Hey... he may not work out... as any of these players might not. But I don't think Hack has anything to do with Josh Allen. I don't think he's a "gamble" in that sense. I also don't think he's some random dude that is "just big and athletic" You bring this guy along the right way and he's got the legit potential to be fantastic. And I think there are a lot of smart NFL people that do this for a living that think he's a likely future star player. I'm not sure there were many of those folks at all that confidently thought that about Hack. And if they did there were a lot of "maybies, potentiallies, and ifs" mixed in there.
Stats have some meaning. Consistency, improving every year, outperforming other QBs in just about every department has meaning. Does that mean he will be a great NFL QB? Not necessarily. Size for instance may become a factor. But certainly not because you did not like his film and proclaimed it to be not showing NFL QB qualities.
If I had to. I want Mayfield, but will be happy with any of the top 4, and will root like crazy for him.
I agree with you that learning the WCO will not be a problem for Mayfield, but what TwoHeadedMonster is referring to is that there is a bias among many fans and in some in the NFL against spread QBs. It exists, unfortunately, primarily due to QBs who came out of Texas Tech and threw for thousands of yards but had weak popgun arms and only so-so accuracy. As more and more colleges start using spread offenses, more and more QBs are going to be coming out of a spread system, and the fans and those in the NFL who have that bias are going to have to get over it, get left behind, or start running the single wing offense and never pass the ball.
Most strong draft classes stack up this way. That doesn't mean the QB's are being overrated by any means. The only time QB's are usually at the very top is when other positional groups are much weaker. Additionally QB is a position which has significant inflated value b.c the limited supply & massive demand the position dictates. It's at a point where any top 30 ranked QB is almost certain to go top 20 more often top 10. 2 in the top 10 & 5 in top 22 is pretty darn good. Let's be fair Barkely, Chubb & Fitzpatrick are all exceptional level talents for their position. But only Chubb plays an impact position & It's on D in a scoring league.Nelson is overrated by at least 6 spots.
It would be just like the hidebound Giants to go strictly with BPA and ignore the QB position. If they do take Barkley, I hope they go 30 years before they find another FQB. It would serve them right. I want them to take Rosen or Allen, however, so Mac won't be tempted to take that QB, and so Buffalo or Miami won't get one of the top QBs. I want the Jets to take Mayfield.
Thanks for the explanation. Just found this factual tidbit about Baker: "Mayfield finished his career as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in college football history, topping it off by winning the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award, and the Big 12 Championship and a spot in the 2017 College Football Playoff. Mayfield completed 70.5 percent of his passes (285-of-404), throwing 43 touchdowns against just six interceptions (also rushing for 311 yards and five scores). The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year led the nation in pass efficiency by a large margin (setting a NCAA record that he himself set the previous year) and yards per pass attempt (11.8), and finished in the top five of pretty much every other passing category. Completed 67 percent when on the move." There are too many accolades to list. Even if percentages are aided by spread system, horizontal throws, etc, the College accomplishments are unparalleled and cannot be discounted. Yes, MANY good College QBs failed in NFL, but Baker's accomplishments are on the next level of just about every other good College QB. I know 3d pick is a reach for him, but at the end of the day we just need a good QB, and I think Baker's body of work so far suggest that he has a good chance of fitting the bill, in spite of his smaller 6-1 frame.
If this is the case then the Giants have fallen quite a bit in terms of scouting and identifying quality talent. And thank god for us that have Could all be misdirection but it sure is encouraging to see.
From a Giants perspective if they made a trade with the Bills, and ended up with say Calvin Ridley at #12, Will Hernandez at #21 and a 2nd round RB wouldn't that blow taking Saquon Barkley out of the water? Assuming health from Eli and Beckham I'd almost think that would make them Super Bowl hopefuls for the coming season. I think they should trade down if able.
I'm starting to believe that more and more. It's about them loading up while the getting is good. Add Barkely to Eli, and Beckham, the TE , adding Solder. I believe it, easily. They may like Webb too. Seems to me they have too much to start breaking it up.
Trading down and getting such a haul as you suggest would definitely be better than taking Barkley alone. I'm not certain if it would make them SB hopefuls, but it would certainly help them going forward. The major problem would be, however, that assuming the D is pretty good, adding those guys would definitely have them drafting in the teens or 20s every year, and they'd have no shot at trading up for and getting one of the top QB prospects. They would probably go 8-8 or 9-7, maybe even 10-6 every year for the next 5-7 years, but would never have a realistic chance of getting to or winning a SB because they didn't have a very good QB, and that is the name of the game in the NFL these days.
Don't read too much into anything you read between now and the draft. It's a slow news period and writers have to get clicks somehow. Only news to watch is who gets arrested between now and draft day so hopefully they fall to the 3rd or 4th round. Lol
This class will be great, 3 of the top 4 QBs will be HOFs, 1 will bust. Do I have to tell you who selects the bust? Lol
Solder is good no doubt about it but they're also getting him at 30 and not 26-27. If he starts to decline they are SOL. The Giants are nowhere near Philly or Dallas level. They are in for some dark days unless Webb really turns out great. And maybe he will who knows.
Yeah, I mean Solder is a short term fix. More for Eli. Not a guy you're signing for the long term and your new #2 pick QB. I'm starting to believe Barkley is a bonafide possibility.
The Giants are miles away from being anything close to a SB contender. They will be 3rd in that division at best the next 3 years.
