Read your statement again.... then mine..... I didnt even want McCown back, but Does Mac has ESP to know that Bridgewater would definitely agree to come to the JETS? T Shouldnt be that hard to comprehend.
The reason is the worry about Bridgewater's knee..if he can't play or reinjures it they still need somebody who can start.
Best case scenario with Bridgewater specifically is he does enough to actually warrant getting a franchise tag. That is how the Jets would trade him for any value and profit from the one year rental.
I don't really see it as a waste. If it was a multi-year deal it would be a waste but as it stands, it is not. To this day McCown is the only guy on the roster the Jets can count on to both 1) not embarrass the Jets and 2) actually make it through the season intact. Typically cap $s are more concerning than real $s, and in this case, the 1 year deal means there is 0 cap implication. It isn't like the team prevented themselves from getting someone else because he is here. It would be a different story then.
Where did you get 25 million from? They can just put a tag on him. Its doesn't even have to be a 1st round tag. Just enough to get a draft pick for him.
Bid against themselves, could have given him 5 mil, don't want to ever see him on the field, play the 25 year old or the rookie, just my opinion, edge
Even if it took $10mil, they gave him a $5mil signing bonus and guaranteed his $5mil salary. I don't know why they guaranteed his salary. In case of injury or Bridgewater/rookie promise, they should've given themselves the option to recoup some money.
Agreed. Even accounting for QB inflation, has a 39 year old QB who has never made the playoffs ever gotten close to that amount of money? If he's such a great mentor hire him as the QB Coach. I would definitely rather have had signed a better center or Matthieu with that money.
Sorry, I thought you said they could franchise tag him..and if he accepted it that is where the 25m would come from.
Did McCown make it through last year unscathed? Also, how can you say the $10M didn't prevent them from getting something else? Don't you think that $10M would have been helpful in getting getting another free agent - Jensen or Mathieu (who signed a one year / $7M contract).
Likely. Bridgewater has no future here. But he can continue to rehab from the injury and if he looks like his old checkdown self somebody will come calling. Heck teams were calling us about the atrocious Bryce Petty last season.
McCown last year was better than Bridgewater ever was. McCown is also not coming off a catastrophic knee injury. He also has a better arm than Bridgewater.
