To me there is little harm in having him back to compete for the No.3 job with a UDFA or Round 7 QB. Cousins or McCown will be QB1. A rookie from Round 2 or 3, or a veteran who comes on the cheap, should be QB2. Hackenberg vs a Round 7 or UDFA QB should be QB3.
Given the current CBA, project QBs like Hackenburg are no longer a viable option. The CBA severely limits off-season contact between a player and the coaching staff. During training camp, it limits the number and duration of practices. During the season, it restricts practices with hitting. Given all those limitations, how in the hell can a team develop a project QB? You can't work with him in the off-season, and live practice reps are limiting during camp and during the season. Where does a guy like Hackenburg get live reps, which he needs to learn to play? Maybe he was a wasted pick, but maybe he had talent that could have been developed under the pre-CBA system. What you can fault Maccagnan for is drafting a project QB at a time when the CBA has taken away the means for developing a project QB. P.S. I understand that there are good reasons for the limitations in the current CBA.
that would be so annoying lol. after we trade up for a QB or spend a zillion dollars on kirk cousins... Hack comes out of nowhere ready to look like a franchise QB
If the Jets don't add a new QB to the mix we may finally see Todd Bowles get upset. There isn't enough Zoloft in the world to handle going into a make-or-break season with Christian Hackenberg as your great hope.
only thing worse, would be we extend him with an outrageous contract, and then he reverts to trash. Very Jets
Hack is 23 years old and I'd like to think he's still in that process of learning and fine tuning his game. The problem with all of it is he was drafted in the second round when most scouts considered him a fourth round pick. Pair jets inability to have a franchise QB + drafting a QB high meanwhile they don't see the field = recipe for disaster. Jets fans are ready to move on but I think its way too soon to give up. I'd cut Petty given that he actually looked worse in his junior season and allow Hack to stick around to continue developing. Irregardless, Jets are going to address the QB spot in free agency and/or the draft, and Hack will likely never be able to play any meaningful snaps with the Jets. I consider Hack's failures as not only his own failures, but that of Maccagnan's and Bowles'
You can't fine tune something if it's not even close to being in tune. He's awful. He does very little well. Fine tuning is what Goff, Wentz, etc. need to do. Hack needs to go to the body shop for a complete overhaul.
There is no reason to get rid of Hack but it would be career suicide to rely on Hack. You go about your QB business like Hack is the turd he has so far been and if he proves to not be a turd then great, if not then you get rid of him when the time is right.
I don't disagree as I don't think he's impressed at all, I just don't necessarily subscribe to the idea that a 23 year old can't get better. That's not to say he will, but I think he should be afforded the opportunity to do so. Bryce had 3 seasons and actually regressed last year, IMO, so to me as a 3rd stringer, would it really make that much of a difference if we kept him for 1 more season and cut him next year? We all know Jets are gonna go QB in the draft/FA
If you're a QB guru, any hype about how much you've helped some QB is great advertising. But the questions are these: 1. Can you permanently change a QB's throwing motion? When he's under stress in the pocket under a heavy rush, will he revert to his old bad habits? It's sort of like the question in baseball as to whether you can fix a hitter who has a hitch in his swing or who overstrides. 2. When a QB is struggling, how much is throwing mechanics and how much is other factors, like decision-making and the ability to process information in a split second? Sure, mechanics are important, but how important? Are they the difference between an elite QB and a career backup?
The totally Jetsian scenario is we sign Cousins to a huge deal that precludes trading him anywhere for the next 3 seasons and then he get hurt and Hack becomes an FQB. No way out.
The kid couldn't take the field at the end of a supposed rebuilding year in his 2nd year just to gain exposure. He's toast and the only reason he's not been cut yet is to not make Mac look bad.
