Paying through the nose to get the overrated soon to be 30 year old Cousins is more comparable to getting the overrated at the time 30 year old Neil O'Donnell. Both could/will not elevate a team to a championship level. Cousins doesn't pass the eye test. He is loved by box score gm's though.
That's the point though, I'm not asking for anyone to agree with me, as I am simply stating my case for wanting Cousins over gambling in the draft. We'll see what happens soon
See, your opening bolded statement is at the crux of why I disagree. That's going backwards to the "competitive rebuild" nonsense that has already failed. Why in the world would we want to go back to that? We're rebuilding. Why care if we're competitive in 2018? As long as we're missing a lot of pieces, it would really be better for the team to not be competitive. Look at how drafting #6 instead of #2 or #3 will hurt us in the draft this year. If we're still missing an edge rusher or elite LT prospect or #1 WR, we 'd be better served drafting as early as possible in the 2019 draft so that we can complete the rebuild. By then the young QB would have developed, gained experience, and we'd be ready to compete realistically instead of wishing and hoping with a half-ass rebuild. No thanks.
You must not watch the games he's played in. Show me all the Redskins fans clamoring for their team to keep Kirky Cousins. Kirk Cousins reminds me of Marc Bulger. A guy only as good as the pieces around him, but chokes in the playoffs.
Competitive rebuilds don't happen when a Qb who usually has 30 td's and 15 or less interceptions is available. Elite no, but real good that you can win with? Absolutely. It's a rare occurrence but I liken this to a similar situation that transpired with Drew Brees when the Chargers opted to get Rivers and Brees ended up in NO. The point of addressing QB is that we also have 100 mil in cap space a high 1st round and 2 2nd round picks. In one offseason, you can go from a team that has a ton of holes to one that competes very quickly. Parity in the NFL is real and it happens every season where teams who are garbage become better and compete and make the playoffs (the Jaguars say hello). That first round pick at 6, or even more if we have to trade up, could screw the jets royally for years to come if things to break right. There's two sides of a coin, my side is one, your side is another. You can build both ways. One is traditional, another is unconventional. But given the jets history, I'm opting for the unconventional given the people running the team and the fact that jets are irrelevant and haven't made the playoffs in almost a decade.
But you didn't answer the question, who would you rather we go with that would be better than Kirk and allow us to be more competitive? Kirk is not elite, but again he's good enough to win a bunch with.
Thanks for making my point for me. If they sign Cousins, that means the rebuild is over, and they go all in on winning. They won't have finished the job the right way. You and I both know that they still have too many holes to fix in one, and maybe even two offseasons, even with all the cap space they'll have this year and next. There have to be the quality players available at the Jets' positions of need. For instance, there is no quality FA LT available other than Solder. If they can't sign him (which they probably couldn't). Beachum's still under contract, but his play could tail off or he could get injured. Who would play LT? Even if Beachum played well this year, the Jets could cut him next offseason and save $8 million on the cap, so this is probably his last year with us unless he plays lights out. What if there are not decent FA LTs available next offseason? If Cousins plays as well as you think he will here, the Jets won't have a chance of drafting an elite LT prospect barring an expensive trade up. Missing on the pick at #6 would truly hurt, but wouldn't screw them capwise, and the new GM could easily draft another QB in 2019 or 2020. He would owe nothing to the stiffs that Mac picked. As I said, I understand your rationale for wanting Cousins. If the Jets sign him, I sure hope you're right. I just think it would wind up being a disaster all the way around and would doom the team to another 5+ years of mediocrity. I've enjoyed the discussion.
I would see what it would take to get Alex Smith from the Chiefs. Then if that doesn't work out maybe consider getting Nick Foles. Maybe make a run at Bridgewater. All of the above would not preclude me from wanting the Jets to be aggressive in the draft and get a quarterback of the future. I would be aggessive in both free agency after getting the win now vet qb, then I would be even more aggressive in the upcoming draft. I would trade back in rd one and stock up on picks. Goal would be to have 4 picks on day one. Nail every fucking one. Make a roster so good, that Gump would win coach of the year.
Did you see Alex Smith play against the Giants in Metlife with the wind? He was throwing ducks left and right. Foles has shown flashes but I fear that he will get signed to a big deal and then stink up the place. Bridgewaters leg may never be the same again. I get the idea of it all and I see where the value in it is, but from a pure who's the best option at QB in FA its Cousins. We'll see how things shake up. Unfortunately, free agency doesn't start till March 14, with the legal tampering period starting on March 12.
Your argument has merit, but you're overlooking the fact that with Macc - and more importantly Woody/Chris - in charge, the likelihood is that tey won't have the patience to do what you want. Take this year: we were in prime position to "tank competitively" by letting Petty/Hack play and "win" a top pick - 1 or 2. But that's not what happened. Was that just Bowles on his own doing that, or did he have the tacit support of Macc and the Johnsons? I suspect the latter based again on history. As long
Using highlights versus the Jets, is liking using highlights of an NFL team playing a JV team. Bowles failed to adjust in that game and let Tyreek Hill abuse them. A Bowles special of no adjustments and piss poor defense.
That video doesn't fit your Smith throws ducks at MetLife narrative. Perhaps you would like to watch videos of Cousins at MetLife vs the Giants? https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CousKi00/gamelog/?opp_id=nyg Take a look at his games vs the Giants at MetLife...he was even horrible against that swiss cheese Giants secondary in 2015. He got his ass whooped by the 2015 Jets at MetLife as well. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CousKi00/gamelog/?opp_id=nyj Kirk Cousins is a career 1-4 at MetLife Stadium and thrown 4 tds to 9 ints. A real gamer in New York.
The game was on a day at metlife when the wind wasn't howling throughout the stadium. Versus the Jets, the conditions were not like that. That was the point of the original post that I don't think Alex Smith can play in NY conditions consistently. Also, Alex Smith is under contract so unless you're willing to cough up some draft capital for him, he will not be a Jet. Also, I think its interesting that the Chiefs drafted Mahomes, when Alex Smith was tearing things up in KC. Pretty obvious that KC does not think Smith is the long term answer there, and often times I have seen Chiefs fans call him a game manager. He's good but it means he will now be replaced for the second time (got benched for Kaepernick in SF and will now be replaced by Mahomes in KC). Also, Kirk Cousins TD/INT ratio versus the Giants is not weather related and to be quite honest, I cannot comment on his appearances versus the Giants given I haven't watched all his games. That's not me trying to take an easy way out either, I just seriously have not watched him play versus the Giants so I cannot say one way or another why his stats are off. I will say though that Cousins plays in the DC area, which is windy/cold so weather should not be a factor.
while they are greater history has still shown the odds of a QB in the 1st round being a FQB is less then 50% and due to the importance of the position essentially you have a greater then 50% chance of setting your franchise back 5-6 years. Also half the QBs starting in the NFL were drafted after the 1st round or UDFA. While later round QBs have a lower sucess rate, it's still been proven you can find one with much less risk. I'm all for the jets taking a QB at 6 or trading up for one i'm just showing all sides of the board
you can cherry pick bad games for any QB except maybe brady. hell Big Ben threw 5 INTs vs Jax earlier in the year and played like shit that game. he then came back and threw 4TDs 1 INT and almost 400 yards against them in the playoffs
So wait, you're saying you've watched all of Kirk's games? If so, maybe you're a redskins fan or live in the DC area, frankly I do not nor am I a redskins fan. I'm not sure what your're trying to get at. My initial point was that Alex Smith looked horrible versus the Giants when the wind was howling. Could I have expanded my point to include that he is now about to get canned for a second time to further my point? Or should I highlight his early career stats with the 49ers to further my point. Or the fact that this season, at 33 years old, was the second time in his career that he threw for more than 20 touchdowns. He's not a bad option, he's certainly not my first option though.
It's clear to me now you are just making excuses for Cousins. Without a doubt you're a Cousins apologist who already has his mind made up. On the other side you're saying Alex 104.7 Smith throws ducks and would struggle outdoors at MetLife. Based on all the football games I've seen and stats I've consumed I could not didsgree with you more. I would take Smith over the overrated Cousins every day of the week, and twice on Sundays. We will just have to agree to disagree on the matter.
