Cost will be too high he is just NOT worth the money he will get.Team has so many holes if we had competent people in charge , in time this would all be fixable. Sadly our guys in charge ,,,,well,,,u know ,,,,, Im a no to Cousins
If anyone's read any of my posts since January, you know my answer. 100% Yes, l want Kirk Cousins to be the Jets franchise Quarterback, the one we've been waiting for since Pennington's right shoulder fell apart.
I am not questioning you so please don't take me asking the wrong way. This is more of a rhetorical question, but feel free to answer. What makes you think he can be a "Franchise QB"? Stats are stats. Sometimes they tell a great deal, sometimes they can mislead. In Cousins' case, I think they are a bit misleading.
What makes you think Rosen or Mayfield could be a franchise QB? They haven't played a snap yet, they could be nothing more then a lesser Eli Manning (Rosen) and Jeff Garcia (Mayfield). I mean the game works both ways ...
Oh it definitely works both ways. I agree with you on that, but my original post suggests why I am more comfortable looking to the draft for the answer. I don't view Cousins as the answer, too costly, and while draft is a crap shoot, I believe this is the route to take.
I really don’t understand why Kirk Cousins is so disrespected by some members of this fanbase. He is not one of the 5 or so elite QBs in the league but he is certainly amongst the next tier and still in the prime of his career. An argument can be made that he is just entering the prime of his career as he has only had 3 full years as a starter and QBs have proven to get better as they age in today’s NFL. I can’t vote from my phone but this is as easy a yes as they come.
That's fair for sure, dependent on the QB ... I think getting Cousins outweighs, Mayfield and Allen specifically. Darnold, Rosen and Jackson, I like those 3 specifically. However, if we can get Cousins and surround him with a better line, I think he can do better then what Mayfield or Allen can bring to the table.
What makes you think Kirk Cousins can be a franchise QB? Kirk Cousins has already mentioned in the same breath as Neil O'Donnell.
He kept that franchise from turning into a complete dumpster fire. He's led numerous comebacks and put up great statistics on a broken team. Comparing Neil to Cousins to me is a poor evaluation of the situation. It's not nearly the same scenario, or player. Cousins has done far more with a less stable organization and offense. He's not perfect, but I don't think he's reached his ceiling just yet. I think he's got another gear that can be tapped into.
If we can get a team friendly deal sure. But that's not what it's going to take. So instead of salary cap hell, use draft picks and climb up the board and get either Darnold/Rosen and continue to build up the team.
Yea, by who? A bunch of keyboard GMs? I'll wait til someone with actual clout makes the comparison. It probably won't happen.
I'm just a Cousins fan. I'm a Michigan fan when it comes to college ball and thus I watch a lot of Big 10 games and I was routinely impressed by Cousins during his time at Michigan State. I was bummed for him when he was drafted behind RG3 in DC, but excited for him when he got, and seized, his opportunity there. I think he has everything you want in a Quarterback, especially between the ears and how he carries himself. I know he isn't perfect and that he'll never be Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, but I think he is a Tier 2 QB and therefore a franchise Quarterback. He, usually, makes smart decisions with the football and when I see him play, I just see "it". I've seen him lead some terrific comebacks and I've seen do it with limited talent. I don't think there are 8 QB's better in this league than him. I think he's overcome a lot in DC in the past 3-4 years and after seeing that, I think that will really help him here, if he chooses to sign here, and all the issues that come with playing in New York, for this franchise and for a team with similar, but I believe better, WR depth and if we do things the right way and build the offensive line, he will be better protected here despite Washington having Williams and Scherff. I believe once he is shown belief in his abilities by an organization, he will only improve.
Surrounding any QB the Jets plan to go after has to be the top priority. Free agency should include some Oline help and perhaps a WR.
I think that this is the one argument that I will hang onto if we do in fact sign Cousins. He has helped to carry that team which does not have a whole lot of talent.
Love your post and you pulled some great examples and reasoning. If we do sign him, I hope you are right and I will root for him regardless.
Thanks. I will root for whoever the QB is come Week 1. I just want it to be Cousins or a rookie, badly. Enough of the retreads.
This has been my thinking. The cap will continue to rise each year, but a $30 Mil per year contract will still hurt our ability to improve the team.
Trading away draft picks isn't going to save us from cap hell because we'll have to buy veterans to replace the cheap production our picks would have gotten us.
