At the beginning I was all about Rosen, then I drifted into Mayfield and supporting him, but now I'm firmly back at Rosen. He HAS to be the choice at 3. Passing on him would be a huge mistake.
yeah jets and giants were both there and 10 other teams. he's headed to a developmental league i never heard of. wasn't CFL
Watched the Josh Allen pro day. Keep in mind, I have no bias as I'm not particularly sold on any of these QBs to be honest. I just watched and and made note of what stuck out as I did with Darnold. What I liked: Duhhhh....he has a gun. I don't like that Mayock keeps acting like it's something we've never seen before (I've seen Vick in HS, college and the pros) but I digress. This kid has a cannon. He chucks it effortlessly down field. His deep ball doesn't hang waiting for defenders to pick it (which I kinda saw in Darnold's pro day at times). Improved footwork. I can tell he identified his flaws and put in the work to correct it. Didn't see much crossing of the feet, moved around "the pocket" with ease, solid base etc. Relaxation. I think of anything, this is the most impressive thing about this kid. He knows he has a big arm. He knows these settings are tailor made for it. He didn't go out and try to overdo it. He didn't put new rims on a Rolls Royce just because he could. Every throw looked effortless. What I didn't like: No touch or variation. Every throw, even at the combine, seemed to be a fast ball. Where's the anticipation? Where's the finesse? I'm no guru but I certainly didn't see it. The few times he did it, you could tell he made a conscious effort to. It didn't seem instinctual. I'm a big boxing fan. The outs, the redzone passes...all lasers on a straight line. I wanna see a guy who throws that back endzone pass high to where either the WR catches it or sails out of bounds. I wanna see a guy who thows the out down and away sometimes to avoid CBs jumping routes (like Asante Samuels used to). In boxing, you need to know how to vary your punch speed or good boxers will easily slip it. In baseball you can't throw 100 down the middle every time. Show me that throw that lobs just over a defender's hand. Hard to show in a pro day, but still. Roll outs were mechanical. As with Lamar Jackson's footwork at the combine, a lot of Allen's "improvements" weren't at realistic speed. So on one hand, I acknowledge and applaud the improvement, I also don't like that it was done at 30% speed. I'm a big basketball fan. I don't like to see when guys try to improve their jumpshot shooting slow set shots. Practice at game speed. To make the football analogy, I hate to see WR at the combine trot through the gauntlet drill. Darnold looked like he was bursting out of the pocket on roll outs. Allen was methodical and plotting. All in all, with the right coaching, I think he could be molded into a really good QB. The physical tools are there. It's just about how patient are you going to be waiting for him to develop. He could be a Hackenburg like project although I think he's further along in the process. Are we willing to go through that? I don't know if I am. Not when we spent 3 seconds on him.
Top QBs in this draft (for playing next year): 1a. Darnold 1b. Rosen 1c. Mayfield 2. M. White 3. K. Lauletta 4. J. Allen I assume CLE will draft Josh Allen at the end of the day. I think in a few years, kid could be the best of the bunch, or the worst. But HUE will love that arm and Tyrod gives him the time to develop him. No way Hue is playing a rookie anyway with his job on the line. NYG will make a decision Barkley / Nelson / Chubb / Darnold. If I had to bet, I'd say Barkley, then Chubb. Then I bet the Jets will take Rosen. Mayfield will wind up on Buffalo or Miami and kick our ass for the next decade. Rosen will turn out to be a very solid qb (a la Kenny O'b), but just not enough. Just a prediction.
It IS repairable, but I think it will take a LOT of reps, and that's what I think Jets fans will object to. It's much harder to correct than footwork...it has to do with brain processing speed - and NO, I'm not implying that Allen is slow-witted! - but I suspect that he's relied on his "gun" so much to make up for poor timing that it's become a crutch and he's going to have to first unlearn this and then learn the right way. It's not a slam dunk that he can do, especially with all the pressure for him to be the "savior". Typically unlearning something and then re-learning it looks very ugly at first and can even look like he's "broken" - I suspect this is what happened to Hack. All that said, I'm not expert, and could be completely wrong, but I have heard some of the "experts" echoing this concern. If we get him I really hope I'm wrong.
Maybe Petty and Hack can get a ride with Manziel to Calgary. Just make sure Manziel isn't drinking while he's driving and its all good..
Rosen Mayfield Darnold in that order. FWIW I would've been okay with Lamar Jackson had we traded back into the teens vs trading up to 3. Want nothing to do with Josh Allen.
Good write up. I agree with most of it, except rolling out. Allen rolls out and throws on the run very naturally, and it shows very well on tape. It's one of his pros. If you want to see a touch throw for a TD which lobs just over a defenders hand, look at the Senior Bowl. I want to see more of that, as I agree he does tend to rely on fast balls. I agree he is better served sitting for a year, or most of it, behind a guy like McCown or Eli. Hack is not even near his stratosphere of development, and had fundamental mechanical issues across the board which Allen does not have. I wouldn't sit him longer than a year unless McCown or Bridgewater were somehow lighting it up.
Red, the bolded statement is not accurate. Please check out this article: https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/03/22/baker-mayfield-advance-analytics-nfl-draft-oklahoma-pff This is the pertinent quote to this specific point, but there's more in the article that speaks to Mayfield's ability. and
You're a reasonable guy. Read this article and tell me that you still think that Mayfield is a distant 4th and should not be an option for the Jets. https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/03/22/baker-mayfield-advance-analytics-nfl-draft-oklahoma-pff
Ok so it was Darrel Bevell who said he has not been asked to make NFL throws. However when they do look at the NFL throws he comes out 31st in FBS, then they throw more number and say he has 22 TDs and 10th in completions over the last two seasons. So what happened to his 3rd season? He has played more than 2 seasons as a starter? Personally I don't believe in the so called metrics that are being used to confuse the process even more, great QBs of the past were selected without, AIQ, IPR...etc Maybe that why so many teams are missing in FQB selection? Because they should be looking at a simple list of what can he do and what can't he do as far as throws. Dan Fouts, Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Willie, Montana, the HC who scouted these guys looked at their tape, saw accuracy, quick releases, good arms, mental ability to transition to next level, sometimes old fashioned works well, stick to what works. That's how teams get into trouble, they try to reinvent the wheel when they don't have to. Even the paragraph you quoted says it, some team will fall in love with him based on any of the advanced Metrics that are used to analyze QBs, then it goes on to the bolder part. I believe that's how teams fail to select their FQBs when they are now too dependent on fluff. However if the jets select him, obviously I'm going to root for him.
Mayfield keeps checking off boxes - latest rumor is that he scored the highest wonderlic. This is also an interesting piece on analytics by si: https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/03/22/baker-mayfield-advance-analytics-nfl-draft-oklahoma-pff Not sure why people still doubt this kid. As more and more information gets leaked, we may fully understand why the Jets moved to 3.
Mayfield just looks like the sharpest and most on point when it comes to accuracy Its hard to explain but when you watch it you can see it...Pennington had it for us. Instincts and anticipation to hit the receiver exactly where you want to and it just comes natural to certain guys We’d be dumb to pass him up
