But he hasn't proven that he can't play in those conditions, plus he plays in Houston in a controlled setting, for 8/16 games you have nothing to fear, the number is actually likely closer to 12/16 factoring in early season road weather and road dome games.
Re: the windy conditions: this stems from people around here condemning Maccagnan for not drafting Watson.
Well Condem is a nice way to put how we feel, the man deserves to be tarred and feathered for not drafting Watson, even a potential franchise QB is worth way more then a solid safety.
Easy to spot those who hate to be wrong, so they either root for a player to fail and/or need to see extra proof. First Watson was Vince Young coming off his National Championship win, and now he's a 1 hit wonder. Next year the haters will have to find something else to point to, and they will.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2018/02/kirk_cousins_says_working_with_jets_jeremy_bates_w.html Here is what Cousins had to say on ESPN on Friday, via Rich Cimini: "With the Jets, the first thing that stands out is Jeremy Bates has a connection to coach Shanahan. Both Mike, Kyle, that whole system I played in. Sean McVay comes from that tree. I just think so highly of them as play callers, as offensive gurus if you will. Because Jeremy comes from that tree, it would be exciting to think about working with someone like that, knowing how important Xs and Os and game planning is and having the right play caller."
Or we can wait for the draft and see who falls to 6. Signing any QB to a significant deal is a risk when we don't know if the guy we evaluate as best will fall to us in the draft or not.
The point of free agency is that it artificially drives up the value of the players who are free that year. This is because when supply is more limited than demand prices always rise. This is one of the primary reasons that talented free agents are a double-edged sword. You generally get less for your cap dollar than you would on any similarly competent player acquired any other way. That's why the teams that make the big free agent signings year after year never seem to profit in the end. One guy that is the last piece of the puzzle makes some sense but building a puzzle out of very expensive pieces does not.
What do you want for a quarterback depth chart? No mater how you slice it you need a veteran. We don't know how the draft is going to go down.
By this post I take it you've watched everyone of Cousins' snaps and know that he's never thrown an untimely and/or costly INT? Also I didn't say the numbers are the same. I clearly expressed that Cousins' numbers were better. I simply questioned if the difference between their numbers was worth $25-$30 million. I think we all know the ages of everyone being discussed didn't think I needed to inform anyone. Is the the fact that he is 9 years younger than McCown suppose to make that ridiculous price tag palatable? Since we're on the topic of age, let's not forget Cousin's will also be 9 years older than a rookie draft pick. Prior to the season we were considered as having the worst set of offensive skill players in the NFL. So much so many thought we would not win a game. Now you want me to sell me on how much more fire power McCown had compared to Cousins...LOL. Even with injuries if you think the depth chart below is worse than what McCown was working with, I have a bridge I'd love to sell you. WR Josh Doctson Brian Quick LT Trent Williams Ty Nsekhe LG Arie Kouandjio Kyle Kalis C Chase Roullier Tony Bergstrom Demetrius Rhaney RG Brandon Scherff Tyler Catalina RT Morgan Moses Ty Nsekhe TE Jordan Reed Vernon Davis Niles Paul Jeremy Sprinkle WR Jamison Crowder Maurice Harris WR Ryan Grant Robert Davis QB Kirk Cousins Colt McCoy RB Samaje Perine LeShun Daniels Kapri Bibbs
There will still be free agents out there after the draft. Also, the Jets aren't limited to only taking QB's in the 1st round. Let's say the Broncos sign Kirk Cousins. The Vikings choose to keep Case Keenum with an eye to taking a QB at some point in the draft. The Bengals stay with Andy Dalton, maybe with that same eye or thinking about giving the job to McCarron in 2019 if he loses his RFA appeal. The Browns stand pat and wait for the draft. The Fins stay committed with Ryan Tannehill - a guy who looked remarkably similar to Kirk Cousins in terms of production until he got hurt. The Bills sign somebody, and Tyrod Taylor is on the market. Arizona is the wild card here because they have no QB and they probably will not land Cousins. They could sign Sam Bradford or any of the vet QB's that lose their job if a team above makes a different choice. They could do that and also draft a 1st or 2nd round QB in waiting. Ok, so we're through free agency and it's likely that Teddy Bridgewater, Josh McCown and Tyrod Taylor are still hanging out waiting for a contract. Maybe something really strange happened and Ryan Tannehill is there instead of one of the above. Maybe the Vikings manage to convince Bridgewater to take a short-term deal so they have another year to evaluate his recovery from the injury. The point is that after Cousins the QB free agent market is full of replaceable players. One of those guys signing somewhere almost guarantees that a similar talent drops free in the process. This is probably why the Redskins traded for Alex Smith. They evaluated the QB free agent market as Cousins and the rest and knew they could not retain Cousins. Ok, so we've got this weakish pool of replacement QB's still available and it's draft day. The Browns take Sam Darnold The Giants take Josh Rosen The Colts take Josh Allen, with an eye to developing and trading him if Luck returns to form and moving on if Luck does not. The Browns take Saquon Barkley The Broncos take Minkah Fitzpatrick due to the necessary Talib Aqib cut to get Cousins under the cap. The Jets can take Baker Mayfield on the 6. They can trade down a bit looking for Lamar Jackson. They can take the BPA if they evaluate somebody who is left as clearly the most value on the board. They can move back up into the end of the first and grab the QB who dropped, a la Bridgewater and Carr in 2014. Then whatever their situation is at QB post-draft they will still be able to pick up somebody like McCown, Taylor, Bridgewater, etc to round out the depth chart with Christain Hackenberg in his usual 3rd spot.
The Jets depth chart is pretty comparable and that’s even including Pryor and Thompson who you left off. Also why include the OL chart when they played with about 85 different combos? And I believe it was even Cousins himself who said that even if a team’s depth chart looks one way right now, they can bring in more than just him as a FA. You’re going to tell me if we add a guy like Barkley or Allen Robinson to our current offense, it’s not head and shoulders better than what Cousins had in Washington? Come on.
In the situation that you posed the jets have one option and that's to pick Baker Mayfield, any other option and Mac won't survive the season.
What I take from this thread, and this entire season, is that no QB is good enough for the NY Jets to sign, trade up for or draft. Cousins? A terrible QB? Rosen? Sucks. Darnold? Overrated. Mayfield? Next Manziel. We shouldn’t pay for a free agent QB, whether its Cousins or Smith, because no available QB would ever be worth what they get paid, but no QB is worth the risk of also ever trading up for. The only QB Jets fans will ever want to take a chance on would be if we go 0-16 and Jesus Christ comes down and blesses the top rated QB in the draft prior to being selected. Otherwise trade the fuck out of the spot and try again next year.
The point is that the worst option is to try to force things by overpaying for somebody who is not guaranteed anyway. None of the prospects in the draft are a mortal lock to be a star. Cousins is not guaranteed to get the Jets to the playoffs given the team's other deficiencies. None of the QB's behind him in free agency is clearly the next best guy - there are 3 or 4 guys who might be the next best guy and overpaying for any of them would be a mistake. You have to get down to a 1000-1 against type situation for the Jets to be really screwed by standing pat. It's 50/50 they are screwed with any aggressive move they make in this draft/free agent market.
Wonderful. I think Cousins is probably just using the Jets as a negotiating tool. I highly doubt he wants to come to play the Pats twice a year.
but as just a fan of the Jets brad, I don't really give a shit about setting the market too high or football economics or whatever. In terms of saving money and drafting quarterbacks, yeah obviously I would love it if they saved money and drafted the next great thing. I would prefer it in fact over Kirk Cousins. But my confidence level in this organization's ability to scout and find the next great QB in the draft is exactly ZERO. These are the guys that thought Petty and Hackenberg were good choices. At pick number 6 there will probably be a couple choices for QB, even if there are 2 solid options -- they will choose the wrong one most likely!!! They've also set themselves up in a dangerous spot where they pretty much have to find a QB this year no matter what. How many years has regimes here put themselves in that spot and failed miserably, overrating some rookie?? same shit, different GM/Coach/QB.... then you see a damn decent free agent like Cousins come available for the first time in forever. This is something new. A good quarterback in his prime available for once? groomed by someone else? .... If they don't at least try to make this happen, I'm gonna be pissed off
