It will look like a bargain in 2-3 seasons from now. And wait until the next CBA. Contracts will rise even higher.
Ok: Am I only one who thinks(serious question) we have 100++ in cap. Have 0 answer for QB. Has 0 faith in QB development. Signing cousins to a 30 mil/yr deal with a way to escape year 4? How can it hurt? Another Top 10 qb hits the market in the next decade and we miss out? One is ripe for the pickings his team just traded for another QB, we have money, and a high pick. FA happens before the draft so it will be interesting. I am in the park of sign #1 Leveon or #2 signing Kurt. We have the money lets not trade picks away there are 2 more then worth FA's worth to make a splash.(OL, OL, OL next 4 posts because we wouldn't' help either; we can't help ourselves ....etc) plenty of room to build around them with money and picks
You’re good. I’ve been getting fucked up in Maui all week. The Jets don’t have to blow all their cap money. They can spend what they need to fill some holes and then they can hold onto the money as carryover for next offseason.
I'm more than ready to give Cousins $30 mil a year with an out for the team somewhere in there. We'd still have damn near $70 mil to play with.
He went undefeated on a team that had one win before him and spent most of the season inside the 9ers building. They know exactly what they are getting in him. those situations are nothing alike.
5 years and $140-150 million for Cousins, seemingly front-loaded in the first 3 years, would be a very good deal. Take a QB in Round 2 this or next year to sit behind him. Re-evaluate the position after the 2020 season when Cousins' deal has only 2 years left and hopefully only $40-50 million and thus is hopefully set up in a way where the Jets can get out of it IF he isn't performing to expectations --- and if he is, he's a bargain.
Still this is a classic NFL move. It's easy to come in when there is no game film on a guy. This season there will be more, we will see how he plays then. The jets knew what they were getting when they resigned fitzpatrick after a record breaking season, how's that work out? To me the jury is still out on Jimmy G. The 49ers lost 5 games by 3 or less points before Jimmy, so its not like they were hapless. 2 of their last five wins were by 3 points or less. So i dont see anything that tells me hes worth the money he got. A decent contract absolutely tho. But hey, NFL coaches and GMs wonder why their turnover is atrocious. Most QB contracts are only fully guaranteed for the first 2 years, Stafford's was only fully guaranteed for the first year. I wouldn't expect an out after 4 years , 2 years would be the norm .
I'm not sure the exact amount but NFL teams are forced to spend a certain amount of their cap. In addition the Jets have a golden opportunity to sign multiple impact players and front load the deals without handicapping their long term future.
The rule for spending is 89% of the cap, but there is no single season limit. It's based on 4 year cycles, currently spanning 2017-2020.The Jets can carry over as much as they want, there is no minimum they are required to spend. The penalty for not reaching the 89% floor after 4 years is, the amount underspent is distributed to the teams played as bonuses. Edit. Just to clarify that's cash spending. So even though signing bonuses are pro rated , the full bonus counts toward the 89% even if it doesn't count against the current cap.
This is why I laugh when people have meltdowns over QB contracts. Very rarely do they ever come back to bite a team in the ass and very often do they pan out just fine. You will absolutely get 2-3 prime years of Cousins and if you’re paying him “market value” for it, then who cares? Especially when you’re a team like the Jets that have a billion dollars and glaring hole at QB. You absolutely spend that money in a top 12-15 QB. But, we are Jets fans and this is TGG... meltdowns are the norm.
They are generally the same ones who complain nonstop about a player yet expect multiple early picks for said player, they also suggest trade scenarios where the Jets trade back and get multiple picks in current draft and next year's first round pick , but argue the Jets Should be able to trade up to 1 for a single later round pick.
