Agree some guys have the innate ability, feel and understanding how to play qb. Mayfield is one of these guys. I like Rosen too, but Mayfield has a better arm and is more athletic and accurate under pressure. This is an interesting draft because besides Darnold, there is no consensus on the next guy.
He was 31st in the number of NFL throws he was asked to make. That just means that in the offense in which he played, he wasn't asked to make NFL throws as often as players in other systems. Yet in spite of that, he was the 10th best at making those throws (completions), and threw more TD passes than anyone. The natural progression is that if he had been asked to make those kinds of throws more often, he would have gotten even better at them, since he got better at everything else he did over his collegiate career. Those stats looked only at his last two seasons, which are the most important. What I read said that more NFL teams are starting to look at those metrics precisely because there have been so many misses on QBs. It isn't stats or metrics just for their sake. They're trying to understand players better, why some have been more successful. I think it's very valid looking at completion percentages when a QB is pressured, and how he plays on 3rd and 4th downs, and some of the other things they're measuring. Did you ignore the fact that in terms of accuracy (ball placement, catchability of passes, etc.), that Mayfield is the best? How about the fact that he is the #1 QB in passer rating when under pressure (which considering our OL will be very important for whomever the Jets draft)? He's not just a little better than the other top 6 QBs, either. He blows them away!
That is a great article on Mayfield. I like him and was fine with the Jets drafting him. I just think he likely would have been there at #6. So to go up to #3 and give up what they did, I feel it was for Darnold, most likely Rosen, or Allen. That is what I meant by distant 4th. Not his ability. If they pick him with Rosen and Allen still on the board, I would be shocked for a second, but then fully on board with Broadway Baker!
I'm with you on this one. I'm not disputing Mayfield ability, I just don't see our leadership having Mayfield ranked closely to the rest. If so I truly believe Mac would have stayed put at six with four options. Who knows. I will tell you this. If it's Rosen, and particularly after reading the article on his injury assessment of durability, we better figure out a way to protect our QB far better than the current OL is projected to be. I was really expecting more action on beefing up the OL in free agency in any case. I'm afraid once Darnold goes at #1, Mac will go Allen, Rosen in that order. The Giants move is the wild card.
I'm sure that they probably did trade up more for Rosen or Darnold, but I think that would have been a mistake. IMO if they included Allen in their top 3 instead of Mayfield, then that would explain a LOT about Mac's bad personnel decisions, poor drafts, etc.
Sadly, I think you're probably right about Mac preferring Rosen, Darnold, and Allen, but maybe not. Hopefully, he has more sense than that! I'm also very disappointed in the lack of moves to improve our OL. His plan had better be to let the rookie sit this season and start McCown/Teddy; otherwise, their prized FQB prospect might get killed.
The under pressure rating is also fluff, it took into consideration 91 attempts out of 3 years of play and by their own definition in the report, has nothing to do with OL giving up pressure, it has to do with the QB holding on to the ball too long. The report also says Mayfield will not be good in a timing based offense, is that what the jets are going to use? I'm not sure what their offense is going to be other than zone blocking. This is why I don't like analytics, they take very small samples of a very large picture put it into a database and provide a positive report for specific players. I would love to see the reports that show how wrong they are about their analytics research on players.
Red, I'm disappointed in your responses. I've always thought that you were an open-minded individual, but with regards to Mayfield you're revealing yourself to be very biased and closed-minded. I don't know what's up, but you're either only half-heartedly skimming the article and not really focusing, or your reading comprehension today is not up to snuff, but that's not what the article says. Here's what it actually says: The last paragraph is something the "experts" have said that Mayfield needs to work on. While true, it should be hardly unexpected for a player who is great at extending plays and creating something out of nothing. He's probably gonna take more sacks trying to extend plays in the NFL, than he otherwise would. This is something the team that drafts him will either have to accept or work with him on to change. His team could probably do with a little less improvisatory play and be more assured of keeping him healthy and on the field. He can adjust and learn to just throw the ball away more or settle for a lesser play. These statistics are NOT fluff. That's just ridiculous. They give a clearer picture of how QBs perform under pressure, and I want the QB on the Jets who is the best under pressure and thrives, rather than wilts or just survives. I'm sorry that you can't see that.
NC, we will have to agree to disagree my friend. I respect others opinion to look at analytics and use them personally I don't believe in them. I have read all of the information and based on the chart that measures pressures, Mason Rudolph and Luke Falk are better than the other qbs that are being considered as top 3 picks. Are we going to give them a higher draft grade because of the chart? Or are we simply using it to make a case for Mayfield? I can see your perspective on this and I respect it, but I don't like Mayfield myself and hope Jets don't draft him, as I said before though. If they do, I will root for him.
This is not an original thought, but we will be picking either Allen or Mayfield. Browns take darnold and giants or trade up will take rosen.
People are going to hate this, but I believe mayfield + Allen will be selected ahead of Rosen - Rosen is a weird dude. Go watch some interviews/videos + his coaches half hearted endorsement (not sure he will put the work in + not always seen as coachable as he is a typical millennial). With his concussion/injury history also in the fold, of all the qb’s he might be the one who slips. Hard to imagine he is interviewing well... The question will be, is it worth taking the most talented passer even though he’s the least likeable + coachable... I’m saying he drops...
I hope you're right, and he drops...to #3. The interviews I've seen and heard reported all were very positive, and in fact many expressed surprise at how articulate and open he seemed. If teams bypass him for this "knock" they're cutting off their nose to spite their face. The concussion/injury issue is a concern, but he's smart enough that if he felt he was at risk for serious injury he wouldn't play football any more...it's not like he doesn't have any other options. I'm still hoping they take Rosen, but have him and Mayfield neck and neck otherwise.
