Well I've seen/heard discussion about possibly cutting Powell (cap hit of 4 mil) for a younger McKinnon who's only 25. I need 3 RB's and I'm good. Have to allocate the rest to O-line cause we are sorely lacking legitimate o-line players.

Any talk of cutting Powell in favor of McKinnon is nuts imo. Powell has been a great Jet and a very effective, efficient player. What's McKinnon done in the NFL? Powell scored almost as many TDs (5) this past season as McKinnon has in his entire NFL career (7).

The phrase "who is regarded as the best offensive mind in the building" is called an appositive, it modifies "Bates," it does not modify "the feeling at One Jets Drive." Understanding this convention of written English indicates that, according to Mehta, someone somewhere has claimed Bates is the best offensive mind, it does not indicate that person is himself at One Jets Drive. Hence, it could be a guy at a bar, a guy at the NFL office or even a family member of Bates; it could also mean dozens of people throughout the NFL but without further detail it means virtually nothing.

As pointed out, even if many NFL insiders agree with the statement, we need to look at how that relates to NFL offense coaches in general; we may very well be setting the bar extremely low.

Being the brightest offensive mind in the Jets building is like being the skinniest chick at fat camp.

What/Why are you responding with your opening sentence? I didn't say that I think Bates should be our new OC, or that others in the NFL agree with the statement. I didn't say that the phrase "who is regarded as the best offensive mind in the building" modifies "One Jets Drive."

I was clearly taking issue with your comment stating that "the feeling at one Jets Drive" is that Bates is the smartest offensive mind in the building, didn't mean it was the Jets' leadership and could be someone in a bar, people from the Browns or Patriots, and that grkmanga added that sentiment. He didn't. It's right there in black and white in "the feeling at one Jets Drive." That clearly implies Jets leadership. There are no bars as far as I know at One Jets Drive, nor do people in the Browns or Patriots organization work at One Jets Drive. That is the issue, not "who is regarded as the best offensive mind in the building" refers to. May I be so bold as to suggest that you read posts a little more slowly and carefully?

For what it's worth, I agree with your overall opinion that it doesn't mean that they're correct. As I think I stated in an earlier post, the "smartest offensive mind" in the building doesn't mean or say much, since the Jets CS in general is sub-par.

So, is Jeremy Bates the new OC?

Thread title is confusing me when compared to thread contents. :)

May I be so bold as to suggest you do the same.

The beauty of an appositive is that the sentence can stand on its own without being changed in meaning if that word or phrase is removed as the appositive phrase simply modifies or describes the word before it. In doing so the sentence would read "The feeling on One Jets Drive is that Bates would welcome play-calling duties." I did not comment on that statement as I have seen conflicting opinions on whether he actually wants the job and have no insight into his actual desires. The part about Bates "being regarded as the best offensive mind in the building" can also stand alone. Perhaps viewing it as such will help you and others understand what it was that Mehta was actually stating. Say what you will about Mehta but he has no problem using proper written English. There is nothing specific or implicit in what he wrote that attributed the "regarded as the best offensive mind" phrase to anyone within the organization but that has not stopped you, and others, from drawing that false inference. Here is a page, using examples, that may make my explanation easier to understand:

    http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/appositive.htm

My two points in commenting here were 1) To ask precisely who regards Bates as the best offensive mind and what qualifies their opinion to be held in any amount of high esteem 2) To suggest that within the Jets organization the bar might be set exceptionally low in attempting to identify the best offensive mind.

I do agree that while McKinnon is the younger and more dynamic player, Powell has been more consistent. I think Powell still is a solid rotational back, while McKinnon has all the tools to be a top back, there's something that's missing. I wouldn't mind bringing him in to be apart of a 3 headed attack but not as the main guy.

Quit deflecting. You're wrong and you know it. You either misread the sentence or totally ignored that part about One Jets Drive, or are just intentionally being obtuse and want someone with whom to argue. That's the crux of the matter.

The fact is that the appositive phrase "being regarded as the best offensive mind in the building" doesn't refer to One Jets Drive. It refers to Bates. I know what appositives and appositive phrases are, and your explanation is BS. Just be man enough to admit that you were wrong for once.

With regards to your bolded phrase above, you're wrong. The phrase "the feeling at One Jets Drive" clearly answers your first point above. There is no question as to whom was "feeling" or "thinking" that Bates is the brightest offensive mind in the building. It clearly refers to the Jets' braintrust, leadership. It doesn't say one of them feel/think that way. The way it reads is that they are in agreement. It indicates consensus. If you can't understand that, then you need to go back to school and learn how to comprehend what you read.

For all your knowledge of grammar, it's a pity that you can't see the forest for the trees and have reading comprehension issues.

Totally agree. Powell has been far from "a great back". He's been a serviceable backup who has been good some games and has disappeared in others. Throw in a propensity to getting dinged up pretty easily and I'd go for a McKinnon in a heartbeat

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink if he'd rather be a stubborn ass. The bolded is completely true, as I've been saying all along but there is nothing in the Mehta statement that indicates the person doing the regarding is in Florham Park as I showed above by removing the appositive. Feel free to believe otherwise; feel free to be wrong. Then for you to infer there is some kind of consensus about anything in the Jets organization is ridiculous and indicative of how easy it is for you to read what you want into a statement.

He’s at that 30 wall coming up, which means he’s best days are behind him. At some point, we gotta be looking for an upgrade.

yeah but mckinnon ins't that upgrade. I really like maguire as well. and there is the draft. I really down see a reason to drop powell currently. I expect him and maguire to share the load for 2018 and that's the final year of his deal. and after 2018 we can look at RB. we have enough things to worry about more important and on top of that history has shown you can find good RBs easy in the draft and they can contribute right away. it's not really a position with a learning curve. I mean hunt just led the NFL in rushing as a 3rd round rookie, cook a 2nd round rookie could have won it if not for the injury, fournette looked great, kamara had 1500 total yards as a 3rd round rookie. We can grab a RB this draft if we wanted or wait until next year. plenty of them to go around currently
