If Fitzpatrick is the pick in round 1, Mac should be fired on the spot. I can understand Chubb as he's an edge rusher which the Jets haven't had since Abraham, but a DB? No way.
Chubb to me would be very hard to resist. It comes down to how the draft board looks at the end of the day. As much as I would want Chubb, I have Jackson right there on the draft board. Honestly, I like Barkley but I have Lamar higher on my draft board ... dude is so good, he rushed for more yards then Barkley and threw more TDs then Sam Darnold.
But that was in a scheme built for him against college competition. There is no way the Jets will build their system around him, and he won't get those numbers against pros. Jackson is going to need an offensive-minded HC who can think outside the box to make him into the type of player he was in college. I don't know what team has that HC, but is sure isn't the Jets.
He wasn't really schemed, he ran a pro style offense with QB rush packages. The rush packages will be replaced by the RPO, maybe you keep a few in however. Louisville ran a lot of vertical / outside routes. All this talk about not being able to create an offense around Jackson is for the close minded, not someone that thinks outside the box. WCO offense / zone blocking and you implement the RPO on certain plays to get Jackson acquainted. The bootlegs, play-action passes, making reads - Jackson displayed that skill at Louisville. If I can think of a way to get Jackson involved early on as he gets used to the NFL, a coach better know.
I'm certainly not rooting against Jackson, and I believe he is exceptional, but I just don't think that Bowles will utilize him to his strengths. And doesn't the WCO rely on a QB who is accurate? That isn't one of Lamar's strengths, and they're going to have make allowances for that. I know you want Lamar in Green and White, but I don't see it happening.
Bowles wants to run the ball more, you don't think he wouldn't want to implement the RPO? Running the ball with Jackson every now and then to control the clock? Even so, it's on Bates more-so, not Bowles. WCO requires accuracy on short to medium routes first and requires the QB to go through reads. Lamar has issues due to lower body mechanics, which can be fixed via reps (which McCown won't get much of), but he can still thread the needle and is a threat to score. He goes through reads and has more command of the offense in comparison to a Mayfield. The inconsistencies are there, but I have no issue redshirting him and having McCown and Teddy battle it out. The better Teddy does, the higher the value. If Mac ain't trading up, Jackson will be on the radar.
All this talk of sitting at 6 and taking a Nelson or a Chubb is just stupid It is based on the DEFEATEST attitude that assumes ALL THE GOOD QBS ARE GONE Well how in Gods name did THAT happen??? : MM LETS IT HAPPEN instead of being a Dorsey or a Brandon Beane and MAKE IT HAPPEN...he HAS to move up a couple of slots AT LEAST Your taking 2 insurance policy QBs is a WASTE ( 15 to 25 Mil down the drain) without a draftable GOOD QB for our future Not sure the majority here appreciate how CRUCIAL this is after getting lost in a SOJ discussion on OLB vs OG feh
If Macc takes another QB "project" that needs to be red-shirted, when we have so many needs, especially for a QB who can start now, his extension won't mean much. I'm not so sure his accuracy issues are due to poor lower body mechanics, or if they are, that isn't a product of him throwing on the run in which case, changing that is almost impossible at this stage - he's been doing it this way his whole life. He might still be successful with a lower than desirable comp. % if he can hit "homeruns" consistently due to his great athletic ability. To extend that analogy, a guy who can hit 40-50 HRs a year doesn't have to hit .300 to be considered great. In the right system Jackson could be allowed to be less accurate as long as he has the freedom and the supporting cast to make big plays to offset his lower completions. I can see him succeeding i that kind of system, but I don't see the Jets providing that for him.
Just because I am redshirting him doesn't imply he's a project. He can sit back and learn, the kid is only 21 years of age. What if I told you Sam had to sit too? He is a project cause of that? I think Teddy has a big time shot to start this year. McCown will teach Lamar the ropes, Teddy starts hopefully lights it up. Read any scouting report, or even better go back to my thread, the proof is in the GIFs. It's lower body mechanics, his footwork is pretty bad at times. Needs to do a better job of setting his feet, not using all arm at all. He has to refine his game. He hits homeruns with his legs and arms, but he can be much more polished. The bold, really doesn't play a role in my line of thinking as above, there's a way to get Jackson into rhythm. Also, Lamar had the highest drop % of his receivers and also a very bad offensive line. It's not about system, it's about getting players that compliment your QB. Peak Jackson, I think you got a mix between Vick and Russel Wilson.
It's clear that I, nor anyone likely, will convince you that Lamar Jackson isn't going to be the next great Jets QB, (and if he was, I'd be thrilled), but the case you make for him is speculative and based upon a lot of variables that may well not occur. I've looked at all the tape you've provided, and I can see he doesn't set his feet, but that's not so easy a fix as you say. That is a integral part of how he plays, if it even can be changed, it might actually make him worse. And while many say that Darnold might need some time before starting, there are many who think he can step right in. I'm of the first camp, but I haven't heard anyone use the term "redshirt" for him. As for "it's not about system", yeah it is. The CS needs to know how to use the players they have. I don't see Bowles & Co. knowing how to use Lamar's skillset. And BTW, the Jets don't have any All-Pro receivers, and their OL is pretty terrible, so while that might make Lamar feel right at home, it's not going to help him improve. Bottom line: If the Jets take him I hope he succeeds and reinvents the QB position, but I don't think that's going to happen.
I’m finding it extremely unlikely 4 QBs go in the top 5. Most of us agree Barkley for sure goes top 5 so then we just need one other player, I would expect at least one of Chubb/Nelson to also go too 5. Im thinking at least one of Rosen/ Mayfield is available at 6 if not both. Browns- Darnold Giants- Barkley Colts- Chubb Bills - Allen Broncos- Rosen/ Nelson Jets- Baker/Rosen
Ahahahah...you must be talking to Sonnyjim? (101)...Drafting Lamar J would make me want to leave as a fan
Yeah, we can agree to disagree ... we see the game differently and there's nothing wrong with that. I've already stated my case. Lamar is 21 years old, he has a lot to grow on, his footwork is very raw, has shown the ability to have good footwork, needs work as I've said before, but he easily has a top 3 QB upside in this draft. The thread also goes into those pros and cons. There's no perfect QB in this draft.
No no. When i watch Allen he comes off as a little slow in play recognition. His physical attributes have gotten him this far. In the pros i don't think his arm will make up for what he lacks in his brain. Especially with schemes getting far more advanced
He will be taken in the top 5 picks. You are trying to create a narrative about his intelligence without anything to support it. I have not heard one report suggesting he does not have football smarts. He's one of the few prospects that has actually played in a pro style system.
