Really hope the Jets don't sign Cousins- we need to draft a QB. If we do take him, I will support him, however 25-30 million on a top 15 QB is just not worth it.
Of course that’s the danger in losing..a team & eventually a whole franchise loses their confidence, forgets how to win on & off the field.
Jets have a lot of flexibility and options...Makes a huge difference with the $90M salary cap space. Just imagine if they only had $25-$50M? It changes the strategy entirely. Makes it very, very interesting what Mac and FO do or the direction they take...Regardless, they can build around the QB via FA or draft picks. The team still has a lot of holes on both sides of the ball. I think the best and safest route tis to get a guy like Cousins. Iff Barkley is not available, I say trade the #6 pick to pick up value pick such as another 2nd or 3rd round pick to add more depth. They can still get a decent RB, QB, OL, LB, DE and CB with picks in the 2 and 3 rounds... If they go with a 1st round QB (Rosen, Mayfield, etc), they have to find all of the right picks and acquire the right players to have an immediate impact. The probability is low... That said, safest and quick immediate impact is to get a guy like Cousins and build around him (and still get a QB in the 2nd round).
New York Jets are turning into the Cincinnati Bengals if Mac sign Kirk Cousins. Stability with a ceiling of one and done in the playoffs.
Plus 100 Hey..let me say this I WAS FOR A FULL TANK...plus maybe a HANDFUL of others here(before you joined) Most posters here grab a six pack and want to see their team win on Sunday...in light of draft strategy that's just DUMB...could never get the big celebration over the KC win for example...ruined our chances further As Legler just said I would rather have another 5-11 or 0-16 season then to have retread Capt Kirk warp us to 8-8?! LMAO...I can just imagine the excuses boiling over by half this Board when we don't make Playoffs with Cousins Listen..I happen to LIKE McGOwn as a person tutor for new kid etc ..but boy did he lay us an egg...hahaha
If a QB you draft fails, you’re not stuck with a mega contract that straps you down for 3-4 yrs and prevents you from improving the team in the long term. If Cousins flops here, anywhere for that matter, that team will eat a lot of money and be handcuffed as a team because of cap restrictions later on. I would rather go low risk - high reward in drafting a QB. Especially this year
This is a window that the Jets will very rarely get. A high level, pro bowl QB in his prime being available almost never happens. Cousins is much more the sure thing than a kid coming out of college. Furthermore the Jets track record at drafting and developing a young QB is one of the worst in all of football. This isn't about low risk high reward. That's basically saying if the college kid doesn't pan out then at least we're not tied up cap wise. No that's a horrible, defeatist way of thinking. We have a chance to start winning. That's what this is about. Cousins gives us a real chance. This is about having a franchise QB that you can build your team around. These opportunities rarely come along in the NFL.
1. Redskins 2. Browns 3. Broncos 4. ??????? 5. ??????? 6. ??????? I wonder who the other 3 teams were. Cardinals, Bills, and.....Jets? Maybe Dolphins.
Except there is a much better chance that Cousins won't fail. Chances are the QB you draft will. I'm not signing a guy who I like with an eye on his failing. I'm signing a Cousins over a draft pick because I think he's the better option to succeed.
The Bengals had a nasty offensive line, a good defense with play makers and A.J. Green for most of that run. The Jets have none of those things yet. Adding Cousins to this team does not make them a playoff contender until lots of other areas are addressed.
But we are allowed to add those things. It’s not cousins or draft and other free agents. So it’s add cousins and try to find weapons, improve o line and defense or draft qb and try to find weapons, improve o line and defense. All while hoping the drafted qb is at least as good as cousins.
What makes you think he has a better chance to succeed here? What’s the evidence? Are you looking at individual stats? Are you considering the red flags at all? Skins... Didn’t think he was worth the money from the start. Prior GM is on record basically stating Cousins is nothing special. Skins traded, giving up draft asset, a quality player, and money to avoid paying Cousins what he wanted. They are letting a homegrown QB they found in the 4th to walk. Walk. For nothing. Top offensive minded HC did not and were not willing to take a flyer on Cousins. That includes Jay Gruden, the guy currently coaching the Skins. He does not elevate the play of those around him like Elite QBs do. He does not have a very good W/L ratio. Not to mention his abysmal playoff showings. He has not shown he is anything other than a system QB, obviously he hasn’t had much chance to prove otherwise but that’s a huge gamble for another team. Even the Skins fan base (a lot of them) think he is nothing more than a system QB. He clearly thinks he is better than he is and he wants to be paid like he’s the best QB in the league. Way too high of a risk for a guy you “think” will be the better option. I have a feeling you haven’t done much research or watched much college film of some of these QBs coming out of college. I may be wrong but I don’t think I am. If Cousins flops. That team will feel the burden of that in a very big way. Not so much if you draft a college QB and he flops. You just try again, you can’t do that with, Cousins. Instead there will be a huge financial mess to clean up first. Which will only age the quality players we have, then we will find ourselves right back in the same shit hole we just climbed out of. It’s just not worth it to me.
Why does a rookie QB have to have an immediate impact? No one expects a rookie QB to come in and have an immediate impact. Peyton Manning struggled mightily his rookie season. Most QBs do. It takes them a while to adjust to the speed of the NFL, to the more complex defenses, to having to go through multiple progressions, and then there are those who played in a spread system that was a one-read system and where they were always taking the snaps in shotgun formation, so they didn't learn how to command the huddle or the drops and associated footwork necessary.
I disagree. Going for the safe route is the cowardly, defeatist attitude. You guys who want Cousins are afraid the Jets won't draft the right QB or will fail to develop him. This is a rare year where there are a lot of pretty good quality QBs available, and the Jets are in position to draft one. Most years when the Jets are in a position to draft a FQB, there is only one or two really good QB prospects in the draft and they go before the Jets get a chance to draft. Now the Jets finally have a chance to draft a FQB prospect either by trading up a couple of spots or staying put, and you and several others are wanting to bail on potentially getting our own FQB that would provide stability to the franchise for the next 10-15 years and you want to punt. Further, the owner is supposedly finally being patient, and we're finally doing what we should have been doing for the last 10 years or so, and doing a complete rebuild, and you guys want to scrap it and go all in to make the playoffs. Not the best course imo to build a SB winner or achieve sustainable success. Sad that some of you want to give up on the idea of achieving sustainable success where the Jets will be good year in and year out for a few years of "better" mediocrity.
It won't be cheap, but the Eagles and Rams have their FQB's because they had the balls to move up and get their guy. One of those teams is now in the Super Bowl in largely because their FQB led them to the number 1 seed in the NFC before going down.
