Josh Allen is another combine hero, but when you watch his tape he looks like a project qb. Never fall in love with a qb at the combine and/or his pro day, when you didn't love him watching his game tapes. Betting on Allen with the No. 3 overall pick is a dumb bet. Smart money is on Rosen at No. 3. Anyone wanting the Jets to draft Allen will be just as disappointed as the stans who wanted Kirk Cousins.
He’s been a consensus top 10 pick within this draft class for 2 years.Who said anything about drafting him based off his pro day or combine?
You are missing the point. Allen NEVER completed more than 56.2% in a college season, in spite of being a junior. I am concerned about not having any good NFL QBs in recent history who never were able to complete over 56% by junior season or earlier. Stafford had 61% season as a junior. I just didn't see anyone make that jump from 56% in last season in NCAA to being a top notch NFL QB. Will Allen be the first one to do it? Maybe. But it sure trumps your argument to the garbage that poor completion stats don't matter. As far as Mayfield, I know short size is a big obstacle, but at least there are a few starting QBs today in NFL who are short (Wilson, Taylor, Brees). Heck, even Rogers, Dalton, and Hoyer are only an inch taller. And Mayfield had a College career better than any of the above. Yet there are NO good QBs at all that I am aware of not just as starters today, but that came out of College this century that had 56% as the best year in College. And Allen had that as a junior. Odds of success are terrible here, and Jets cannot afford to take that chance with a rare #3 pick.
Combine hero? He's been the third ranked QB for 2 years now. Though he did have a great combine. And a better pro day
No, you're missing the point. Completion percentage isn't the end all. To you it is, to most it isn't. It's why he's ranked higher than Mayfield by most. Has been for some time. That's it. You do what most of the Mayfield fan boys do. Rarely talk about Mayfield and just complain about Allen. Fine, done
Bill Parcells prefers Allen, too. I will continue to believe Allen goes 1 to Cleveland on April 26 until I hear otherwise from Adam Schefter or Roger Goodell at roughly 8:15pm on April 26.
That's it. I give up. As a person who prefers Mayfield over Darnold/Rosen/Allen combo I am officially done with Mayfield. Parcells prefers Allen? Phil Simms prefers Allen? Rex Ryan prefers Allen, Mike Mayock has Allen #2, Mel Kiper has Allen #1. Our own quarterback guru @legler82 prefers Allen. I am done. I decided to cheer Allen if he is the Jets pick. Wow!!!! P.S: I still want Mayfield but I won't be depressed if the pick is Allen. Lol.
The Tuna is dead to me, so I could care less what his opinion is. Last year I wanted Deshaun Watson, we passed on him, then he lit the league up. This year I want Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen, and I'm hearing/reading Josh Allen to the Jets talk. If we pass on Rosen or Darnold for Josh Allen after trading all our 2nd round draft picks this year and next to move up 3 spots in round 1, then I will have a real hard time cheering that selection. If it's a repeat of last year, and the qb I wanted lights the league up, while our pick shits the bed, then I'm done until I read Mac is fired.
Where did you see this? I'd be interested in reading Parcells take as I had imagined Darnold would be more his speed. I definitely couldn't see Mayfield being a Parcells guy. Parcells was anti celebrity QB.
Not Parcells opinion, but: https://www.ndtscouting.com/marino-applying-bill-parcells-rules-drafting-qb-2018-class/
I've been trying to get to the point where I'll be ok with Allen. I'll surely cheer for whom ever we draft, but of the 4 his game film is the least impressive to me. He does have to tools to be elite, but his ball placement often leaves me scratching my head and his touch throws need a lot of work. No matter what its going to be an exciting first round to be a Jets fan.
Do you have the link for that? I know Parcells like seniors, but he was also pretty adamant about 60% completion and winning 60% of games played, which Allen has not done. https://www.ndtscouting.com/marino-applying-bill-parcells-rules-drafting-qb-2018-class/
Here is Bill's Parcells 11 QB commandments: https://billyliggett.wordpress.com/2007/10/09/bill-parcells-11-quarterback-commandments/ (None of these are specific to this class, in fact they were from Parcells to Tony Romo)
If we actually draft Allen, it is because the team is convinced beyond a reasonable doubt it can mold what he is good at and minimize what he is at weak at and turn him into a monster of a QB. That prospect scares me in the sense that we have the third pick, not the first. Hue Jackson himself is a guy who built his reputation on what he was able to accomplish with Joe Flacco. Allen has some similarities to Flacco and Jackson should know what it is like to coach that sort of skill set. If Jackson doesn't think he can get that sort of success out of Allen, then why should we believe the Jets will do better with Allen? If the Browns DO actually draft Allen, then it doesn't matter for the Jets because we never had a chance to begin with. The point is, if two teams pass this guy up, then the Jets take him, the Jets are declaring a confidence in being able to work with him where the others aren't. The Jets have yet to show they can do this successfully. Maybe Bates is the guy who will change that. Hopefully he is. I'm not holding my breath.
I have never have wanted any of the Jets draft picks past or present to fail. I would support whoever they pick, but I will not be excited about drafting Josh Allen, especially after trading up. Bottom line, as long as the qb our beloved Jets pick is a great selection I am going to be happy in the long run. I'm just so used to us picking the wrong guy though...picking Allen feels so SOJ.
Well said, hard to trust the Jets to make this evaluation. If Bates has a large say then I doubt Allen is the guy they will target. The primary attribute a qb needs for a West Coast offense is accuracy. I think it will be either Rosen / Mayfield who they target.
https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/04/01/josh-rosen-jim-mora-odell-beckham-trade-draft-mmqb-peter-king FOD (Friend of Dorsey) thinks Browns will go Allen-Saquon at 1 and 4. What would an April MMQB be without another draft rumor?! This friend of Cleveland GM John Dorsey believes he’ll go Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen over Sam Darnold with the first overall pick, keep the fourth pick, and take Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. “I would be surprised if he traded down,” FOD told me. “This would be his chance to take his two offensive cornerstones for the next eight or 10 years.” The most interesting thing there? That FOD thinks Dorsey will not trade. I think that’s great. Cleveland’s been very good at trading and stockpiling, and not very good at drafting, in the last few years. I hope Dorsey’s more about the (relatively) sure things instead of Cleveland leading the league in draft picks.
Allen going 1 would be fantastic for the Jets. Darnold likely goes 2 then and the Jets get either Rosen or Mayfield.
