As of now there is nothing other than uncredited rumor to indicate the Jets have made, or intend to make, an offer.
Because he has him as the #4 QB in the draft with Rosen going 1 to the Browns, Darnold 2 to the Giants and Mayfield to Denver at 5.
His contract expires after the Superbowl. The Eagles can't block him from interviewing after that. Maybe Bowles was afraid to wait? Or he really wanted to promote Bates?
I want Bates to succeed here just so we can read Monday morning headlines in the news about MASTER BATES
Besides the fact Mac has shown an affinity to big strong armed QBs, I can see Allen being preferred by Bates as well. If Bates is a true Mike Shanahan disciple as the reports say, that means run heavy WCO offense with play action, bootlegs and roll-outs. Allen can step in and do that stuff right away. Bates also rules out Barkley because Shanahan never believed in investing a lot on RBs. His scheme zone blocking scheme routinely turned late round picks into 1,000 yard rushers.
Ok we just fired the OL and OC coaches. Not sure why anyone with a brain would want to be the new OC for the Jets. This may explain Bates reluctance. Why would anyone want to be any coach right now for the Jets? Morton after 1 year gone? Being a Jet coach under Bowles is a dangerous career move these days. Ok I will stop being negative and try to spin something positive here. Not being able to see every Jet game and here the radio talk shows from NY, I will assume the Jets brain trust knows what they are doing. Your going to draft a franchise QB in the draft and you are going to need a patient OC, Bates to the rescue. He was the QB coach after all. Maybe he is the next Josh McDaniels. That being said I do hope we can all agree on something here. You need more than a running game these days to be successful. In todays pass happy league you definitely need a passing attack, something the Jets have not had in a long time. So the pass actually setups the run so I hope not to hear anymore we are going to win by running the ball crap. To me this is code for we don't have a passing attack. That being said I do also have one more complaint to the Jets brain trust. Get your players to shut up. In most teams Forte would not have gotten away criticizing the OC in the media. Call me old fashion, but discipline still matters and under Bowles it appears he can't get his players to stop trashing each other or the team. Maybe Morton was no genius, but did he ever have a chance? Do you really think someone like Haley would want to step into this you know what? Lets pray the Jets do find a franchise QB and Bates is a genius. Otherwise I may need to learn more about psychiatry to console you all!
But WCO as has a lot of timing routes and fitting the ball into tight spaces which Allen does not excel at. I'm bias but I just don't think Allen is going to amount to anything. If he does, it'll be because he got to sit on the bench behind veteran QB for 3 seasons and was able to hammer away at his footwork/mechanics. I don't think we'll be getting Barkley just a dream at this point. Macc needs to change his approach because his evaluations thus far have proven to be faulty.
All those backs, except Fournette, had above average QBs. It makes their job a LOT easier. Likewise, a great RB makes the QB's job a lot easier. Guess what? The Jets have neither. How about they try to upgrade BOTH positions this year instead of taking "D"?
IDK if you can say that about zeke. dak was a 4th round rookie. he's good but i feel like the o-line and zeke played a big part in dak's sucess more then dak playing a part in zeke's success. same goes for smith. he's good but the run game helped him a ton.
Actually you're making my point. A great RB can make a HUGE difference for a QB, especially a mediocre to above average one; whereas a FQB-level QB can make a mediocre RB look great. This is why I pounded the table last year for the Jets to take Fournette or Cook once it seemed like they weren't looking for a QB. And this year, if they again pass on taking their best shot at getting a FQB either in FA or the draft they should grab Barkley if at all possible. Yes, there are a lot of other RBs in the draft that are very good, but none of them are in Barkley's class. By himself he can transform an offense to above average, if not great. Couple him with a decent QB and now you definitely have an above average, if not great offense.
