We've carried 4 QBs before. If he genuinely is improving, and that should be assessed at TC, then I've no problem with keeping him on at the expense of some JAG wide receiver or Bridgewater's knee. We shouldn't be keeping him on to make Macc look good. Out of good faith, Petty should be let go as soon as possible.

I think after the draft is when we'll see Petty get axed. I believe they'll try to trade him during Day 3 of the draft (Saturday, Rounds 4-7) for a pick and will likely be unable to do so, leading to his release in the coming week or two after the draft.

As for Hackenberg, I just have a feeling that he's in training camp once again this summer, "insurance" if Bridgewater's leg falls apart and we want someone with some understanding of the offense to be QB 2 or 3, depending on the progression of the rookie. I don't think Maccagnan is quite ready to give up on him, even though he knows he must take Darnold, Rosen, Allen or Mayfield at 3.

There's no point in cutting him now.
The guy hasn't been on the field yet, so he's still eligible for the practice squad. (unless O'Brien wants to bring him in)

Petty should be given his hall pass. "Thanks for your services.... maybe someone else will give you a shot"

It is cruel and unusual punishment keeping him around. I'm no Hackenberg fan but keeping him around after resigning McCown, bringing in Bridgewater and making the big trade up to #3 for said 3rd QB. I bet Macc is scared Bellicheck would grab him up and coach him up and punish the Jets for another 12 years.

If we draft a QB at 3 as expected I fully expect both Petty and Hack to be cut, assuming Bridgewater makes the team.

If for some reason we don't draft a QB I expect Petty to get the boot and we keep Hack. Just a guess though.

Hack is still young and under contract, so no reason to kick him to the curb just yet. If he shows nothing in the preseason or doesn’t even get an opportunity then yes, it’s probably time to move on.
I’m scared of that, too. You know he’ll be snapped up by a division rival if for no other reason then to get some info. What kind of nightmare would it be (for Jets fans) if he managed to become the man somewhere else?

Keep him through TC and evaluate him. I don’t think he’d stick to the PS long before being signed elsewhere, but it’ll be worth a shot. Kids only 23.

I view McCown as insurance for Bridgewater. If the real TB is able to play near his pre-injury level then Macc tries to trade McCown to a QB needy team during TC. I'm not saying he will get much if anything, but maybe he can get a 7th rounder to unload the salary. To another team, a team with playoffs on the mind, the $5M salary for a veteran QB could be tempting (Jets already ate the $5M signing bonus).

The Jets then start TB (hopefully all season) and ride him to a compensatory pick next year assuming the #3 pick is ready to start. If not, resign TB. Let Hack ride #3 for another year.

  8. I send Hack to the PS.You can’t reach on a QB in round 2 & then never play the kid w no other viable option on the roster.Neither McCown or TB can be depended on long term.Hack is still developing & in a worse case scenario he knows the system.

He may look like complete garbage in practice there is stilll no reason Bowles couldn’t have played the kid in the 2nd half of weeks 16-17. We wouldn’t even be having this discussion if he did.

Hackenburg has quickly spawned into our own version of Jimmy Claussen.Hopefully we land our very own Cam Newton to put the angst to rest

Is Bates gonna run the same system Morton did? Even if so, Hack never played in that system either so I'm not sure just how comfortable Hack would be in that situation. If Bates is bringing in his own system, Hack will have to start over yet again. Perhaps not from scratch, but still starting over with nomenclature, terminology and such. Either way, if McCown and Bridgewater both go down, we're fckd. I can see Bowles playing Hack before the new rookie unless the rookie lights it up in TC.

Hack should not be cut now. He's young, healthy, and has 2 more seasons at dirt cheap QB money. You want young & dirt cheap as QB #3. Are we to believe he's any worse than the late round QB projects many teams carry on their rosters. If Bridgewater proves healthy & effective in the pre-season, then perhaps you can cut Hack. If Bridgewater isn't worth the expense of keeping him on board, cut him & roll with old man Josh, rookie Josh & Hack.

I believe Hack will get until the end of this year's training camp to show something. I just don't see how he can get enough reps reps with Teddy and a rookie competing.

Speaking of Hackenberg, I personally feel and believe that this QB class has been overrated and hyped up to a T dating back to before the season began. I find it hard to believe that 3 QB's will be deserving of the #3 overall pick.

Darnold, to me; is the one can't miss QB prospect.,

But Josh Rosen? Yes, I do agree; all the arm talent and smarts in the world. But he scares me. Multiple Head Concussion injuries with trauma to his young brain. Could be one or two NFL head shots away from early retirement. Honestly? Pass.

With that said I do feel that both Darnold and Rosen will go 1-2.

Which means that S.Barkley will be the best overall player come pick #3. And imo is THE PRIZE of this draft class. And IMO the #1 prospect coming into this draft.

If Darnold and Rosen are gone 1-2 that's the beauty of trading up to #3. The best player in Barkley will fall to us @ 3rd overall. And would not have been there 6th overall. You've gotta take him.

    My question is this.

If Darnold and Rosen are selected 1-2?

Why on earth would you draft the 3rd or 4th QB options (Mayfield/Allen) when the BEST PLAYER WITHIN THE DRAFT along with a CAN NOT MISS BLUE CHIP PROSPECT is staring your franchise right in the face in S.Barkley?

Franchise QB starved or not: You don't reach for the 3rd or 4th best QB option when a player who's DESERVING of the 1st OVERALL DRAFT PICK is there for the steal @ 3rd overall.

    McCown-Bridgewater-Hackenberg.
    Barkley.

Go for the QB swing another time.

when was the last time the Super Bowl winner featured the best RB in the game...?
when was the last time 'defense wins championships' actually was true in football?

Rams don't sniff the playoffs without Gurley.
Jags don't sniff the playoffs without Fournette.
Pittsburgh would not be the same without a current L.Bell.

    Etc. Etc.

Dallas doesn't win squat without Smith. One of the greatest dynasty's of all-time.

And Barkley is not "just a HB". He's an offensive game changer and will dominate both rushing and receiving out of the backfield. There's a reason why CLE could consider drafting this freak of nature 1st overall.

These QB's are being overrated and over hyped. Franchise QB or no Franchise QB you DO NOT take the 3rd or 4th best QB option when the BEST PLAYER WITHIN THE ENTIRE DRAFT is there for the taking,

If Darnold and Rosen go 1-2 Barkley is a lock to change our franchise and OFFENSIVE CULTURE.

Cowboys dynasty was pre-salary cap era...apples to oranges... and they were stacked EVERYWHERE. The more common belief is that almost any competent RB could have put up the #s Emmit did behind that line, NOT that Emmit was the main cog of that team.

I love Barkley as a player, no argument there... but I also loved Barry Sanders.........

you may THINK they are being overhyped... I, like most others I would assume, really dont know. And if 3 of them have a chance of being a FQB (which Mac apprarently believes judging by the trade) then you have to select 1, even if it is #3 on your board. The QB is exponentially more important to your offense than any other position, including RB.

Look at this way...if all current NFL players were put in a draft for the 2018 season (no 2019 season, no cap, etc) do you really believe the draft would look much different than this?

    1 - Brady
    2 - Rogers
    3 - Brees
    4 - Big Ben
    5 -
    6 -

see where this goes...? all teams would gladly pass on the #1 RB, CB, WR, LT, etc etc...for the #3,#4, #5.... QB... They are THAT MUCH MORE IMPORTANT.

The system and terminology should be very similar . Both Bates and McCown had alot of input into Morton's playbook last year , so Hack will be familiar with the offense.
It would not be too much of a surprise to see both go down, if both make the roster, and I agree. Bowles would likely start Hack over the rookie....

The bolded does not make sense. If a player succeeds elsewhere after failing here it's not his being drafted that was the problem, it was his coaching while here.

I agree with you that if a player who is a bust with the Jets becomes a star elsewhere, it reflects poorly on Bowles et al. However, the quote suggests that Maccagnan holds onto non-productive players out of blind fear that they might blossom elsewhere, not because he thinks Bowles et al. has failed to develop that player. To me, that's a pretty big difference. You want a GM who will cut bait with a bust, not one who will hold onto a bust just to avoid admitting that he made a mistake.
