Thoughts? This may be more suitable for the Draft sub-forum as well, but where do ya guys stand on Bilal going into the season? Same for McGuire. Obvious draft targets appear to be Michel, Guice, Chubb, Jones II & Freeman. Wishful thinking is Barkley, but that's not happening. I think I would like McKinnon from Minny too.
Jets need to draft a RB out of this loaded RB class, simple as that. Hopefully they draft someone that is good enough to take the bulk of the carries next year and going forward.
Makes sense to me. RB should be a priority in the second round. Hell, if we sign Cousins, it could be a priority in the first round. Provided Barkley is available.
Powell is 30. His career is only going to decline from here. Some fans can argue to their blue in the face that he has "younger legs" and that he's always been under-utilized, but what's done is done and, quite frankly, he has had too many nicks over this career whenever he was given slim chances to show his worth as a feature back. The position badly needs an infusion of youth and as of now I can't see McGuire as anything more than a nice third down back/rotational player, until proven otherwise. Drafting someone in the 2nd or 3rd round would be a great move for this offense, as long as, of course, they take the right guy.
I think that makes perfect sense. Powell was never meant to be a feature back. He's played well when he's been asked to be the lead guy but that's just not sustainable for him. He's the perfect complementary back next to a bruiser. Darkwa fits the bill, and of course there are tons of RBs in the draft. I'd love him next to Nick Chubb...
Has Leveon Bell been slapped with the franchise tag yet? If he hasn't the Jets should sign him when free agency begins.
Powell should be kept as part of the rotation. He's been a great Jet, still contributes at a very high level, and I hope he can finish his career as a Jet. The Jets definitely need to add a starting caliber RB in the draft. I don't really want one of the FA RBs unless the Jets would keep 4. Ideally, they need a power back that can get the tough yards like LeGarrette Blount. Bo Scarborough in a mid or late round would be a good addition as a 4th RB.
Powell has always been good as a receiver out of the backfield. He gets some caries and passes to keep moving the chains. That doesn't stop us from trying to get a real power back in the 2nd or 3rd round. Better draft one then spend cap on any free agent.
I'm not worried about RB for this season personally. I think the powell/maguire combo sharing the load is good enough. we can add darkwa for depth as well. yeah the class is loaded but we have other needs. if one of the 2nd tier RBs with a 2nd round grade fall to the 3rd i'd be ok with it, but i wouldn't use one of our top 3 picks on one when we need a QB, WR, O-line, and CB and even pass rusher way more then we need a RB. RBs are too easy to find in the NFL and can start from day 1. we can look at the 2019 class instead for a RB
Bilal Powell has never been relied upon as a feature back so I'm not shocked by the jets wanting to add more RB's to the mix. McGuire will be on this team, but I wonder if Powell will be looked upon as a way to create cap during a year that the RB draft class is very strong. I can see the jets going Powell, McGuire and drafting one/signing one or McGuire, sign a diff RB through FA, drafting one.
He's gotten Kamara comparisons. I'm giddy at the thought, but that also may mean he goes earlier than expected. If he is there for us in R2, they better take him.
Best thing to do. Powell is lightning in a bottle, but he's not a consistent performer. Hard to make a guy the bell cow when he's constantly dealing with injuries, and he's going to be 30. I hope they draft a back, but they need to draft someone with a different skill set. My personal choice is Nick Chubb, 2 years removed from ACL injury and he showed signs of being close to 100% last year. As a Freshman, he was arguably better than Gurley.
Yes. there are a lot of other needs, but when the quality is there you take it. The Jets need a game-breaking RB. Having one helps the OL and the QB and WRs, as well as the "D" because he can consistently move the chains and keep them off the field. That contribution is much greater than a Safety or CB can make and the Jets took two Safeties last year, which I know you were a fan of. Barkley would be worth whatever it takes to get him, but barring that there are several other "Tier 2" RBs that can fit the bill too. Setting Barkley out of the equation because he's a different animal, and assuming the Jets are still looking for a QB, the needs I would be looking to fill in order would be: 1. QB 2. Pass Rusher 3. OL/RB 4. CB/WR On #3 it would depend on who is available as to taking the OL or RB at that point., likewise with #4.
mostly true but with a bad o-line not much a RB can do. plus with a rookie QB he'll face stacked boxes on top of that. plus good RBs can easily be found in later rounds (kamara and hunt for example last year) it's not a priority position. meanwhile a good RB can easily outproduce a much better one if he has a better o-line. fixing the o-line is much more important as it helps the RB and QB and Wrs much more then the other way around. sure it isn't the "sexy" pick but it's the right pick. sarcasm? I hated the double safety pick during the draft last year. I'm happy with how both turned out but i wanted an offense heavy draft and our 1st 2 picks were safeties. I think we all agree on need 1 from your list. Need 2 I think should be lower however if key is there in the 2nd round, I think we should grab him. I don't want chubb if he was to fall, I don't think he fits the 3-4. I'd say 1 QB 2 O-line 3 WR 4 CB 5 Pass rusher 6 RB although as said above if key is there in the 2nd, I'd grab him.
You make a valid argument, but I would say that a great RB can make an OL and QB much better than they would be otherwise and so wouldn't pass over a guy who could perform at that level. Consider that as good as Dallas's OL was/is having Zeke took them to another level; same with the Eagles. Actually it wasn't sarcasm...I thought you said you liked the 2 Safety pick, my mistake. Glad to hear we're of the same belief about upgrading the offense. I also think that getting a stud pass rusher is a priority, although not with the 1st pick unless the options of QB, Barkley, Nelson are all off the table. They need to get pressure on the QB, otherwise their investment in the secondary is watered down substantially. I do agree that upgrading the OL is a big need, and hopefully they'll do that between FA and the draft. And let me repeat: except of Barkley, regarding the other RBs, when the Jets are on the clock, I would have them take the better between the available RBs and OL, so I'm not discounting the OL at all, just saying that getting a stud RB is a priority too. As for WR, I really hope they get a #1 type in FA, along with CB.
i disagree on zeke. lets not forget demacro murray killed it in dallas and then sucked everywhere else. Dallas is a perfect example they had one of the best o-lines in the NFL and had a rookie QB and rookie RB who tore it up. Dak had a great year. Zeke made the pro bowl and averaged 5.1 YPC. Dallas went 13-3 and won their division then they lost 2 lineman in free agency because of the cap and in comes 2017 Zeke dropped down to 4.1YPC. he went from 1TD per game to .7TDs per game Dak dropped down from a 104.9 to a 86.6 QBR. he threw the same TDs but his INTs went form 4 to 13 his completions dropped 5% he threw for 400 less yars despite throwing the ball 30 times more. dallas went 9-7 and missed the playoffs In other words the loss of 2 lineman killed the offense and hurt zeke and dak a lot. Then look at minnesota. cook was killing it, he went down. Bradford went down. and keenum plus a RBBC with murray, mckinnon, and asiata (IIRC) still provided a really good offense due to the o-line While the NFL has changed a lot, the 1 thing that hasn't changed is the saying "games are won in the trenches"
I believe that the Jets can go RB, then OL with their 2nd round picks assuming that: 1) They still have both 2nd round picks 2) They haven't taken Barkley in round 1 We need a game changing RB, new C, and maybe LT. WR shouldn't be a huge priority in the draft especially if we sign Robinson.
