I know they are basically the same player, but Cade McNown retired before half this board graduated high school.
Is it really lack of aggression, though? If a FA doesn't want to come to the Jets, he doesn't want to come to the Jets. Basically our main selling point is, come play with a young tough defense. This is why we have Trumaine and could end up with Mathieu and have one of the top secondaries in the league next year. Just because you don't hear about everything Macc does, doesn't mean he's not trying.
Does it really matter which of them we waste $10 million dollars on? Either way we are not going to the playoffs this year.
Aaron Rodgers wasn’t available. The best QB available in free agency in no way equates to being a QB worth signing. I’m not arguing Cousins isn’t good, but he isn’t goid enough to invest that much money only on a short term solution.
All the great players in the world for the secondary do you No good, without a viable pass rush, of they can't find a good olb in the draft, then nothing will change.
Who cares? It's a one year deal that eats up 1/9th of the money we had to spend. We still got the best CB and ILB available in free agency with still a ton of cash to toss around or carry over. I have a hard time getting worked up over this contract.
Bradford got $20M. And McCown is coming off a pretty good year and serves in a mentor role this year for whoever we draft. Buffalo was also in the market for a similar bridge QB and seeking a future QB. $10M which is only a $4M raise from last year considering what he did last year, is REALLY not that much money, especially considering we are flush with cap space. It's really not an unreasonable number.
Hasty is right. The dumbass Jets had no QB, he has experience with the receivers and line, and he's a spot backup. Only this team pays 10+ million for a backup.
He made 8 million last year and was #11 in QB rating, #4 in comp% and #1 in the league on 3rd down, plus he's a locker room leader and player coach. I don't think it's a leverage thing, he's just getting what the Jets think he's worth, IMO. $10m is way low for a starter, but if he starts half the year and turns it over to Bridgewater / rookie, it seems fair, but I'm no expert on player value, so take this with a grain of salt
McCown at $10mil isn't great, but they view him as a 2nd QB coach. He is willing to help young QB's and will NEVER complain if he isn't the starter. Decent chance he ends up on a coaching staff sometime in the near future as well. Young players look at him as a great leader and if that's the case, his leadership is also vastly underrated. I say great job so long as we draft a QB.
I care because it reflects how our FO evaluates players against the market and their likely output. Is McCown trending upward in his career? Of course not, so a good FO doesn’t pay him like he is. We’ve already been through this with a career loser having a career year and not recognizing it as a fluke.
McCown is a top shelf guy and asset. He will be a player coach and you couldn't ask for a better man to show Baker Mayfield the way. It about the leadership too
