Overpaying in FA is not a Jets thing, it’s a FA thing. All the 1st day guys get overpaid. While I do think Johnson was overpaid there were far worse deals on the first day. At least the Jets got a very good player who fills a huge need and is a clear upgrade as well as a good fit and good leader.
I see it as a good fit for the defense, the Jets desperately needed a big press coverage guy like that. Skrine on the outsides made me sick, although he was decent in the slot most of the time. He's making 15m, which might be a little bit high, but don't forget Revis got that 16m a year in 2015 when the cap was lower. That was an overpay as well since Revis declined so badly in 2016, but I don't think this contract is that bad. Hopefully it's frontloaded, but haven't seen the details yet.
I love this signing. I love that he is the best press corner in the NFL and he is on the Jets. I swear to Christ though, if I see him playing 5+ yards off of the line of scrimmage, I am going to hate Bowles even more which seems impossible.
you never play press 100% of the time. you have to play some off coverage and some zone as well and mix it up.
Revis in his prime was on that line every single play. He fought every receiver for that 5 yards. It's why he was the best corner in the league for that short time. I'm not saying that Johnson should press every play, but if he's that good at it, he needs to press most of the time.
he was man to man ALMOST every play but even then wasn't always press. If you think that running man press every single play is a good idea, i'm dam glad you aren't the DC
it's not rare lol. that's my point. say 1st down they run he's in press no gain. 2nd down he's in press incomplete pass, 3rd down he backs off for 3rd and long holds them under 10 yards they punt. 33% not in press that drive. A big reason we played a lot of press with revis as well is rex loved his overload blitzes. jets blitz more then any team under rex. you pretty much always want press on a blitz because the QB needs to get the ball out fast. telling a guy hey we paid you 80mil go play press eevry single play is a terrible idea and not how to run an NFL defense
Provide anything tanvible supporting those percentages and I'll really give you an apology. Otherwise your argument is failure.
https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-ranking-nfl-defenses-by-man-coverage-percentage The teams that play the most man coverage in the NFL are at about 50% and not all man is press. The average is lower. in other words less then 50% is the NFL average for press coverage and yet you want us to run it 90+% of the time? I'll take that apology now
They of course will and should mix it up, but this guy is the ideal press corner. He should be pressing far more than any other pre-snap set up. With Toilet running the team, we will see Johnson 10 yards off the WRs more than press.
FWIW the rams ran man less then 50% of the time with johnson. so even with the rams his press man coverage was below 50% of the snaps. Bowles knows how to use DBs. people are are just way too negative and looking for issues that don't' exist
Come on dude, I was talking about Revis. You don't get shit except a rolleyes for deflecting the argument. Wake me up when you can follow a line of logic.
If he had Burris going man he'll have Johnson go man. They need to get Claiborne in here too. By some miracle Matthieu too. They'll have some real talent at that point
