He is the first shot at getting a good qb this year. First take a shot at a good qb if you don’t land him look to the draft and hope you can get someone at least as good as him. I don’t think anyone is obsessed with him or putting him in the Hall. He is just one of many options and the first to be available.
I wish we got his son to be our HC after Bowles regressed in every facet of coaching in 2016. Who knows, we might have our QB of the future on the team in Mahomes after Kyle successfully convinced Mac to take him.
I'm a big fan of Kyle as well. He'll lead the niners to the playoffs before Bowles figures out how to be an NFL HC. Cousins might be a long shot but I believe and trust Mike Shannahans assessment of QBs. He was big on Mahommes, that's what turned my point of view on him.
He's not even good. That's the problem. Case in point: The point here? A QB without a head = Belicheat's hearty breakfast
I don't agree. They are weighing the options of going with a complete unknown vs keeping a productive, above average quarterback. I don't think them considering keeping him means that they "love" him.
He's "special" because of the way he practices? Yeah, ok. I'm sorry Mr. Shanahan, I'll wait for the special plays he makes during the game before I start using that word. Holy fuck, it just becomes impossible for people to not overrate these QBs as time goes along.
Manish is just trying to get people to "like" him again, so he writes an article to fit the narrative Cousins Kids slurp up. Mehta should of asked Mike why his son Kyle and Lynch opted to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo, instead of just signing Cousins as a free agent this off-season. Would have had the 2nd overall pick too if they don't trade a 2nd rd pick for Jimmy G who helped them finish the season on a 5 game win streak.
I'm getting a terrible feeling the Jets are gonna sign Cousins. I'm bracing myself for the worst. I'm looking at the potential market for this guy I don't see this great bidding war developing for this guy. The usual doormats Oakland & Detroit have already badly overpaid middle of the pack at best QBs. Cleveland owns two picks in the top five. I keep reading that Denver will sign him but I can't envision Elway blowing up that defense to pay this guy $30 million per year. The Jets oh my Jets fit the description perfectly of the type of team that can afford to make such a signing a desperate, devoid of top talent/expensive contracts team. Maaaybe Jacksonville but aside from QB they seem to have a strong team in place would they pay this guy $30 million per year risk having to blow up that team in the near future?
This is my biggest fear with any QB we draft. If the Jets draft for system specific QB and this regime is out, we are going to be left with a potentially inept QB. QBs who can learn, execute and thrive in any offensive scheme are rare
He did say that you need good players around any QB, including Cousins, not great players but they have to be good. You think Brady is Brady with Anthony Becht and Chaz Schillens as his primary receiver and TE?
You neglected to preface your link with a Mehta Alert Tag. The Cousins Saga is unusual because we're talking about a guy who is certainly a Top 10 NFL QB who is in his prime. But the two questions are: 1. Is he worth $30 million/year or more? 2. How long will his prime last? And for the Jets specifically: If they sign him, do they abandon the rebuild and go all in and wind up doing what they've always done? I think the signs are strong that Macc is targeting him, but I hope he misses.
they aren't weighing options they franchised him twice and offered him a 100 million dollar contract. had he signed the deal this wouldn't be a discussion. you don't offer 100 million to a player you don't love. the issue is stafford got offered like 10 mil more total and they shorted cousins on the bonus/guarentee so he declined the offer. That's NFL life
I mean it was 2 years ago, I am sure he learned from that experience? Stupid decision, but they did win the division that year <_<
yeah we all know mehta is a hack. but he is on point this time. QBs don't drop off until the mid 30s he has easily 5 years left. some people like brady and favre can playe well into their early 40s. Even McCown just had his best season at 38. landing him doens't mean we cna't grab a QB this year or in a year or 2. Gb drafted rodgers 24th when they had favre, the chiefs drafted mahomes at 10 when they had smith. The texans didn't have a QB but landed watson at 17. there really isn't a downside to signing cousins for us. it doens't change anything except give us a huge boost at a position we need it at. we need to spend anyway if we don't sign him we'll just overpay for a less important position anyway
Well I really go back on forth on this. I tend to lean towards the belief that it won't be a terrible idea, and has the potential to be franchise changing. In that vein, I could see them drafting a guy like Rudolph with their 2nd or 3rd pick and letting him learn behind Cousins. If he learns quickly they could look to trade Cousins or Rudolph later. That would be an ideal outcome. But I don't see Macc doing something like this. If he gets Cousins, I don't think he takes another QB this year. Maybe that's not a bad thing, but he also might miss out on a real find, like GB did with Rogers. There is also the possibility that after you sign him and eat up all that cap, he gets hurt, then what? Would they get relief from the Cap Police? On balance I can't argue with your logic. I'll just plead the old Billy Martin Miller Lite line: "I feel very strongly both ways".
IDK it's worked well for the pats. cassell, brisset, garapollo they drafted to take over for brady but he hans't slowed down and they traded them away for good returns. i remember one GM saying you draft a QB every year. it's a great concept.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2018/01/kirk_cousins_jets_free_agency.html jets are absolutely a dark horse candidate. If Mac had a 5 step plan right there when he came to visit, I think Cousins would sign.
But, he didn't sign the deal. If they were totally sold on him, they would have never let him get to free agency.
