotten gun shy from so many previous breakdowns in protection. And I also agree that some bad plays might've been because somebody else blew their assignment, BUT...clearly he has made a lot of mistakes, and even if some of that is due to him running a "pro style" offense, does anyone think the offense he'll have to run in the NFL isn't at least as complex as Wyoming's? As for looking better against "superior" talent in the Senior Bowl, you mean the 1st time or the second? I assume the second, because he looked lousy on his first session. But even at that, he wasn't facing complicated defenses and defenses that had played together as a unit so that has to be taken into consideration. When all is said and done, what people who like Allen seem to come down to is: He's a monster physical talent with potential that should outweigh his actual performance. I disagree with that approach. I think Parcell's Rule applies in ALL cases, regardless of sport or level of competition: "You are what your record says you are".
Re the Senior Bowl yeah for sure I meant the second time. But that is sort of my point. His first snaps were mediocre no doubt, but he agitated to go back in presumably because he was confident that he could do better. If he had stunk it up again it would have been a very bad look. Instead he pretty much lit it up with some big time throws. That over the shoulder pass he dropped in the bucket had nothing to do with arm strength, more like arm talent - a thing of beauty requiring a lot of touch and precision - something his detractors claim he does not have. He does that sort of thing fairly frequently so its not just an accident. The problem of course is that he also does the opposite a fair amount too. He's a risky pick and he will be greatly advantaged if he goes to the right team - he needs to sit behind a veteran starter and get the benefit of a good QB coach. I would certainly not take him at #3. If he is there Rosen would be my choice.
