I’m not a big believer in a young QB needing a mentor. If the Jets want to fix the QB position going forward the best chance for that is signing Bridgewater and drafting a 1st rd QB, providing Cousins chooses Minnesota of course. My big concern with that scenario is Mac not being desperate enough to take a QB at 6. I can’t trust that when the time comes at 6 and a guy like Fitzpatrick is staring him in the face that he’ll make the right decision and select the QB. So as someone who desperately wants Cousins or one of the 4 1st rd prospects I think signing McCown is the best chance for that.
IMO, if the Jets want a specific QB, they have no choice but to trade up. If they stay at 6, it means they aren't overly fond of any individual over the rest, and are totally content to just hang back and claim whatever falls to them; aka not a QB as you are suggesting.
Not much chance you can sign Bridgewater to a short term deal so then what? I for one don't want him for any longer than 2 years.
Forgive my ignorance. Can players agree to terms tomorrow?? I know they can sign on Wednesday just curious is we’ll get news on deals tomorrow.
They can’t become official before 4pm Wednesday but I would imagine we’ll be hearing about a lot of “handshake” deals tomorrow.
That’s the fucked part. A team can come in and undermine the deal. Of course that will stigmatize the agent.
I agree with the benefits of McCown. I think that Bowles is more likely to start McCown or Bridgewater than a rookie. IMO that's the only downside to bringing in a vet like McCown or Bridgewater. Perhaps Bowles would be less inclined to start Bridgewater if the competition was close, since he hasn't coached him before and Bridgewater is coming off not playing for two years. While Bridgewater's primary motivation may be to win the starting job, he would not be a malcontent imo. That's not who he is. I read the other day where Keenum said how helpful Bridgewater was to him pointing out fine points and subtleties in the Vikings offense. I read a good bit about Bridgewater in 2013 and 2014 when he was in the draft. He has a very high character, and he would not be a malcontent. If he only signed a one-year contract with the Jets, then he may opt to test FA so he has a chance to start somewhere in 2019, or if he signed a multi-year deal, he might ask to be traded or released, but that would be only natural, and not reflective of a malcontent imo. As I stated in my previous message, I think the positives far outweigh any potential negatives with Bridgewater. 1) We know that he would be a solid starter and probably better than McCown; 2) He offers insurance in case the rookie doesn't develop at all or takes longer than a few games or even a year to develop; 3) If the rookie develops, the Jets could quite possibly either trade Teddy in 2019 or let him walk in FA and possibly gain a compensatory pick - McCown would not offer that possibility.
I hope that Mac would be smarter than that, but you definitely could be right. That is a legitimate concern.
I disagree....You always have to think two steps ahead and make every decision by looking at all of the angles, including what other teams are doing and who is likely to be drafted ahead of them What if they really like Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield for example and aren't in love with any of the other QBs? They feel like one or both of them will make it to 6 and dont want to give up extra draft picks for no reason. What if they don't love any one QB but "like" 4 of them? It's better off you don't "fall in love" with any QBs or prospects because that's when you overpay and make bad/dumb decisions based off of emotion
In some sense you're using different words to say what I'm saying. Falling in love with a specific QB doesn't have to be a bad thing, and doesn't make it automatically wrong. The fact that there are three QBs perceived to be at the top doesn't mean they are all equals to one another. One of the three might be a better fit for the scheme the Jets are running, or posses traits that aren't as available in the other two that team really wants, like energy and leadership. There are reasons to target and pay for a specific guy rather than just accepting whatever other teams are generous enough to leave for you.
Valid arguments. I'm not as read on Bridgewater and will defer to what you see here. It makes sense anyway.
If the Jets love a certain QB that projects to not be there at 6, then for the right compensation it makes sense to try to move up But what if the Jets really like a few of the QBs that should be there at 6? Just because they don't trade up for one doesn't mean they won't pick one...It doesn't mean they're just accepting what's left for them either. Just means they played it right
I get what you are saying. It's hard for us to really evaluate that. Look at last year, public projections for Pat Mahomes was that he was going to be a third round pick. Myself a bunch of other people on the board argued quite strongly that Mahomes was far better than that and was a guaranteed first rounder. He then ended up going 10th after a huge trade up. So to your point, yeah, if the Jets are dead set on Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson, you don't go up to get them. Some would say that about Baker Mayfield. My opinion is that Mayfield won't make it to six, but others disagree. So it's sort of subjective on our biases rather than knowledge of what the team's are thinking. Hope that wasn't confusing / ranty.
I don't think anyone can make that assessment at this point, and maybe not even on draft night. It's quite possible that all four - Rosen, Mayfield, Darnold, and Allen - all go in the first four picks, though not likely, it's possible. The biggest threat to crack the top 4 picks is Barkley, and MAYBE Chubb or Nelson, so the LIKELY outcome is that three of the top 4 QBs will be gone by the Jets #6. It would be very Jetsy if that QB were Allen. Of course on the bright side, since they're so similar, Allen could get the benefit of everything that Hack's been taught.
I agree %100 as I am leaning more and more to drafting one of the top 4 guys if one reaches the Jets at #6 . Would rather draft the top 4 than Cousins any day. Would not have a problem with them drafting Mayfield either as I had previous reservations because of his size He would be exciting to watch.
New to the forum, but been a fan since the early 80's. Have been visiting site as a guest for years, decided to finally create a login with this seasons' free agency and draft upcoming. Since we have the money.. we could offer 30M to Cousins and add maybe 3 quality FA.. and I really like Cousins.. but I like the YOUTH depth the team has and I think the better play is to add 5-6 quality FA while taking a gamble at QB. Next post are my re-signs, acquisitions and cuts
Any thoughts on Suh? Looks more and more likely he gets released by the dolphins. We could use a good face stomped on the DL.
Welcome aboard. I watch from the outside in till around this time of year before chiming in. Can get pretty ugly in here. Enjoy!
All contracts 3-4 years Re-sign: LB- Davis... 5M per TE- Jenkins.. 6M per CB- Claiborne.. 8M per Acquisitions: RB- D. Lewis.. 6M per WR- A. Robinson.. 10M per CB- T. Johnson.. 12M per CB- M. Butler.. 10M per QB- Bridgewater.. 15M per Total 72M ... leaves plenty for the draft and practice squad and any other temptations... not including the cuts I make next.. Cuts: QB- Hack QB- Petty RB- Powell WR- Anderson .. believe in 2nd chances but 3rd or 4th. Talented.. but too troubled. Have to draw the line in sand. G- Carpenter CB- Skrine Add vet fa qb behind Bridgewater and maybe draft a project in 5th etc and stash on P.S. Hopefully draft G- Nelson at 1st rd, he replaces Carpenter 2nd rd early pick, draft C- Billy Price, who can also play G. Mid 2nd pick, draft best RB availabe.. i.e Michel, Chubb, K. Johnson etc.. they split time with Lewis and still have McGuire as #3 Our Secondary then is Johnson and Clairborne on outside and Butler in slot, to go with the young safties. Our current youth at CB provides depth WR- A. Robinson, Enunwa, Kearse, D. Smith, Stewart, Hansen and then Estime for PR/KR OL- Beachum/Nelson/Price/Winters/Shell
Just because they like a specific QB doesn't mean that they haven't thought two steps ahead, haven't looked at all the angles, or that they are "in love" with that player. It could be just a cold, factual realization that there is only one QB that they like and think will have a great future, who is a perfect fit for their offense. If they like Jackson and Mayfield, and don't really like any of the other QBs (I dislike the use of the term "in love with" as it connotes something entirely different or at least can), and after doing their due diligence, thinking two steps ahead, and thinking about what other teams are likely to do, think that one or both will make it to 6, then they can stay put and take the better of the two. IMO there's an excellent chance that Mayfield won't make it to #6 and taking Jackson at #6 would be a HUGE reach. I think it would be very rare that a team would like 4 QBs and be happy with any one of the four. Players have different skill sets, attitudes, strengths/weaknesses, etc. For instance, Mayfield was #1 in many categories this season, has a strong arm, is very accurate, has a great football IQ, is great at extending plays and being creative, doesn't turn the ball over, is a great leader and a fiery competitor, and four years of starting experience. Jackson has a strong arm (perhaps stronger than Mayfield's), is more athletic than Mayfield, but doesn't even begin to have the accuracy, football IQ, leadership qualities and only has 3 years starting experience. His throwing motion may need to be altered to protect his shoulder, needs to work on his accuracy and footwork. Darnold has a pretty strong arm, but not as strong as Mayfield's. He can extend plays and create, but perhaps not as well as Mayfield. He isn't as great a leader, may not have the football IQ, has a funky throwing motion that could lead to a lot of interceptions in the NFL, turned the ball over a lot in college via fumbles and interceptions, and only has 1 1/2 years of starting experience. Rosen is the most natural passer in the draft, has a strong arm, but has the red flag on healthy issues, isn't as athletic or mobile as the other QBs, like Rosen, has a slimmer/smaller build/frame, is very intelligent and probably has a high football IQ, but also has a penchant for throwing the ball up for grabs when his team is behind. He has 2 1/2 years of starting experience. Allen has the strongest arm in the draft, but the worst accuracy. If he isn't as athletic or more athletic than Jackson, he's close. His football IQ, decision making needs work, but he doesn't have any fundamental issues with his footwork or throwing motion. With Jackson and Allen, the Jets might have to significantly alter their offense in order to get the best out of those QBs, whereas with Mayfield, Rosen and Darnold, they may not have to make any alterations to the offense. Mayfield, Rosen and Darnold are the consensus top 3 QBs in the draft, with Allen 4th, and Jackson a distant 5th. If a GM doesn't like at least one of these QBs better than the others then he should find another line of work.
